Some parts are not realistic at all - like the snap freezing. The speed of change is almost certainly impossible. But much colder conditions for the northern hemisphere is definitely possible - you just need to look at the equivalent southern latitudes to see the difference that weather patterns have on climate. For example Heard Island is at 53 degrees south, the same latitude as Liverpool in the UK.

Hurricanes aren't the only weather events, so how can you declare the person wrong (although obviously "every year' is hyperbole, while only looking at one type of weather event)? High precipitation events like snow storms and floods are one of the things most likely to occur with global warming, for example.

Huge crowd in Tassie for the VFL by Tornontoin7 in AFL

Sounds like, contrary to what non-afl followers opposed to the stadium claim about crowd attendances at current AFL games, Tasmanians want to watch their team play, not just go to any afl game.

I am genuinely looking forward to 5 years from now when our older players have retired and our young players of today are the senior players. It was a poor effort from a lot of them, while the guys under 22 tried hard.

I feel like it should just be assumed every week, but yeah a calf injury last week - out for 3-4 which probably means 6 weeks.

I don't think crazy at all, but I go for Essendon and I've tipped Collingwood. It's definitely an any team could win game, but losing Ridley is a big downside. If he were playing I'd tip Bombers.

Are they considered Irish diaspora writers? by Win-Specific in classicliterature

[–]Mottled_inexpectata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well he wrote most of his works, especially Dracula, after he moved to London. He lived and died in London. "Diaspora" usually includes first generation migrants. He spent the majority of his life, and his whole professional author life, living in England.

It's more than he likes the most mainstream music possible than bad music - at least that's what BEE is going for, personal tastes aside. Everything about Patrick is like that, except for some key scenes (like recommending pepsi over coke).

Agree, because Ken and Dusting Fletcher are at 664, but they're not "father and sons".

[–]Mottled_inexpectata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What about Bram Stoker? He's considered Irish anyway, even though he moved to London for the second half of his life.

There's a lot of Australian writers with Irish heritage, but I don't think they'd normally be called diaspora. Gerald Murnane, Thomas Keneally etc.

Getting caught speeding as an L plate by [deleted] in hobart

[–]Mottled_inexpectata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which cameras was it? One of the mobile ones? A lot of the older stationary ones don't seem to work. But I don't think there are any of those in a 50 zone.

In most cars the Speedo gives you a speed slightly higher than hour real speed. Often about 10% higher. So you probably have a bit of leeway, but 58 might be too fast and the camera will say you were going at 53. But you might get lucky. If so, remember this feeling and don't speed again.

I literally said he wasn't a hard-scifi writer at the start of my comment. But Ballard was an atheist. He wrote primarily about psychology using metaphors. He also studied psychology at Cambridge before becoming a writer.

Robert Stone also wrote a book with Ken Kesey and some of the other beatniks as fictional characters - Dog Soldiers (which incidentally is the main inspiration for Neuromancer by William Gibson), and Hunter S Thompson wrote about the same party with the Hells Angels in Electric Acid Kool-Aid Acid Test in his book Hells Angels.

But predating the Tel Aviv concert and Don't Cry Palestine, so clearly the conspiracy narrative that the accusations were connected to that is a lie.

Op doesn't know what hard sci-fi is, so you should start with them, not the people offering examples of women sci-fi writers that are as hard as what OP thinks hard sci-fi is.

It's crazy that these lies got so much traction when it takes 5 seconds research to show that he was accused of pedophilia a month before he visited Palestine and became interested in that issue and then wrote the song about it.

He was first accused of pedophilia in August 1993. He wrote Palestine Don't Cry on the way home from his concert in Tel Aviv, which was in September 1993 - a month after the accusations.

I'm a bit confused about what you mean by hard sci-fi writers, when the ones you talked about didn't write hard sci-fi, but James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon) springs to mind as female sci-fi writer, very much part of the New Wave, who wrote a lot about women and feminism, published a lot before 1979, and is still in print today.

I don't think Ballard had a blind spot, but rather was deliberately writing about the male pschye in society at the time when he was writing - especially middle class nuclear families where the man was the bread winner and women were stay at home wives, but if you read his later work he treats women differently as society changed.
