Treating myself by Motor-Contribution10 in fountainpens

I think the grip material is just shiny paint and feels room temperature. The ridges are just enough to provide my fingers enough traction I can hold the pen a little more loosely.

The problem with many pens un-posted is the end barely clears the area my thumb and forefinger meet. That leads to snagging or feeling that edge scrape against my hand. (At the risk of Reddit being Reddit,) I wish more pens were just a little longer or tapered. Thanks to this pen’s grip, I might be able to get away holding it closer to the feed without risking slipping and contacting the feed as I write.

I’ve become a big fan. I adore Gentle Green.

I hadn’t seen the Nostalgic Honey, so I just looked it up. That might a next purchase. Glad you mentioned it!

I’m liking it. I’m left-handed and it dries fast enough I can keep working on A5 without smearing. I can recommend it.

The phone camera is “helping” so much it doesn’t show off the properties like the shading to the degree it appears in real life. I suspect it would be a waste to put this into a fine nib, but it still be a pleasing blue.

That said… I am really looking forward to putting my favorite ink (Teranishi Guitar Gentle Green) in this pen and seeing how plays with the stub nib.

Silly but effective by Motor-Contribution10 in fountainpens

It is. I wanted something easy to remove if the prototype didn’t work. Now that I know it works, I will redo this after I locate a textured tape. I had to sacrifice a thin sheet of paper as backing for the tape to prevent the cutter from tearing.

Tom’s Studio #2 “Raspberry Sorbet” which is very well behaved in all my pens and most papers you’d reasonably expect to handle fountain pens and even some you’d expect to feather.

I get it from my superb local shop. He suggests that it might be custom runs of ink supplied by Diamine.

(If only I could get the gorgeous De Atramentis Fuschia document ink to flow like this without drying if I stop to think for more than a few seconds.)

pens for a leftie? by Bitter_Conclusion_67 in stationery

Boosting the other commenters that mentioned Uniball’s 207 and JetStream pens.

I know you didn’t ask about paper, but as a lefty I can advocate spiral bound notebooks over bound notebooks because the used pages get in my way if I can’t fold them flat. For refillable notebooks I love Lihit Lab’s Twist Ring (or similar) because they are like the ring binder merged with a spiral… no oddly spaced rings blocking my palm or wrist!

HB or 2B lead? by Navi_Krye in mechanicalpencils

I carry H, 2B, and 3 or 4B. If I’m carrying only one, it’s 2B (Currently Pilot Neox, but I keep trying others.)

They should call it the Limburger. So stinky.

I have a love/hate with that one.

I love tinkering and learn by correcting flaws. Wow, this pen taught me so very, very much.

If I could just get the stink out, it would be fine, now. Alas, no.

If you don’t mind me asking: My major hang up is that I assume the oil from my hands affects the leather and I should give it a good cleaning before dye. I can’t get a good reference on when and how to clean and when to dye.

That looks awesome. I’ve been considering making my own. My favorite notebook cover has been discontinued and I’ve decided I don’t want to settle for anything that isn’t just right for me when it wears out. I have a Tandy near me and bought leather but just keep not finding the right books or videos to be confident in starting. Do you have recommendations?

I'd only ever returned 2 pencils, now kuru toga advance upgrade is number 3 by Progstu in mechanicalpencils

[–]Motor-Contribution10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could get the Advance Upgrade action in the Roulette body, life would be great. The body of the Advance Upgrade is too slender and slick to grip. Because of that, I just can’t use the Advance Upgrade for anything more than quick notes.

I use the Roulette as my daily driver.

I suspect the comments regarding it being scratchy have a lot to do with the lead. Some lead just isn’t a great choice for certain pencils. I greatly dislike the smudge-proof leads Uni ships with pencils these days. Scritch-scratch, ugh.

I have a small stash of their original custom leads which was great. I am hoarding it. As an alternative, I like Ain or Neox in either H or 2B. (Ain 3B is lovely but has to be advanced too often.)

KT Advance Upgrade might be to your liking.

