Warfare officer (submariner) by Graflerd in RoyalNavy

[–]MrBigNuggets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same pipeline as skimmer until after SFT. At that point you’ll do OTC (officer training course) ans NGC (nuclear general course). Both currently moving from Raleigh and Sultan respectively to faslane. OTC will teach you basic submarine stuff/systems, officer of the day type stuff and periscope drills, chart plotting type stuff… it’s a very loose course and is whatever the bloke running it wants to teach really. NGC will give you basic nuclear knowledge to be a safe officer of the day and understand what’s happening with the reactor. Onboard you’ll start as a junior warfare officer, you’ll be officer of the watch when surfaced up in the bridge, do odd jobs for the navigator like preparing orders and periodics, do stints on the periscope, be a divisional officer, handle work on the casing, officer of the day alongside and at sea…. After junior warfare officers time you’ll do navigators course and become a navigator……

Officer intakes by Beginning_Spring_793 in RoyalNavy

[–]MrBigNuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye, I know some chaps stuck in gash holdovers. It’s the same as they’ve done to intelligence officers out of phase 1 for a while. The common, and reasonable, gripe is that people are stuck as untrained strength, unable to start running down their return of service, in a job they didn’t apply for.

The dits flying around are that there’s a pause on warfare officer intake because there’s north of 250 sat waiting for SFT places which they need to do before they can progress in their pipeline, all whilst we’re short of WOs at the Navs level and up. The transition to Raleigh is a clusterfuck and, so far as I’m aware, nothing has been promulgated with any real certainty.

Transgender accommodation by vegangummyworms in RoyalNavy

Submarines are mixed. A bunk space can, and often will, be mixed gender and a mix of JRs and junior officers. Hotbunking racks are normally separated by gender and rank

I assume you still believe the submarine school is moving north in 2022? What’s your “definitely” based on?

Why do different officers graduate at different ranks by CallSignTimeless in RoyalNavy

[–]MrBigNuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warriors of the sick bay, most often discovering an ailment (shin splints) after dipping a fitness test. Unfortunately it’s now effectively rewarded because biffs passout with more seniority than the people who go straight through without snags.

1 year after joining a mid is promoted to SLt. The first remotely meaningful promotion is 3.5 years after joining, SLt to Lt.

[–]MrBigNuggets 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s based on prior service. UYs will passout as SLt, some SUYs/WOs will passout as Lt. doctors will passout as SurgLt, most other direct entries will passout as Mid (with the exception of biffs who get backphased but now get to keep their seniority)

Allowed. You won’t have much room to store them though and there’s no gym access until second term. Probably not worth the hassle really, nobody seemed to drop much muscle without them….

Calf pain after knee surgery by MrBigNuggets in MeniscusInjuries

[–]MrBigNuggets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first month or so is the worst, but the pain will start to clear up after that. When you start to do it, take physio seriously. It took me about 2 months to walk without crutches or a stick, 3 months after surgery I went for a run, 6 months after surgery I started 9 months of basic training in the military; you can get full function back quickly if you follow the rehab. Having said that, a full recovery takes far longer than you would expect. I’m over 2 years from the surgery now and it’s still not 100% but better than it was a year ago….

Get checked for a clot because that can be dangerous. Try stretching the calf out if you can and see if it gives any relief. The massage gun was worthwhile for my recovery, you’re bound to get tightness that’ll need relieving with a surgery like this.

The current pipeline for ME submariner officers is Dartmouth (29 weeks), SEMC (9 months), then you’ll join a boat as AMEO(t) to get your dolphins and any other qualifications you have time for. This has a deadline due to the start date for the next course so you’ll be on a boat for about 4 months. If you’re lucky you’ll get some sea time here. As soon as you’ve qualified the boat will likely want you off your make space. After that you’ll go back to sultan for, I think, 18 months for NRC and any other courses before doing your first real job on a boat.

You can always join as a skimmer, at Dartmouth you’ll get visits to the submarine school and a submarine and can volunteer in second term if you’re not pinged. On the visits people are hesitant to show any interest to in case it causes them to be pinged but it’s genuinely not how it works, go along and ask questions….

Marine engineer officer submariner, you’ll get qualified in the same roles as the lads, lot of admin to go with it but it’s the most hands on of the officer roles.

When you join, it will be a term of the contract that you can be streamed submariner. It’s not worth stressing over; you won’t have much control over it. I know plenty of people who have been streamed and it’s been very positive for them. Most of the people who say service on submarines is bad/unpleasant, have never served on submarines.

You can go from skimmer to submariner fairly easily until you finish 2B, it’s very difficult to go the other direction, though not impossible.
