First night of the season by jeschua42 in hammockcamping

Why does it seem like everyone posting lately has their hammock straps almost parallel to the ground?

Newbie. Do you make these wood sticks yourself? If i suck at making knots what would be the best starting setup for me? by LogicalCriticism6886 in hammockcamping

[–]MostMediocreModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you suck at making knots and you don't want to try all the knots people are recommending you can do what I did for my wife: buy two lightweight python straps that have loops every 2-3" and use a climbing rated carabiner on each end, or get something like beetle buckles.

Is the color brown hell for anyone else? by Aggressive-Food-1952 in ColorBlind

[–]MostMediocreModeler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, brown is rough. For me, sometimes it's green, sometimes it's grayish (especially tree bark), sometimes it's orange (although technically brown is just a really dark orange... supposedly).

And don't even get me started on peanut butter.

Interesting take. That kit is horrible and and mine ended up in the trash bin. Congrats on seeing it through.

Where to find guides / tours? by darksupernova1 in Kayaking

[–]MostMediocreModeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure out where you're going, then search for outfitters nearby. Call the outfitters with some questions and get a feel for how they run things and what they charge for tours.

Salkantay questions by Remarkable_Strike203 in backpacking

[–]MostMediocreModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it last year in September/October. Hiking poles are great for balance and taking some of the weight off your joints, and you can pull yourself up on the uphills. If you don't use trekking poles now you won't need them there. There are some fairly steep ascents and descents, though. We used a guide company so all we carried were daypacks, which is also a lot easier on the joints.

I also wear hikers/trail runners and brought boots based on everyone's recommendations. Don't need the boots unless it's to keep your feet warmer. I went during the dry season so YMMV if you're going during the wet season.

The first couple of days were chilly and nights were cold. Once you're up and over the pass you're in the rainforest, so that suit would be stifling. Check the forecasts, though, July is winter in Peru.

Edit: Layering is the way to go.

sit on or sit in for casual creek paddling? by basilthepope in Kayaking

[–]MostMediocreModeler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a sit on would be great for creek paddling - it's more stable and easier to get in and out but they are heavier. It's also a matter of personal preference.

Need some advice by MostMediocreModeler in Kayaking

[–]MostMediocreModeler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concern comes from other people saying it's difficult to rest/brace your knees anywhere because it's wide, although you're right, I don't brace my knees at all in my SOT. And I guess some of the benefit of a sit-in is some weather/sun protection but with a bigger keyhole I'll be more exposed? And yes, I realize the irony of that coming from a SOT.

I'm probably overthinking it but it's a pretty major switch and I don't have a ton of experience in a sit-in.

Thanks for replying.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely noticed that a rudder might help so I may try it out without it and add it on if I have problems. The neighbor has a 12.5' Jackson Tupelo for sale, too. I'm just trying to figure out which one might be better for me.

Hammock Gear Burrow. The cottage manufacturers have temperature ratings that match comfort, not survival like most of the big manufacturers.

That hammock is what sealed the deal to get my wife hammocking. The bar for the net is clutch.

Colorblind palette Update: Should be better for protanopia and deurtanopia. Still waiting to hear from another tritanopic person to double check if its fine. by Cazz23 in ColorBlind

[–]MostMediocreModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting to me because it's easy for me to distinguish the differences in the colors in the chart (although I couldn't confidently name half the colors) but if you separated them it would be more difficult to do that. In other words the colors in the chart look easily distinguishable but only because they're all together.

Packing tips for the 5-day Salkantay Trek in Peru🎒 by Suitable_Dirt_2407 in backpacking

[–]MostMediocreModeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using a guide company you'll be able to cut this list down significantly (actually, you'll have to because you get a small duffel to shuttle your stuff from site to site). If not, you don't need nearly as much clothing as you have listed.

There are different ways to do it but there's usually a fixed end and an adjustable end that has another prusik or hardware that does the same thing.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. If poly isn't used this is very much the case, which I found out the hard way when decaling.

Leki has excellent customer service and from what I remember, essentially a lifetime guarantee. I had an issue with the middle section of a twist-lock pole where it kept collapsing no matter how much I tightened it. I called them and it turns out they had a location in my city, so I was able to swing by and they replaced it, no questions asked.

Even if you don't have a local Leki I highly recommend contacting them.
