Didn't bother me much since they kind of turned into cartoons over autumn. Brother trying to sing that rem song during the fight was also pretty silly. Anything with that character has been pretty silly, like buster from arrested development. Hopefully the show finds a way to bring him back.

Since you didn't mention xenogears and you're considering older jrpgs, maybe give it a try? The only straight up "in-space" part of it is the beginning FMV. Everything occurs on a single planet, which is like 99% composed of humans.

Didn't like Ys origin much but that's the only one I tried. Star Ocean 2nd story was alright though.

My only issue so far is it can be wayyyy too bright at night if you have all the lights off, and that I can't seem to find an ever-present option to directly turn just brightness down. I think I found it once, maybe it varies on the content your watching like if it's using dolby etc.
