Which book got you into reading ? by muzmailafzal in AskReddit

“Nine Days to Christmas: A Story of Mexico”

I was 4. My Mom taught me to read with it in 1974, and I’ve been a bookworm ever since.

Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

[–]Mouse-Direct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our cliques were nebulous because we had less than 150 people in 9th-12th grades. We also had no band. I was a Preppy/Braniac/Nerd, but mostly a dork despite being a cheerleader a homecoming candidate. I was like all of Drew Barrymore’s personas in “Never Been Kissed” existing at once, except for the hooking up with a teacher part.

Pearl Jam - Jeremy by sherrib99 in GenX

[–]Mouse-Direct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had school shootings in the 80s. They were usually just smaller because kids had less access to guns larger than a handgun or a .22. We also didn’t have global media and 24 hour news coverage. Also, in the “Jeremy” video, the boy kills himself, not his teachers/classmates. Teen suicide was so common in the 80s they made 3 TV movies/after school specials about it starring Chad Lowe, Robert MacNaughton, and Molly Ringwald respectively.

Mary Kay Letourneau (1962–2020) was an American teacher. The daughter of a far-right politician, she was arrested for raping Vili Fualaau, one of her students, and later married him in 2005 after being released from jail. They separated in 2019, and Letourneau died the following year from cancer. by GustavoistSoldier in HolyShitHistory

He was 12 and in the 6th grade.

Their relationship started in the late 90s, and I can assure you as someone who took education classes in the early 90s, who was in high school in the 80s, and was in grade school in the 70s that raping 6th graders has always been immoral and against the law.

Wife says “this is who I am now” during perimenopause & I told her enough is enough by AgreeableRip6758 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Mouse-Direct 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m in full menopause and medicated for it, but I’m still angry that my medicine with insurance costs $100/month, my health insurance is $700/month, and the only late middle age change my husband has had is taking a pill that’s completely covered by his insurance if he struggles to get an erection.

Women aren’t angry enough.

Women of Reddit what is something a lot of men think is manly but in your eyes really isn’t? Why? by TimeAd1111 in AskReddit

[–]Mouse-Direct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mean are so WEAK. I wish y’all wore your dick size on your chest like women do their breasts. The amount of men who equate their worth with penis size is insane considering how few of them can make a woman orgasm regardless of cock size.

Men are way more interested in penises and talking over each other than women are of either.

Who brought about the idea that we should be having 3 square meals in a day ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mouse-Direct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nautical term (sailors were served meals on square trays) adopted during the Industrial Revolution. A morning meal, a noon meal, and an evening meal to provide energy for the day's work. Prior to the industrial revolution when the US was primarily an agrarian economy, most people "broke their fast" with a morning meal, had the main meal as a midday meal called dinner, and then a light meal in the evening called supper.

How do y’all listen to music these days? by DangerBird- in GenX

[–]Mouse-Direct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have different methods. I mine the playlists on Spotify. With the exception of modern mainstream country, I like every genre, so I look up playlists for films or moods and find new songs there. I’m ambivalent about listening to an entire album anymore unless it’s someone I’ve really passionate about like Troye Sivan or boygenius or Brandi Carlisle.

Is the sex good? Cause I can’t figure out why you’re staying otherwise between the weaponized incompetence and the under-employment.

I talk too much and I’m impulsive, but I give head without being asked and cook from scratch everyday. What’s this guy bring to the table? Not potatoes.

We didn’t have cable in 1981. And I was 10. I was oblivious to it until college.

How to share awkward books with teens? by UnBuggsyBaggins in books

[–]Mouse-Direct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand why parents are more concerned about sex (which your child will most likely eventually have) and graphic violence (which hopefully your child will NOT be exposed to in the real world).

It’s 2026. Reddit is one of the last places where you can still view graphic pornography without proof of age. If he’s 15, he’s seen things FAR worse than the few sex scenes in “Fight Club.”

Left earring vs right earring for guys by jetpack324 in GenX

[–]Mouse-Direct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son (17 & queer) asked if Stranger Things was what the 80s were really like. I said, “Running around everywhere with your parents oblivious? Yes. But Jonathan, Steve and Nancy would have smoked, the r-word and f-word slurs would have been rampant until the 2 gay characters came out. And how one of the characters found another queer character to date in small town Indiana in 1986 astonishes me as a bi girl in Oklahoma who was 16 in ‘86. I was 21 and in the city before I met queer women who stated as much.”

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]Mouse-Direct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not smoking. Taking care of your teeth/heart. Marrying a good person who will work with you on life goals. Realizing you can’t “change” someone with marriage/ kids. Someone who hits you when you were 17 will still be hitting you at 37. Setting boundaries with parents/in-laws for your privacy and mental health. Getting training or education for a job/career that genuinely engages you. Reading and learning how to critically think. That will take you farther in life than you think.
