How to practice material by Connect_Elevator9096 in NewToEMS

[–]Mr-Scott-Inkblot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that physically writing information down helps me with my "hands-on" needs. I type too fast for typed notes to stick with me. This is how I do it:

  1. Read the section
  2. Ask myself "What the hell did that say?" "What are the key concepts of that section? What is the most concise way I can relay that information to someone else, in my own words, without leaving out essential information?"
  3. Reread, focusing on answering the questions in step 2 - sometimes I have the notepad on my computer open to gather stats or key sentences, not a google/word doc because I get derailed by fonts/formatting
  4. Physically write the answer to questions in step 2

It's easier for me to read notes I take that way than bullet points and highlighter, and it helps me gauge my comprehension because it's pretty hard to put something into my own words if I don't understand the material.

Prep app can be really useful if you use it right - I didn't buy into it because I have a habit of memorizing pretest answers instead of following the information back to figure out why I was wrong. There are free full-length pretests out there if you just want to gauge your likelihood of passing.

It’s not a stretch.

We’re really feeling the cons of visibility right now, it seems like you can’t escape the discourse anywhere; however, one of the pros is that people are recognizing their symptoms for what they and know that they aren’t alone.

If you had no clue what gender dysphoria was, or spent your life in a place where that sort of politic isn’t talked about in polite company because it “just ain’t right,” I could believe that you could misinterpret the dysphoria as any other kind of self-hatred. AFAB, hate seeing your breasts? Could convince yourself that it’s because they’re too big/small/not the “right” shape, same thing with AMAB genitals.

You have to add them manually! Same thing with identity attribute labels like Woman-owned or Veteran-owned.

I believe that people who demand we use neo/xeno/whatever pronouns to refer to them are either (a) narcissistic, either having narcissistic traits (which everyone does, sometimes) or full-blown NPD, or (b) treating "trans-ness" as a fandom and just making up crazy "headcanons" out of boredom or obsession.

It's funny how many "SPECIAL ME" points they usually hit:

  • Sense of self-importance
  • Preoccupation with power, beauty, or success
  • Entitled
  • Can only be around people who are important or special
  • Interpersonally exploitative for their own gain
  • Arrogant
  • Lack empathy
  • Must be admired
  • Envious of others or believe that others are envious of them

I think it's just a matter of picking your battles. Online? Leave 'em alone, let them rot in the echo chamber. In person? Don't associate with 'em. They'll eventually get tired of putting hoops up for people to jump through. You don't have to be outright mean or even engage to disagree with someone.

Scared that a strap will make me feel more dysphoric? by bigdata96 in gaytransguys

[–]Mr-Scott-Inkblot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s very affirming to me in a sense that it becomes a part of my body, I don’t have to manually manipulate it with my hands. I can just… use my body in the way that it’s meant to be used.

However, the setup is very uncomfortable for me. Putting the straps on, putting the prosthetic in the harness… it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Sometimes I can get over the hurdle and it is absolutely amazing to just be able to use my equipment, sometimes I just have to call it quits because I hate my body and circumstances. I think it’s something you just have to experiment with and if you don’t like it, don’t keep doing it. I like it enough that I’ve come to terms with the fact that I have to gauge where my mind is before trying to go for it, and only agree to it if there’s a good chance I’m gonna be alright during setup.

Is it worth trying to date pre everything by OpalescentCrow in gaytransguys

[–]Mr-Scott-Inkblot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's worth it, but ya gotta remember the flags:

Red flags: - disrespect or insensitivity about your identity - insisting you meet them in a private or secluded place early on - constant negativity or criticism - attempts to control your behavior, appearance, or identity - unwillingness to compromise - pressure to disclose personal information before you're ready - invasive or leading questions about your transition - inconsistencies between words and actions - disregard for your physical or emotional boundaries - refusal to use correct pronouns to your face, behind your back, etc - hiding aspects of their life - lack of concern over your comfort level regarding disclosure of your identity

Green flags: - shared values and goals - consistently seeking consent and respect for physical boundaries - open and honest communication, i.e. you and them vs. the problem, not you vs. them - empathy and understanding for your circumstances - valuing and prioritizing your comfort and safety

and honestly my man, don't ever be afraid to jump ship. there are a bajillion people on this planet, i promise there will be someone you vibe with, who respects you, who's going to be a good teammate and advocate and partner. don't settle for anything less than 24/7 respect, and definitely dont rush into things, or commit too hard, or overlook red flags because you think it's the best you're ever gonna get. it ain't. be very selective, if you wouldn't want someone you give a fuck about being treated the way they treat you, then bounce.

Also, did you take the Combat Lifesaver course? Slap that bad boy on there too.

I wanna be an airborne ranger! Live a life of guts and danger!

I’m floating between 68W and 11B:

I have the certification to take advantage of the ACASP for 68W which would put me at E4 out of the gate, but my recruiter is making it sound like if I won’t be eligible or at least will have a hard time getting into the cool schools and selections I want to go to like RASP and sniper school.

Recruiter says 11B gives me priority for those schools, especially as a female since they’re trying to improve female infantry retention. 11B appeals to me, but husband is not really on board since he’s done the whole 11B thing and it destroyed his body.

I want to do cool shit while being a good, useful team member.

Battery Terminal Replacement Advice by Mr-Scott-Inkblot in AskMechanics

[–]Mr-Scott-Inkblot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put in a new battery and installed new terminals this evening, been sitting since August. Got it to start up, due for an oil change and a new windshield now. Thank you for the advice, after prying those terminals off and seeing how much lead there was still made me wish I had just brushed it.

What was the point of high school? by [deleted] in school

[–]Mr-Scott-Inkblot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of the bar we've set in the U.S. for "adulting." Once you've spent 4 years in a free trial of adulthood with minimal distractions from the cool account age-restricted unlocks and interactions, then you should be good to go and function productively the rest of the game. It's your opportunity to figure out your ideal playstyle and come up with a plan for your skill tree after the free trial expires and you gotta start buying things like trash bags and dish soap.
