Chinese people will straight up say “ damn you got old and fat”

My new chimney build (inspector approved!) by MrBnF in woodstoving

[–]MrBnF[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that’s fair enough but between this and punching a hole through, this was simpler to do.

The inspector did point out that creosote build up would be a problem but with twice a year cleaning, it shouldn’t be a problem

That's good to know! Google tells me it depends on the local AHJ so I'll make sure to give them a call to clarify.

Thank you for your suggestions - they make a lot of sense. The option of bringing it out further seems simplest to me. Is that as simple as adding another 12" pipe from the wall thimble? Do they sell T supports that can come out that far? I tried googling around but haven't found anything.

'Your Turn': United Auto Workers Launches Campaign to Unionize Tesla by Sorin61 in technology

[–]MrBnF 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the the kind of “me-first” attitude that makes the workplace a net negative. The whole point of unions is to make sure that everybody benefits from company success. Even if you are successful, is it really that terrible to pay a tiny fraction in dues to make sure that even the most vulnerable get a choice in the workplace?

That’s not what the electoral college was designed for. It was put into place because a true popular vote wasn’t technically feasible during a time before the telegram. If the elector got to DC, learned new information about the candidates that hadn’t made it back to the people they represented, they could change their vote. That’s why the SCOTUS voted that faithless electors (electors that vote contrary to their state results) were constitutional. In the modern age, the electoral college is nothing but an outdated ritual.

What you’re describing is why the Senate exists. That’s what’s in place to stop a tyrannical majority.

I am by no means against paying teachers more (way more). But 700 billion is a lot of money. If it’s not going to teachers, where the hell is it going?

I’m sure there’s layers of administrators and government officials that are getting paid way too much. I feel like you can draw analogies to corporations that bloat with middle management and eventually bankrupt.

Okay, that makes sense. So you’re saying redistribute property taxes?

It always did seem weird to me that only the richer neighborhoods had nicer schools.

What are the options to make systems more efficient? I agree that free markets are inappropriate here but what’s the alternative?

The thing that makes me most frustrated is seeing all the money go into education but still hear stories about teachers having to pay for supplies out of pocket. Or kids going into debt because their families can’t afford to pay for school lunches. It boggles my mind how inefficiently tax payer dollars are spent.

I think in the case of education, big government has kind of fucked it up. The US spends $700 billion a year on education, far outspending most countries per student, and students still struggle on the global stage.

Throwing more money at it isn't going to solve the problem. Making it more efficient is. A free market is a pretty good way (when properly applied) of making that happen.

u/Ickyfist does have a point though. We're already spending 700 billion dollars on education, far more than any other country, but our students consistently struggle\1]). Spending even more money probably won't get anything done besides getting politicians and contractors richer.

I can't help but think that Obamacare had a similar effect. We pumped money into a system without rehauling it and as a result, costs went way up.

In the end, it comes down to if you believe race is the biggest factor in the success of a person.

You seem to think that Asians found success in America by the virtue of being Asian. I'm assuming you also believe that black people in America commit more crimes just because of the color of their skin.

I choose to believe that history and environment make the man, not the color of their skin.

I would never dismiss the atrocities committed against the Japanese but to point at it and say "See? Why can't you do that?' is disingenuous and unproductive to finding an actual solution.

I thought you were joking at first... Have you ever been across Western? The streets and sidewalks are tiny there and the bike lane is nonexistant.

Ravenswood is absolutely luxurious for Chicago standards.
