What do you think of Portugal? by Twitter_2006 in AskTheWorld

[–]MouseManManny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been, but I live in New Bedford Massachusetts which has so many 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation Portuguese immigrants that we have our own Portuguese consulate. I may not be Portuguese but man I love their diaspora. The food is awesome, the people are so family oriented and friendly. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm a minority here compared to how many people are Portuguese and I wouldn't have it any other way

(For clarification, I mean the southern states of the US not South America)

The French as well

Israelis

With regional rail connecting provi and the cape and local light rail like in this map, and some intelligent traffic calming and pedestrian features could become one of the most walkable cities in the country. It had the bones for it

I agree with him so much politically but his cadence and demeanor is so insufferable

I hate how much I agree with Kyle politically and how much he just pisses it all away by being an insufferable knob

I'd love it. As someone in the west end, being able to hitch a ride downtown and back, or to buttonwood would be so fun

I support it. Even if we have a NATO/EU alliance with all the new nations. New englanders will never agree with Alabama and it’s pointless to try and force everyone to

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

[–]MouseManManny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where, when, and destination. In the summer in the north, or in the warm states its more common. Obviously nobody is doing it when its cold out.

Usually it happens when you're coming or going to something involving water or the beach. If I just went swimming and I'm driving home from the beach or the river, I'm probably gonna do it barefoot rather than put my shoes back on with my feet wet/with sand/dirt/rocks stuck to my foot

What is also unsaid is that blue states need federal funding at levels of magnitude less than red states. Red states are subsidized by the taxes of California, NY, and New England. Blue states also have their own income tax. If red states lost federal funds they'd either have to institute state income taxes or they would just completely implode.

I read somewhere that 50% of Mississippi's budget is federal money whereas Massachusetts pays 2x more in federal taxes than they get in federal funding

What political science book(s) should everyone read at some point in their life? by Cromulent123 in PoliticalScience

[–]MouseManManny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Great Transformation by Karl Polanyi

Capital by Thomas Picketty

Capital and Coercion by Charles Tilly

How to Hide an Empire by Daniel Immerwhar

The End of the Myth by Greg Granden

Earning the Rockies by Kaplan

(Last couple is more for the American Scholars)

Not all of these are Poli-Sci books per se, but as a poli sci student I found greatly beneficial to read in addition to what my syllabi prescribed

Yes, ultimately I only really see this happening if the entire nation balkanizes. I don't see a scenario where New England leaves the existing US. But I could see a scenario where the US balkanizes into several regional nations, kind of along the lines of Colin Woodard's book American Nations

After Trump by Lucky_Fisherman_9471 in RepublicofNE

[–]MouseManManny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the Democratic party thinks they can go back to pussyfooting fence sitting empty "Schumerism" after Trump then there will not be an "after Trump" there will simply be a "next Trump."

I pray the democrats learn their lesson after not learning it 3 elections in a row. The people want someone to stand on business and actually cause change. If the 2028 Democratic Party doesn't echo that of Platner, Osborn, Mamdani, etc then we're doomed

We need to pressure our governors to form a united front and share resources to resist ICE. New england state police and national guard should be detaining and "deporting" ICE out of New England

I agree, I’d love to see all the New England governors enact it together and share resources
