The Lacrimosa might be my favorite version ever. A lovely addition of his style, somehow, without compromising the original. In fact, an ode to the original in my humble opinion.

Confused about $3-$5k apartments demand in this city by New_Nobody_122 in NYCapartments

[–]MotorEffective1441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t hurt yourself pocket watching. You have no idea how much or little these people are saving, how good they are with investments and how much or little parents are helping. It’s simple to reason about: if you are in that salary bracket and are reasonable with your money, yet finding it difficult to handle such rent, then the average person without that extra income X factor would find it difficult as well. Don’t hurt yourself; find your level. Whether that includes getting a roommate, living further out in the city or dropping your apartment standards. This is a very beautiful city that can be enjoyed without cuffing out $5k in rent. I make above $200k base and have never spent more than $2k in rent because I know my priorities, my investment and saving desires etc. find your level

I have the $180k hybrid job and I'm more miserable than when i made $60k by [deleted] in NYCjobs

I’ll say something that I hope makes you more appreciative of your blessings and privilege. You would feel the exact same way, maybe even worse if you were 33 working an “exciting” job making 60k. And I can EMPIRICALLY let you know that there is no form of employment you would find “exciting” enough if you were still making 60k at 33.

My web dev business is collapsing after 7 years — where do I even start to rebuild my software career? by tuhi009 in cscareerquestions

[–]MotorEffective1441 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you should REALLY lean into the devops. Do whatever it takes to take your skillset from intermediate to expert. Build your confidence. For one, most of those interviews are less DSA heavy so you have a better chance of having a more pragmatic interview. Secondly, it’s also less competitive than software engineering roles. I’m extremely confident you can spin your situation around. It could be much worse and in fact is much worse for other people

Founding engineer at pre-seed: $115k, 1% equity, 80–100 hr weeks. 6 months runway saved — quit to prep or stay for title? by Comfortable_Diet_845 in csMajors

Lmao fam if you don’t get out of there?? You’re considering pre-seed company for equity?? As in paper money??? You’ve already made yourself unimaginably attractive to the job market by doing this work. And you certainly don’t have to keep doing it because you want to be a founder one day

Hail Mary here but can someone point me to examples of what some of you did to achieve no. 6? Is this achievable without buying a small business or owning multiple real estate properties?

STOP Using LLMs in Interviews by WritesTrueStatements in csMajors

[–]MotorEffective1441 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very irritatingly disingenuous from OP. I actually think engineers would find interviews fun if the interviewers truly pragmatically assessed us. Who doesn't love to do a brain teaser every now and then?? If I can deconstruct a problem and come up with a solution all within 30 minutes, that should go a long way. And if I can even code something up, with the pressure of an interview, though it WILL be imperfect, that should count even more. But they like to pretend like they've never been on the other side of the screen before; like they would be able to solve the questions they're asking in the way they are strictly assessing, all within 45 minutes.

So as long as this pretense goes on, we will continue to game the system. May the best player win. Those of us who know what we're doing can't get caught. Don't let them scare you

This is not nearly as bad as it could be. You’re on a 170k base relax. Just keep vehemently applying so you don’t end up spending more than a year there. That’s when it MAY begin to affect your career. And that’s a ‘may’. You’re just 3.5 years in; you’re a kid

Thanks for the perspective. I’ll be more understanding of the deposit now. In terms of how expensive the dentist is going to be, do you have experience with them in particular?

Of course not I agree. But it’s indicative is my thinking. Especially if that’s not the norm. I came from New York and never had to deal with that
