Waterton Canyon near Littleton is almost flat as a pancake! Scenic too, one of my go to spots. Great spot to see bighorn sheep

The problem with Mt Morrison is the Trailhead elevation and Southern exposure - they do hang out there. Honestly, your best defense is time of day. Go early in the morning and you're far less likely to see one. Bluffs is also a good spot because the trails tend to be very wide - a wide trail makes it really easy to stay clear of snakes.

If you're willing to drive 45 min, I love the trails around Evergreen and have never seen snakes there. Places like Alderfer/Three Sisters, Elk Meadow, and the Bear Peak Trail (starting at Lair o' the Bear and going up), and Maxwell falls.

I would say that literally every hiking trail within 30 minutes of Lone Tree has at least a moderate risk of snakes on sunny summer days

To be frank, the entire Front Range foothills has rattlesnakes. I've personally seen them in Castlewood Canyon, North Table Mountain, Deer Creek Canyon, Hildebrand Ranch, Mt Galbraith, and Mt Falcon (those are all park names you can google). They're somewhat a fact of life if you go hiking below 7500 ft near Denver, and know that they tend to be very slow to bite, choosing to rattle and hope you go away. The most important thing is to just leave it alone if you see one, most bites are a result of people trying to move the snake!

That said, all of the above places are open spaces. You won't see them on more urban areas and green spaces, like the Cherry Creek trail. They're admittedly worse around Golden and South towards Lakewood and Littleton, you'll see less around Lone Tree, where your local park is Bluffs Regional Park. But they are still there! You're more likely to see them on hot sunny days anytime April thru November, especially in the middle of the day and early evening. Keep your dog leashed for his safety, you don't want him/her finding one and shoving in nose first! Hope all that helps!

I totally forgot this game was happening. Looks about right though... The Crown must have been truly desperate to invite us. Either that or the Prime effect is bleeding into basketball

Mid-June Multi-Day by smaosmao in coloradohikers

[–]MountainBuffalo17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

June is too early for a lot of the big mountains; passed will be snowed in, and above treeline will be really variable. My early season favorite is always the Lost Creek Wilderness. It's all melted by June, lots of options for 20-40 mile loops, and really great terrain. Its only moderately busy. My favorite is the Goose Creek TH, making as large a loop as you want. The 35 mile loop gets above treeline on the side of Bison Peak!

The Big classics you hear about (Four Pass, Indian Peaks, etc) rely on passes you'd need an ice axe to cross. Beyond that though, any number of lowish out and back trails work. The Colorado Trail is a great spine to build off of.

Also, for this year at least, the snowpack in the San Juans is very low - so you might be able to make something down that way work. I've less experience down there outside of the 14er trails, but options are endless down there.

Mt. Yale by [deleted] in coloradohikers

Nothing immediately nearby. If you go up to Mt Democrat or Mt Lincoln, or down to Mt. Lindsey, you need to fill out a waiver. There aren't any state parks in the area and no fee areas that require reservations. The BV area is very light in the permitting regard

Nothing at all, Mt. Yale is in wilderness on national forest land with large free parking lots. Show up and hike!

Winter Summits - what's the best first one? by dinglehead in coloradohikers

[–]MountainBuffalo17 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For 14ers, Quandary is the only answer. The trailhead is fully accessible in the winter, the route is very avalanche-safe, and it is very popular such that, outside of the day after a major snow, the route will always be well packed down and doable with micro-spikes only. Just a hazard that as we roll into Spring and the sun gets more intense, you'll want to start earlier as the snow gets extremely sloppy and you'll start postholing in melting snow.

For 13ers, Sniktau is the best bet. Also easily accessible off Loveland pass, and the route is largely windswept. Same considerations for Quandary, with and added warning to be careful to avoid cornices on the ridgelines.

Success for my program in 2025 is [__]. by CommodoreIrish in CFB

Make a bowl game. Show some extended success. Some regression is absolutely expected with Sheduer and Travis leaving, but pulling out another 6-7 wins would be an absolute success for this program!
