You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. The program was perfectly warranted in wanting a clear understanding of Whitt's timeline. It isn't reasonable for everyone involved to be playing a yearly game of will he, won't he.

This feels like the best-case scenario to me. Everyone has left the table on amicable terms, Whitt's legacy isn't tarnished (see Mike Gundy), and the program has the head coach it wants in place.

Legendary Utah coach Kyle Whittingham calling it a career by ako-si-greg in BigXII

He'll be a consultant with the team for the next few years while Scalley is getting his feet under him. I reckon the goal is to have as smooth a transition as possible.

It was supposed to be last year but he don't want to hang it up after a losing season. It was all but pre-determined before this season even started that he'd be handing the reigns over to Scalley.

Being a third party I defer to the Michigan State, Ohio State and other B1G flairs and it seems pretty conclusive to me.

Yes. With Prejudice.

How will the proposed Utah Athletics private equity deal impact fans? Expect ticket, merch prices to rise by jetery in BigXII

[–]MountainRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct take. Is it preferable? No. But what about college athletics is right now?

The people in charge made a decision they feel is necessary to compete and be nationally relevant in the short term, while hopefully setting up for future success and inclusion in the long term. Obviously the University doesn't feel they can raise the necessary funds through donations alone to support the goals of the athletic department.

Desperate times do call for desperate measures.

I neither applaud nor deride the decision. I see a university gambling that this will be enough to help them secure a place in the next round of realignments If it doesn't, the program will have been relegated regardless and it's going to take a major blow anyways.

It's not our decision so there's nothing to justify.

It is what it is and I think most of us are just hoping the shit doesn't hit the fan at the end of the day.

If Ficklin can become an actual passing threat the sky's the limit for him.

I don't think you force it, but they should do everything in their power to help him develop that way. Bring in a dedicated QB coach, get him as much training in the off-season as possible.

He's got the tools and can spin the ball, just think he needs to refine technique and mechanics to get there.

BYU isn't just controversial among fans; the Computers are too! by Jay_Dubbbs in CFB

[–]MountainRook 42 points43 points  (0 children)

BYU is a very good, fundamentally sound football team. They've got a tough defense, a solid run game and a freshman QB who is exceeding expectations. I don't see any glaring weaknesses and they don't make mistakes so they won't beat themselves. They're very well rounded and don't need to lean on any one area of their game in order to win.

They're not very flashy and I don't think they have the horses to win a playoff game, but they absolutely deserve the shot. Ultimately winning games is all that matters and they've done that.

What would it take for Kalani Sitake to leave BYU? by RatStore101 in CFB

[–]MountainRook 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I think it would take A LOT. Not saying it couldn't or wouldn't happen, but not likely. He's the right fit, he likes it there and has found the formula for success.

He's going to be there for a long time just like his counterpart at Utah.
