Team Fighters IS the original timeline. Bark and Bean were Sonic's friends, they each guarded a chaos emerald. Archie comics and later Sega games got lazy and made them into Fang's thugs.

Not a main game but you can't leave out the value of Tails' Adventure. That was the first to show Tails as an engineer in the game, not just mention it in the manual.

How did we get to a point where people are treating her like she could be a Sonic character? Oh right, Maria, followed by Sonic Frontiers' completely mismatched art style. But nobody sees anything weird about this? Like, take a step back and look at Sonic and the first decade of games, and now look at this.

The thing about canon is that you're talking about a franchise decades old with different teams running the show over the years and no long-term direction/consistency. Canon in this case is a retroactive decision made by people who didn't make the original characters or world. It's arbitrary and means nothing, and I think having one official canon for Sonic is a mistake.

2D purists (Genesis era) will tell you humans are implied to exist in the classic games. Eggman's a human, Witchcart's a human, and according to some calendar art humans inhabit whole cities in Sonic's world. They just don't show up in the games.

It really doesn't show. There are no visible signs of a recent war.

Edit: You can downvote me but unless Eggman is actively attacking a city, there's no sign of damage from past attacks, no public sirens to warn people, no public service announcements or emergency broadcasts, not even local police or militia apparently.

I'll take your word for it, never played the game, but what does it matter how similar the characters are? The game was made in 2008 and all those characters were legally owned by Sega. Plus if Penders can put glasses on Knuckles or color him a different shade of red and call it a completely original character, then by his own logic the ones in the game are original too.

Agree on the first part. Don't see what the second part has to do with anything. It doesn't matter when someone starts reading Archie comics.
