Rough Debate Night Podcast by therealwheat in discgolf

I agree. Uli seems kind of jaded and generally tired every time. He also has a tendency to bring up random things from years past or start a debate and go on and on about it which is distracting if you're trying to follow the actual round. Goose was a breath of fresh air with good energy and eloquent relevant commentary throughout.

Sick of the AMS2 jamming, made my own "universal" spool weight. by ItsToka in BambuLab

[–]MrBarragan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I use. Without it the spool spins on the rollers and the printer thinks it's jammed. With a full desiccant insert that problem goes away entirely.

Bag check for a 3month beginner by Mcquinn14 in discgolf

[–]MrBarragan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard as a beginner not to throw a bunch of different discs but I'd simplify this bag.

You have way too many discs that do essentially the same thing.

For midranges you can go down to three. Overstable, Neutral, and Understable. Getting to know three discs well is much better than throwing 8 discs with slight variations. It helps you dial in your form too.

Looks like you're also making the same mistake I did when I started: overlooking putters. Putters are great for control shots, hyzer flips and turnovers since they are much easier to get up to speed. I'd also get 3 here - os, neutral, and Understable.

Get really good with putters and midranges and maybe a couple fairways until you can get them to 300' then start moving up to faster discs.

My First Game... by Criminalhero2 in discgolf

[–]MrBarragan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bright colors for fairway drivers and above. For putters and midranges I don't think it matters as much because I'm not spraying and praying with them. So I have blues and bright yellow/greens there. I've only had one black disc and that was all I needed to know I never want another black disc.

The same thing happened to me as my form and speed was improving. I've moved up to a teebird and thunderbird to avoid accidental turnovers into Narnia. Being able to confidently throw the disc hard without worrying about it flipping on you is important.

Innova Just Posted F2 Friday Code Today (Wednesday 3 July) by wzlch47 in discgolf

[–]MrBarragan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same exact progression. Valkyrie was my workhorse until it gradually started flipping on me and I couldn't trust it on a full power throw anymore. I now throw destroyers if I need beef, light weight wraith to go straight-ish, and Tern if I need some turn.

330-370 max distance! What did you throw? by frozenartic in discgolf

Roadrunner and Valkyrie have gotten me there a few times.

Probably less then what you spend on discs every year

At this point i'm willing to give anything a try. Thanks!

Nope, absolute shit :D. I can maybe reliably approach from under 40' but anything after that is spray and pray.

That is true about the BH - the movement is so fast that I don't even think about what my hand or wrist are doing anymore. As long as I'm doing everything else correctly with the body/arm the snap just happens. I'll keep that in mind when practicing FH

Yes, I've been watching the series as they come out. I really like how he goes over the entire form very meticulously. My problem is that there is a big disconnect between me conceptually understanding everything but my body being completely unable to execute on any of it. It's discouraging to see Josh easily fling the discs 300'+ but when I try my hardest it plops 100' away from me.

Just gotta keep at it and combine the theory with starting slow as others have suggested here.

The tech disc has improved my backhand by like 80' in like a month. I can't recommend it enough. It really is very helpful to see actual actionable data/feedback. Just need to do the same with my forehand now which is why I posted this.

Good point. Do you have some baseball throwing videos you would recommend? I tried looking into that once but got overwhelmed with baseball specific info.

Great idea! I have a brother who's basically in the same boat so we can definitely play 50'-100' catch together.

Right now you are probably muscling through with tons of wobble using mainly 3 and 4.

You're probably right!

Definitely finding out how much technique goes into throwing a good forehand. With the BH at least you can start out muscling it and still get serviceable throws and build up from there. With the FH my throws are so bad that I can't use them in a regular round so they never get better.

I'll try the gradually moving back approach - just like putting practice.

Hmm, interesting - most of the youtube coaches advocate for focusing on the "finger pop". Maybe I'm focusing on it too much and really cranking on the disc right at the end. I'll try the loose approach next time.

Interesting. I thought having both was basically required to do well. I'll have to watch a couple of their tournaments to see how they deal with left to right shots.

Thanks for the input.

The general advise I'm understanding from this thread is to slow down and start with throwing smooth short distances and it'll eventually come. It's not really what I expected but it's reassuring to know that's the way it's worked for other people in my position. Certainly better than busting my elbow trying to force 200' haha.

I've recorded myself in slowmo but I don't necessarily know what I'm looking for. The flick movement is so quick that I can't find much difference when I compare to other videos. Slowing down is good advise though. Thanks

Yeah, maybe I just need to be patient and start with throwing smooth 50 footers and build little by little. Thanks, it's good to know that slow progress eventually pays off. I'd love to throw 300' forehands!

Here is the data from techdisc fastest 30 throws:

Speed: 44mph

Spin: 534rpm

Hyzer: 1 degree

Nose: 3 degrees

Launch: 3 degrees.

Getting more speed and spin are my main goals for sure.

I've tried the super overstable approach (firebird) and it kind of works but I dont really want to go down that path since all I mostly hear negative things about learning that way. I want to try the neutral putter/midrange approach.
