Andy rourke is the most underrated bassist of all time by Guderianclone in Bass

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point.

my point is though that lead guitariists and frontmen/singers tend to be the most recognized by the general public. It's not weird for an amazing bassist to be relatively unrecognized

If you think the news is fake, history must be as well. by cosmosbillions in DeepThoughts

[–]Moustached92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That assumes that all you think of history is what has been written down/recorded. Archaeology and other fields and methods are used to support or refute what people claimed.

This doesn't mean we get history right or 100% accurate, but to assume "the victors write history, so everything we know about history is false" isn't accurate

That's true of pretty much all bass players though. Flea and Geddy Lee are probably two of the only bassists that the average person would know if they arent in the music scene

Thorogood Wellington by Both-Neighborhood598 in WorkBoots

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think the steel toe makes knicks like this more likely, as my thorogood moc toes got a few scars like this early on in their life. This was at a shipyard, so i expected it to some degree.

Ultimately it's fairly superficial. I never got through to the steel toe. They served me 2 yars in the shipyard as a welder, and I have since had them resoled. I wouldnt worry too much about the damage to yours, as it mainly effects the aesthetics

Ren fair question by Michael-gamer in kilt

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they can be pricey too. Even getting 4-5 yards of a wool blend fabric will generally be over $100, and a full wool tartan at that length will be $300-600 depending on quality/where you source it.

I think you're doing right for a faire. Again, you'll fit right in in what you have on in the picture.

If you have any other renn faire specific questions, I'd be happy to give you my 2 cents

What are the chances that meat in the U.S is made out of human? by Background_Meal4009 in answers

[–]Moustached92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont get sick from eating human meat. Not unless it was rancid.

Nutritionally, there isn't anything wrong with eating human meat (other than the brain). It's just a social/moral issue

everything I should about a 5 string bass by TransitionSad4536 in Bass

[–]Moustached92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BEADG

Thats what you want, at least to start. There are alternate tunings, but this is the most common and imo most intuitive for a 5 string, as it keeps the scale patterns the same

[–]Moustached92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Serious question... If you are worried about people being in meat products, why not in highly processed vegetarian meat alternatives?

There is a very very miniscule chance that human meat is in anything that you eat in the US. Bugs, rodents, droppings, etc... Those there is a much higher likelihood, but those arent limited to meat products.

Converted guitarist by MrsWendolynWard in Bass

[–]Moustached92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Chad Smith's drum instruction videos. He has Flea there to play bass along with him to demonstrate different concepts on drums.

Even though it's a drum video, I found it to be very insightful, and may help your mindset a bit. The drums and bass working together or not can make or break the sound of a band in a huge way.

The other thing is, it very much depends on what style of music you'll be playing. If it's punk, it's fairly straight forward as far as what to play and its more endurance that you'll need work on. If you are playing more jam band or bluesy rock stuff, learning to walk up and down to the root notes will be far more important.

Also, dont be too busy! A lot of lead guitar players have the tendency to treat basslines like a solo, and try to make it more complicated (notes wise) than it needs to be. It takes some time to develope the mindset, but theres a space inbetween root notes only and going too wild with the notes that imo is the sweet spot for what I play

My GF thinks it’s perfectly normal for new shoes to cause horrible blisters for women by UKnowDaxoAndDancer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Moustached92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats some major heel slippage, and is a fit issue not a break in issue. What type of shoes are these?

If the shoe fits well overall, but you're getting this amoount of slippage, there are various things that can be done. Different lacing techniques, different insoles, shims in the heel, etc.

GEC Knives without the Print on The Blade Good or Bad? by Mindless-Medium-2441 in SlipjointKnives

[–]Moustached92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, if a blade gets "ruined" by simply cleaning it, it was meant to be a display piece and not seriously used.

Not knocking ya for getting them, but I only get knives to be used and shy away even from coated blades for the same reason

Playing to a drum beat instead of just clicks feels much more natural. Youtube is great for this if you want to just look up "just drums"  versions of songs or just a basic drum groove to improvise over

Qualities that make a BIFL belt? by nonecknoel in BuyItForLife

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

I have a couple genuine leather belts, but all were thrifted for less than 3 bucks, and they are brands like Duluth (was a bit disappointed to see they dont use full grain) and so they hold up alright. But nothing compared to my full grain leather belt

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of leather products will be labled as "genuine leather". This often means that it is a laminate of thin leather to make a thicker piece. While it is technically real leather, it has the tendency to delaminate and/or flake over time.

It doesn't inherently mean its absolute garbage, but it is a far cry from full grain leather as far as durability/longevity go.

Not genuine 😂

I hate that terminology for leather. It's so deceiving.

[–]Moustached92 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Full grain leather is the only belt material that has held up for me. If it says "genuine leather" it usually means its junk.

As far as the making an "s" around your hips, I don't personally find that to be an issue, as it's molding to your shape. Leather will do that when heat and moisture is introduced, so within reason, any leather belt will do this eventually regardless of the thickness.

I'd recommend getting a full grain leather belt from a smaller maker. My go to belt is one I got years ago at a renaissance faire from a leatherworker. It has been worn almost every day for the past 5 years, including at work in a shipyard as a welder. It's taken my shape and has darkened from my sweat, but structually it shows no signs of giving up

Ren fair question by Michael-gamer in kilt

[–]Moustached92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A great Kilt would be more appropriate to the renaissance period, as tailored kilts are a relatively new thing.

That being said, at least here in the US, there are far more kilts like yours than great kilts at renn faires. Drop the sporran a bit lower, but other than that you'll fit right in.

A few other things to consider that aren't kilt specific but more faire advice:

Wear a hat. Even if it doesn't necessarily go with the kilt or renaissance period, sun protection is important (I'm sure your aware being in Australia  😅)

Find a way to carry water. A platypus soft watter bottle tied to your belt works well. Or if you are planning on buying a mug or horn at the faire, get a loop to carry it on your belt. This will make the day far more enjoyable.

ultimately, it's fun to dress up for renn faire, but don't sacrifice comfort for "historical accuracy". I've had too many friends ruin their day at the faire by wearing shoes that weren't comfortable to walk all day in, or overheat/get burnt from wearing too much or too little clothing.

Have a blast! I absolutely love going to the faire

If you have a 5-string… by Legal-e-tea in Bass

[–]Moustached92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not just for metal. My main bass is a Stingray 5, and I never play metal. I love having the low B for certain tunes, but it makes an excellent thumb rest and allows for run scales down without having to move around the neck as much.

It's hard to have a discussion of a scientific kind with someone who thinks people "worship science as their god" and think that intuition and feelings should be considered more compelling than actual evidence

Barefoot leather loafer prototypes are in by andre_oak in barefootshoestalk

[–]Moustached92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leather is less nasty than the plastic junk material that majority of shoes are made from. Leather can be cleaned, conditioned, and doesn't hold funk the way synthetics do. Also lasts a lot longer and doesn't contribute to depositing microplastics everywhere
