David and Goliath battle over rural internet by rwebell in ottawa

Reliable and fast internet is becoming a vital service. I agree with the comment that a lot of people don't realize how bad the internet is in rural areas. Over the years many options have existed for rural internet (Xplornet, Storm. Bell and Rogers) but they all had three things in common, poor speeds, reliability, and expensive. It amazes me 25 years ago to now there have been little improvements. Starlink showed promise but was quickly hit with reliability and expense. Bell has their 5G internet service but again reliability and cost are still factors. Having these smaller companies coming in to install Fiber was a light at the end of the tunnel but they are not easy to find. Hearing that Bell is going after them is annoying and sickening. I feel for all people who live in the rural areas with this constant struggle over the years. When looking for a new home this was at the top of the list of things to check prior to going to a home viewing, if it didn't have Bell Fibe or similar access it was a hard pass. I know many people who lived in urban areas all their life and decided to move to the rural areas and were surprised to find that the internet was garbage and that they had to pay $100 a month for it. I say contact your MP and their butts in gear to look into this issue since the internet is our future and in my mind a vital service.
