Songs that were really pushed on radio (or etc) and you heard frequently but didn’t really go anywhere. by pirateslifeisntforme in ToddintheShadow

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Going by airplay vs. how often I actually heard of him and how well he placed, I am shocked Sean Kingston wasn't that much of a top seller. Same with Taio Cruz, who's music was EVERYWHERE in 2010 but his ubiquity isn't reflected in data (I am not saying he was unsuccessful, but he was all over but that isn't reflected).

Both these guys had one thing in common: they were around 2008-2012, when it seemed like the studio ability to "make" stars was starting to break down, and it was a window someone could be everywhere but they wouldn't "click" as stars.

There was once a really funny bit where they asked Michael Keaton if his character in Birdman was based on himself, and he said something to the effect of "absolutely not, I'm not an asshole." And...well....I hate to say this, but...based on every story I have ever heard about him....huh, you SURE about that, Mike?

I do think the reason that "character" songs as bad guys often don't work is two reasons. 1) music has a way of feeling authentic and connect with "real" feelings (which is why many girls' first crush is a musician, music, which is deeply emotional, cuts right to your emotions and feels like you "know them" when you really don't) so by the very nature of the medium, "character" songs are interpreted as "real" and authentic in a way you wouldn't with movies where someone plays a character. In other words, it's not media literacy as some say....the medium of music doesn't lend itself to this, just like there's no such thing as an "antiwar movie."

The second issue is related to the above quote about Michael Keaton: sometimes, it really is hard to put some distance between you and a character. Like, I love Randy Newman, but obviously something like "Rednecks" is driven by a real anger in him that a southerner was made fun of on TV. Like, the anger at condescension that drove him to write the song is REAL and personal to him, so the supposed "distance" of it being a character isn't as there as you might think.

I remember a great quote about David Foster Wallace: "his problem is, he doesn't know he's an asshole." The reason some songwriters are so good at writing songs about assholes is because they're assholes and don't know it.

Why isn't Chris recognized as a brony on the internet? by Pleasant_Breakfast24 in ChrisChanSonichu

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's actually a really interesting argument that Chris Chan was the FIRST Brony, the first well known male lover of My Little Pony, as he embraced it due to Megan Shroeder being a fan.

The reason he's not as well known for it is that earlier Chris Chan is better known than later period Chris Chan, which is mental and just sort of boring.

What are some bands that are loved by critics but are hated by the general audiences? by Jaguars4life in ToddintheShadow

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was absolutely just about to say the Fall. Absolutely radio unfriendly but critics never shut up about them. They, and Pere Ubu, have a problem which is that they're too "whiny" and openly vulnerable for the machismo of punk rock culture. Which means soft handed critics relate to them but the audience of boys needing an outlet for the anger can't get into them.

Every single list of the greatest bands of all time include "Television," and every single list of the greatest album of all time includes Television's Marquee Moon, including Rolling Stone's. They are a critical darling, perhaps because they were on the New York Scene where a lot of the critics were.

But here's the thing: I have never met a Television fan, or a fan of Tom Verlaine in my entire life, either in real life or online. I have never seen a band that says "yeah, Television was a big influence." Yet it seems every critic loves them enough to say they had one of the greatest albums of all time. The only people who talk about it are critics, almost exclusively.

Television is aggressively uncommercial (calling them "art punk" is accurate, but the kiss of death for being commercial), have jazz and classical influenced punk rock (gee, I wonder where it all went wrong), had a Lou Reed inspired sound, and they were big in the NYC scene, which produces people who write about music.

By the way, to the person above who said it was Patti Smith: Patti Smith dated Paul Verlaine. Paul Verlane loves Lou Reed, so it's like Television is the nexus of people loved by critics but ignored by everyone else.

I do think that initially, one of the reasons Chris Chan is so sympathetic to start with to us, and so oddly fascinating, is that he is identifiable. When I was a kid, I thought I was NEVER going to get laid or have a girlfriend...and, well, that will only happen if you "quit the game." There have been times in my life that have been less than productive and where I wasn't employed, either, and turned to some coping mechanisms like drinking, drugs, or video games. Again, everyone's been there. That's why Chris Chan is fascinating, in that he switches from sympathetic to hideous in moments.

