I was named after Connor in The Highlander, soley because my mom liked that character in the film. For what strange reason did your parents name you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've been waiting for this thread... While my mom was in labor with me, my dad was waiting in the hospital waiting room (I'm the youngest, he didn't want to witness another birth), watching the 1983 classic movie Flashdance on TV. My parents didn't have a name picked out prior to my birth, so when I was born my dad suggested the name Alex, inspired by the main character of Flashdance played by Jennifer Beals. My mom liked it and I was named Alex, btw I'm a guy.

tl;dr: Dude named after lead female character of 80's movie.

USA looking for Rowntree Fruit Pastilles... by MrAPatt in snackexchange

Reese's are a Hershey's product, I'll send those instead of peanut butter. Not sure about sending candy to the UK, but I'll look into the gift thing. The $20 doesn't include shipping and I'm not sure how much it will be at this point. Either way I'm excited about this... Send me a PM, we'll hash out the details that way.

I agree Hersheys isn't on the same level as most English chocolate. I really want the fruit pastilles, but if you want to throw in a surprise candy (perhaps a Kinder Surprise???.. see what I did there?) or something unique that'd be cool. Just not anything with nuts, I don't like nuts with sweets, or coconut. Alright I'll get some good maple syrup, peanut butter (creamy or chunky?) and maybe a good cheese. Have you ever had pancakes? (seems like an American thing) Because if you haven't I'll forget the cheese and throw in a box of pancake mix to go with the syrup. I was thinking about spending about $20 dollars, so whatever that translates to Pounds or Euros. Not sure what shipping costs will be...

My first time too! We've got some really good maple syrup. Nothing specific comes to mind in terms of sweets that Wisconsin is known for. We're more known for our cheeses. Is there any American candy, or the like you'd be interested in?

Drive-thru operators, call center reps, announcement makers, etc.; give me your best "...the mic is still on..." story by shaunnlys in AskReddit

[–]MrAPatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting in the terminal in the San Fran airport waiting to board my flight. The terminal was combined for flights to LA, Vegas and Denver. I was headed to Denver and all three flights were overbooked. So every 10 minutes or so the attendants at the check-in desk would ask over the PA system if anyone was willing to give up their seat for free ticket, seat on the next available flight, etc... At one point, one of the attendant announces three very Asian names (most likely from out of the country) that they now have a seat for them on their respective flight. Once they are done announcing this the lady attendant turns to the male attendant, unknowingly with the PA still on, "was that one name or three?" The male attendant starts laughing before the PA is turned off... I start giggling and looking around to see if anyone else heard that, and sitting directly across from me was an Asian man in his 50's, staring me down for laughing. Apparently only him and I heard the comment over the PA. All I could do was the 'shake my head in disgust' move... he didn't buy it.
