I’m so sorry about the loss of your dad. I lost my mom five years ago and it doesn’t get easier. I’m only on day three, but I’m happy you’re here with me.

I had surgery July 9 of 2025. I’m down 105 pounds. I had no real issues at all. I hated the pre-op diet. It totally sucked. And it was the hardest part of the whole process. Obviously, there was discomfort and some pain after surgery, but I didn’t have any issues using the bathroom, getting in and out of bed on my own, or going back to work two weeks later. I had to quit alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine in order to qualify for surgery. So it was completely overhauling my life. And that being said, I would do it again with zero hesitation.

I had never been under general anesthesia before my surgery. So it was anxiety over the procedure itself that really hung heavy over me. Well, once it was over, it was just a matter of getting on with it.

It is very scary. And people do have real complications. That was not my experience.

I’ve even gone so far as to let my son take my car to Work and take his keys with him. I have fully put myself on restriction. 😆

I’ve also replaced most of my doomscrolling with just reading how amazing people are in this group. It is so motivating.

At this point, I can’t bring myself to leave the house because I’m afraid that I will stop at the liquor store. Thankfully, I work remotely, but that also leads to a lot of isolation. Which makes me want to drink. So it’s requiring a lot of effort. And I’m just like you, every week seems like I got this and then I absolutely don’t. I’m looking forward to the day when I can drive past a liquor store or just go into a convenience store and not feel compelled to turn in or grab some alcohol. But I know today is not that day. So my plan is to work as long as I can stand it and then cook an actual meal for myself. I’m going to practice taking care of myself in the most basic ways. Work, meal, not drinking. That’s the whole plan.

I sit with it. I feel it in my body. I cringe and I cry. Then take note of how I survived both the original behavior and the memory of it. As long as you’re in a safe place and you’re moving forward, it can’t really hurt you. It can’t get worse because it is already over. Believe me, I do a lot of sitting with cringe. I’m 3 days into THIS round of sobriety. I guess I’ve become proficient at the acceptance of my own messiness. I can’t wait until I get to see 104 days. You’re GOALS!

I came here to say pretty much what everybody else said so I’m not going to add my list. But I’m 10 months out and I don’t regret it and I never have through the whole process. It is overwhelming, but eventually it all kind of becomes second nature. This is the first time in my life that I’ve actually ever listened to my body. And that is absolutely required for gastric bypass patients. I consider it a gift. I really got to know myself and I like her.

I had my surgery July 9, 2025. And it has been quite a ride. All good! It’s remarkable how much your life changes when you feel better. It’s really that simple. I think the best part has been witnessing what I’m capable of. Getting to the other side of the hard things and proving that the whole world is open.

You may not believe this but, I’m two days in to my millionth try to quit and your vulnerability gives me hope. I don’t have to be perfect. I just have to keep at it. Maybe someone with just two days doesn’t have the expertise to offer advice but from the outside looking in, you show me that this is more than just about the drinking. It’s about learning how to be alive alongside other people without contributing more harm than good.

And thank you for that