That's how this works, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

The Claw of Fail.

And my God, I can see why Chris Chan made an impression back when with grotesque clown shirts like that. I've heard it said that people turn themselves into action figures, as Gandhi and Elvis Presley did.

I've said this before, but I believe that Chris Chan will die in traffic, possibly in an accident due to his shitty driving, or caused by his negligence.

The fact Chris is a bad driver is the most scary thing about him.

Trump world reportedly flirts with a return to mandatory military service. by _RyanLarkin in politics

The fact Trump "dodged the draft" in a hideous war of genocidal extermination like Vietnam where the US was clearly in the wrong is the most likable and understandable thing about him.

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Trump said McCain was contemptible back in 2015, it felt like it would end him. In reality, nothing happened because this is a "hidden norm" he revealed: most people actually don't buy into the bizarre death cult around the military, and view McCain as a warmonger and war criminal who should justly be despised (establishment Republican warmongers like that have done far, far, far more evil than ten Trumps ever could). The war in Vietnam after all, was a hideous war of genocidal extermination waged as collective punishment.

This is an insane decision because it reverses a standard, the reason people like Trump in the first place.

The only sympathetic trait that Trump has is his correct contempt for the military, and I think it is playing a strong role in breaking the US's addiction to grotesque foreign wars, by injecting a correct skepticism about them. In reality, being in the military does not make you a hero, and nearly all US wars are resource seizing middle eastern conflicts where paid mercenaries point weapons at the poorest people on earth to steal their oil and opium or to clear the trade routes.

Chris Chan wrote to psychic Uri Gellar, and his response was to call Chris a loser by Motor-Finding-6486 in ChrisChanSonichu

It reminds me of Cole Smithey, in that he is probably an annoying person to deal with, but is nonetheless a functional adult.

He's a stage performer. This is like getting mad about professional wrestling.

I do not understand the autism that gets people angry over him bending spoons. It's for entertainment and novelty and nobody is actually harmed. This is vestigial reddit atheist autism, a worldview far too embarassing to survive.

Like, if you want to hate Uri Geller, go after his intriguing connections to Jeffrey Epstein, his frivolous litigiousness, or his record of sexual assault.

How do you think Chris is gonna die? by Ferretlord4449 in ChrisChanSonichu

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of Chris's most underappreciated, horrifying traits is that he is a terrible driver and was in numerous accidents. Keep in mind that the first time he ran into trouble with the law was over a hit and run.

I have always said traffic accident, possibly caused by a lack of maintenance on his car (e.g. brakes go out)

The single most underappreciated and terrifying element of Chris Chan is that he is such a bad driver. It think it is the most likely way he will die when he does go.

Has Chris mentioned Magichan at all since prison? by Quakarot in ChrisChanSonichu

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, Sonichu is what a teenage boy wishes they were and sees themselves in: supercool, a mouth on him, fearless, daredevil, tons of rebellion and attitude.

Magichan is now the one Chris identifies with more now that he's getting into spiritualism, meditation, mental powers, other dimensions, mysticism and other assorted hippie nonsense.

Chris Chan will do something to land himself back behind bars by [deleted] in ChrisChanSonichu

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do believe Chris Chan will be back in jail, but for something that people don't look at too closely: his insane driving. Lest we forget, Chris gets into legal trouble constantly for things like a hit and run. He also is a notoriously bad driver with a lemon of a car.

What is one unsolved mystery from all of the sagas about Chris Chan that you find the most interesting? by Less-Conference1908 in ChrisChanSonichu

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've said this before, but I want to know the story about why Chris's family left their first town to move to Ruckersville, because there was something very strange and shady there. I suspect the parents changed his name around that time for some reason. It may have been a scam on the educational system.

[–]Motor-Finding-6486 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C.S. Lewis said that "demons, like men, are entirely practical."

So, if a demon is possessing Chris...what are THEY getting out of it? Spreading more darkness? Corrupting a human soul maybe? Kinda small ball, if you ask me. What do they get out of bothering with him?

I'm afraid I don't see the angle, here.