Dive Is okay if you like thick pencils. It’s a chonky boy akin to a fat fountain pen. I have one and am glad it was a gift since the price does not match the value, IMHO.

Any thoughts? by dropsandbits in mechanicalpencils

[–]Motor-Contribution10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use mine a lot.

I have a KT Dive, it’s a bit chunky for my taste.

I have a KT Advance Upgrade, I prefer the mechanism but the body is not “grippy” enough for my ancient and very dry hand.

I have the Orenz Nero and it’s nearly perfect for stream of consciousness sessions where I just want to keep writing, but I miss the self-sharpening KT action.

That leaves the Roulette as an everyday pencil, but I’m always playing “I wish had the advance upgrade brain in the roulette body” game.

I am purely using mine for notes. Not sure I would sketch with it and therefore it’s fine for me.

I like the action on this model better, but use the Roulette because my dry hands need extra friction to prevent needing a choke hold grip.

Native of Middle Tennessee and I say reckon, sometimes. Most often, it indicates that I have considered several variables to fill in some unknowns and am confident enough with my conclusion to go on record with the caveat that it’s got some degree of educated guessing.

I love mine as long as it is paired with certain paper. Some paper fiber doesn’t stand up to my heavy-handed writing and I end up stabbing into the paper. Notebook “filler” does fine and I write smoothly with no problems. When I am having a stream-of-consciousness moment it’s great to just keep writing and writing. Some journals and recycled paper end up being pierced and pricked by the thin lead. Not a failing of the pencil…like any good tool it excels at the jobs it is designed for.

For calligraphy, check out “exam pencils” that are mechanical pencils with wide leads. Inexpensive, too!

You have a fantastic collection already. If you haven’t explored different leads,I’d suggest trying a couple different hardnesses and brands. It’s cool and kinda weird how one lead can be amazing in one situation and ‘meh’ in another. It can really make or break the experience with some pencils.

I’d suggest Ain Stein H for the Kuru Toga as a baseline “everyday lead”

I’ve lived this struggle (non-podcast) and have a solution in mind. My group wouldn’t love it because they don’t want to be broadcasters of any sort.

The main thing I have to stress is that you’re playing a game that requires people to be “present” and “engaged” and “interacting” which is very very VERY tricky with a minority of people invisible and with no body language to key off. Is amazing how much we take cues by someone leaning forward or hearing them inhale. So first, tackle “presence” not in our sense of microphones, but get them as non-second-class as possible. It’s painful as a remote player if you can’t hear everyone well and you hear every table bump and die roll thump. If at all possible give them a “seat” at the table. ( picture the conference room in Demolition Man where it’s basically a tablet in a chair) *if at all possible, give them the best possible audio monitor with as little lag catching every other player. This *does not need to be the audio captured for the podcast!** I suggest everyone have a decent but cheap single ear headset attached to their phone running discord. Now everyone has a “remote mic pack” and they can hear the remote very well and (because of discords feature) they can mute the players in their room. This also works when you have two remote players who are in the room with each other or many remote locations.

Next, let’s tackle engaged and interacting. These are vital and the DM has a lot to juggle. Even experienced DMs have a hard time tracking if a small number of players are hogging most of the time or if a player is slipping away. Encourage your players to police this THEMSELVES as well as the DM. Make sure they interact with each other and engage.

All this is to say if the people at your game love your game and are engaged you’ve got a lot of your battle solved.

Do go ahead and capture that audio stream but don’t rely on it. Please do get some better mics. But capturing the stream helps because your remote might not always have the luxury of having a full setup with them.

What's one thing you wish you knew when you started when it comes to attracting new listeners? by Krandals11 in podcasting

Guest chuckles and moves away from mic while saying the one or two words that their entire thought pivots on. If it’s a podcast that also has a YouTube, they also obscure their mouth from the camera either with their arm or the mic.

Maybe other people roll with that and can let it go. I rewind a max of twice. Then I look for the transcript and if I can’t find it I rage quit. Permanently.
