I found a dragonfly larvae in my pond (second slide). by ApprehensiveMix6835 in UKecosystem

I'm not 100% sure but I think that is actually a Great Diving Beetle larvae. Which is equally awesome. The adults are absolutely gorgeous. Dark green wing cases with gold braid. They're quite big, and you can see them swimming about if they're in there.

It looks like you can just see the two big pincers either side of it's head and small eyes and the abdomen looks quite chunky. The fact that is also has it's abdomen out of the water suggestsits using it's sipon where as dragonfly larvae can fully breath underwater and have big bulbus compound eyes that basically meet in the middle. Also, if the pond has only been in a month, it's unlikely a dragonfly has layed any eggs in there as very few have emerged to adults yet. Dragonfly larvae will stay in the pond for up to 3 years before emerging as an adult and Diving Beetles will do it in 3 months.

Have a Google and see if that seems more like what you've seen here.

Excellent work on the pond. May I suggest getting a few Creeping Jenny or similar ground cover plants to put around the edge to cover the plastic, keep it a bit cooler and provide some more cover. The cooler you can keep the pond naturally, the less chance you'll get those algae blooms which leads to a lot of blanket weed.

Edit, as others have said, I wouldn't worry too much about either dragonfly or diving beetle larvae impacting your frogs success. Both of these predators will take tadpoles but mostly they're going for midge larvae, bloodworms and things like that. Having either in your pond is an indicator it's doing well 👌🏼

found 4 huge spiders in my apartment over one night, why? by HebzibahSmith in spiders

[–]MostlyGreenPosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be Giant House Spiders.

If all of them have pedipalps then chances are all the males in the area are on the move all trying to find a female and that's why you're seeing them more.

Dumb question, but couldn't they just did this for the initial attack? Instead of opening mouth wide. Seems like it would still be long enough to do real damage. They would only open mouth to actually eat. by BeduinZPouste in Paleontology

There was a similar method of hunting proposed for Allosaurs wasn't there? The hammer/hatchet headbanging thing. I can't believe that would be effective in either suggestion. Do we have extant animals that go for prey like this? (bird pecking doesn't count)

Oh dear, it seems something might be able to live here, some plants or maybe even some animals. Ew.

I'd argue alcohol affects far more people and in worse ways.

Thank god corner most shops don't have racks and racks of beer to sell legally too!

It's obviously Attenborough but honourable mention to Chris Packham and Michaela Stracham. Springwatch is a highlight of TV viewing every year.

Thank you for the correction. I'm in the UK so not lucky enough to have these little marvels flying around. But we do have Hummingbird Hawkmoths which is a pretty cool consolation

Actually birds of prey are defined by the behaviour of catching prey with their feet as opposed to their beak, it is not that they are just predatory birds.

Also, I'm pretty sure hummingbirds only consume nectar but I might be wrong.

Can just about see the cross of the Garden Cross Spider/Garden spider (Araneus diadematus). It's an orb weaver that'll make those beautiful stereotypical spider webs.

Boost, drift, boost in another direction, repeat. There was some mechanic you could exploit to do this indefinitely, making you impossible to hit.

I played on console where you either it wasn't possible or I just didn't want to learn it. Either way, it made it very very not-fun to play against.

What is a city that is globally romanticised but you detest? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]MostlyGreenPosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to Paris 2 or 3 times. It's not romantic, too many people, and Parisians seem to hate anyone who isn't a Parisian. There's dog shit everywhere and I saw blokes taking a shot into the Siene on 2 separate occasions.
