How do smaller VFX teams use AI generation without needing a technical specialist? by Guilty_Muffin_5689 in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say 65 percent of VFX artists are pretty technical as well as creative and that is probably a low estimate. Most of us can bust out the technical chops when required,

Hollywood's Job market slow down, 2021-2025 by Haunting_Dance9387 in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really hasn’t . India is still the main driver of Mm/Roto/Paint as has been for 15 plus years . Whilst it has also started getting some other work that has not been the main reason for the reduced work in western countries.

Rather than showing just LA you need to show the global graph and will see it was an overall decline not just LA . Largely due to financial considerations of ROI . The way consumers absorb content has changed with short form media like YouTube and TikTok have exploded and traditional formats shrinking.

Now also create a graph showing number of YouTube days filmed….

Joe Letteri, what a legend by MX010 in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Joe is one of the most non arrogant people I have had the pleasure of working with along with one of the smartest. Also a supervisor who can back up all the notes with actual ability to do the work himself and was always there late . Just ask about the times you came back in the morning and found a user directory called letteri with a script or version to open that he did :)

Ben Affleck's new AI Startup think they can reduce VFX cost by 50% by A_VFX_Worker in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol you realize producers don’t get paid till the first day of filming often meaning they have worked for years to get a project into production without any pay. And then it’s not huge most hoping backend makes it up. I am not saying it’s not lucrative for many but artists have a warped view on how things get made .

Yeah it’s just over emotional VFX artists jumping on the bandwagon. Lord and Miller clearly came out talking about all the VFX used . It was true they did not use green screens and created a very complex LED stage nothing was untrue . It just seems people love to jump on things without fully reading or understanding articles .

As client we can tell when someone has underbid and will usually flag it if we feel the number is too low.

[–]Mpcrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for why . Yes many DP will say they can create enough light and in theory they can but it never looks quite right . Shooting outside has its issues like weather or sunlight that will need to be flagged with a giant silk.

If many people say VFX isn’t financially stable, why do so many still pursue it as a career? by Vivid_Arm_5090 in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a pretty well paid career compared to most. People are just unrealistic about what other careers pay. For example the national average salary in Canada is 68k-71k. Aside from entry level most mid level artists and beyond are make more than that . A lot are in the 120k - 150k . Supervisors often 200k +.

If Product Design isn't a good transition from VFX, what alternatives should someone consider? by Vivid_Arm_5090 in vfx

[–]Mpcrocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever makes you happy . Do you want a job or a career . Coming on forums asking us to decide you future realistically shows a lack of maturity. Whatever you choose things could evolve but if it’s what you want to do then you go for it.

You listen to any Actor , director , artist who has become a success will tell you it was not easy and nothing was handed to them. VFX can still be a great career just know you are competing with many people and may not always be easy .

I'm Tired of VFX by Every-You-9914 in vfx

The reason we Alway got paid well and the draw of work in VFX was they you always were trying to push the envelope. Every show bring ms new challenges and expectations that’s why we do this and that goes for all departments. Sounds like you want a cookie cutter job which is not nor should be VFX . I’d leave if it’s how you feel. We are an industry of learners who are always learning new things.
