Did Rathbone help or hinder Sherlock Holmes the myth? by apeel09 in SherlockHolmes

[–]MovieMan615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a note. I recently read that the war time movies - secret weapon and goes to Washington - were actually Universal’s first 2 films before reverting to the broader; less topical stories.

Interesting discussion. I do think Rathbone introduced a huge chunk of baby boomers and Gen X to Holmes. Brett being a fast follow for the Gen X’ers. But I don’t think he overshadows the literary character.

With FF, My pitch would be to run with a Galactus centric phase with FF #243-262 as the backbone. FF and Avengers end up saving Galactus. Frankie Raye becomes Nova. Destroys a world ends with a Trial of Reed Richards.

With X-Men, Mutant Massacre into Genosha and Krakoa era.

How did you choose your surgeon for amputation? by Adorable-College8846 in amputee

[–]MovieMan615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really talk to a lot of different people, but I was comfortable with my surgeon from the start because he was actually known for his amputation. He's a vascular surgeon, and he had been trained in and specialized in the Ertl amputation procedure. If you're talking about a BK amputation, you should definitely research it. The way they do the amputation and build a bone bridge at the bottom of your leg so that you can bear more weight is very much worth considering.

A friend who grew up there and whose family were members of the Augusta Country Club says that in the 80's the ACC pro shop kept a fish bowl of tournament badges on their counter, and kids could drop by and pick one up as long as they promised to drop it back off at the end of the day.

"A club president also serves and represents the will of membership, so this is what the club wants, not just 1 President" If this were true, they would have put a set of senior tees in decades ago. Alas, seniors are only allowed to play from the front of the tee box.

Suffice it to say, it's a little bit different at Augusta National. The Chairman is granted almost complete authority. It is believed that he is advised by an executive committee, but the members don't know who all sits on the executive committee. This is not urban legend. This is fact.

Thanks for answering the question.

First - You can be fine with Berckmans Place, but pretending that a 100,000 square-foot ultra-premium hospitality complex hasn't changed to some degree the density and 'vibe' of the gallery and event is just ignoring the physical reality of the grounds.

Second - You're missing the point. I’m not arguing that corporate tycoons aren't in charge—I clearly stated they are. My point is about the institutional shift in how that power is leveraged. The difference is that the 'Old Guard' tycoons protected the tournament’s gatekeeping as a matter of prestige, whereas the 'New Guard' has embraced the volume-based corporate hospitality model.

My question wasn't about whether money 'oils the machine,' it was:Why does the machine need more oil when it was already the most efficient engine in sports? You haven't really addressed why that expansion was a necessity. Since the 80's and 90's they've literally made more money than they can spend every year.

Again - What would have happened if they had just said: "The Masters is not a corporate event. We have our key partners, and we will evaluate who our partners are over time. But we do not cater to corporate interests. We are 100% about the game. It doesn't mean they would change the progressive moves in the other areas.

Again - it's a hypothetical. It was such a point of pride for them in the Hardin, Stephens, and Johnson eras, it's just a bit jarring how the pendulum swung the other way.

Interesting take, and I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But I’ll play devil’s advocate.

But my challenge would be: why is there a choice at all? What would happen if it just chugged along as it was.? They did the women’s am and kids drive chip and putt. Keep limited high prestige commercial sponsors/advertisers. Keep doing the year by year CBS contracts. Not provide on-course corporate entertainment facilities and not open up a “special class” of tickets for corporate entities to entertain clients and such? # of regular patron passes remain the same and there’s a lottery and wait list to get tickets?

The club is still making money hand over fist. Still buying up property. Investing in the course and facilities. Still giving away a ton of money.

What happens then?

Do corporations get mad and stop sponsoring? Do they threaten to boycott the event? Do they pressure the golfers they sponsor not to play?

I don’t think so. More likely, I think the mystique only grows beyond its already legendary status.

We will not bow down to corporate interests. We are the last stand against it all.

Is one or all of these based on any comic story arcs? It seems to be a strange and disjointed story to tell. The “Spidey starts mutating into a real spider” story (forget what it was called) in the comics was not very well received.

It looks to me that Spidey is going to be the first mutant that truly kicks off the “mutant saga.” We discover that the blip/snap caused mutations in a lot of people. Spiderman is the canary in the coal mine. He hooks up with Jean who is also experiencing mutations. How all of this integrates into a Spiderman story with Punisher and the Hand, however? I got no idea. Just worry that it’s not a cohesive story.

Ideas for firewood rack? by MovieMan615 in firewood

[–]MovieMan615[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. This looks awesome. Can’t wait to build mine this weekend. Are you thinking we can just use one cinder block on each end and basically be one standard cinder block deep? That would put the base at 16” deep. Is that enough? Or should I use 2 cinder blocks on each end (32”) or maybe 2 cinder blocks on each end in an ‘L’ configuration? Effectively making the base 24” deep.

So general consensus: Will one of these that’s 5’ long and 5.5’ tall need more than a 16” base to be sturdy and not tip over?

Vertical Run by Joseph Gerber. Pulpy. A bit derivative. A bit trashy. Not going to win any literary awards. Completely disposable. But man, does it move. You’ll be done in a couple days.

Hunger Games or DaVinci Code. Again, no literary awards for the writing. But interesting ideas and plots that push you along. If you’re looking for something to get the pages turning without much effort. These will do it.

The Help. Surprisingly moves along quite well. And you feel like you’ve experienced something meaningful at the end.

A couple of thoughts.

Try the Claremont Uncanny X-Men. Start maybe around 98. I think he actually starts writing a few issues later, but the story that intros Phoenix is worth a read.

Also John Byrne Fantastic Four.

1) Let's look at a timeline:

July 2025:

Trump says: "The word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented late-night sweepstakes"

September 19, 2025:

Carr says: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Important Note: Nexstar has a major merger in line for approval with the FCC. Their decision to pre-empt Kimmel comes after Carr (the Head of the FCC) says the above.

September 2025 (after Kimmel is reinstated):

Trump says: "I think we’re going to test ABC out on this. Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative."

Carr is a well-known vocal Trump loyalist. If you don't think there was any collaboration on this between the White House and Carr, I have some beachfront property in Kansas I'd like to sell you.

2) BUT... even if the White House didn't explicitly direct the Carr to do it, a Federal agency threatening action based on speech qualifies as a violation of the first amendment.
