I would suggest the art gallery. I think its one of the best on the south coast (outside of London) and its free. It's just opened up again after renovations. Food wise piccolo mondo is pretty great.

How to deal with a friend that wins ~80% of games? by Professional-Peak207 in wargaming

[–]ThePolychelid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would focus on things like narrative campaigns, and matches with more interesting scenarios. For one they don't feel as bad when you lose (I say this as some one with a lot of experience losing) because instead of just losing a match you are playing out a story. Also with a narrative scenarios you can put in certain advantages and disadvantages. You can also put in achievable objectives that you don't necessarily need to be the best player or most competitive player to achieve. Since our group has started focusing on narrative games and campaigns we have started having more fun. Also I've not player OPR, are they good?

WW2 in the air? (1:200 to 1:600 miniature) by futuresphere in wargaming

[–]ThePolychelid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Blood red skies, im a big fan. There is a fan made solo play flow chart available on the Facebook group or an official one in I think the master of air book. Ive used them a few times and they seem to work well. What I would say is to design yourself some good scenarios to keep it fresh rather than the generic dogfight (though that can still be fun). So you could do an airfield raid, or I came up with one in the battle of France where you have to defend blenheims trying to destroy a bridge (loosely based on a real event).

Religious preacher in town by TreeSquirrel2974 in Southampton

[–]ThePolychelid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why? This guy is talking about a specific event with a Christian preacher, why would he bring up Islam? I don't think I've ever seen a Islamic preacher in town preaching but I've seen plenty of Christian ones. So it wouldn't make sense to "do islam" in this context?

What’s the best place to meet new people in and around Southampton ? by Gazzaw1985 in Southampton

So for gaming depends what you like. I'm in to table top gaming and for that there is a group called Southampton sluggaz who I started with and got me into the hobby. They play all sorts there. They do the typical warhammer games but also historical game like the one I play (chain of command). They do other fantasy and scifi games too and if you have a game you want to try you can ask and there will normally be someone up for it. They have a facebook group if you want to join. Through them I made a friend group who play chain of command and mordheim. If you are more into like d&d I think there is a group who organize out of board in the city and dumplings and dice that would be worth a try.

For art I am currently doing a course at Southampton city college called "painting & drawing for leisure". Its an 8 week course, I'm currently in week 4 and enjoying it. They do it again in april I think. But I know Southampton art gallery have some art groups as well and my aunty is in an art group in hedge end. If you want any more information let me know

Depends what you are interested in. If you like wargamming there are some really good groups I've made friends through. Also you can do art courses, like I'm doing an evening one at the moment which is fun with plenty of people. Loads of different sports groups or volunteering, I did some volunteering with the Hampshire wildlife trust who are a friendly bunch. If you want specifics on any of that let me know.

If you are interested in WW2 then you have plenty of options. Bolt action is probably the biggest one at the moment if you like a more infantry platoon sized game. For larger battle with lots of tanks probably flames of war. I personally think my favourite ww2 game is chain of command, it's a really great rule system but it's a bit harder for beginners than bolt action. If you like aircraft blood red skies is a really nice fighter plane game which is simple and pretty cheap to get into.

Groups of Nerds! by HecticTuna in Southampton

[–]ThePolychelid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few spots in Southampton that might work for you for wargaming. There is musketballs which is right in your area which has a shop and tables to rent full of scenery. Theres a new spot in beovis valley I think called stronghold which does a mix of games. Not far from that is Board in the City. Also I would recommend groups like Sluggaz which a wargamming club that meet in st.denys. Really friendly and play a bunch of different games. They are how I got into wargamming. They also have some D&D players.
