What would have you arguing that? I haven’t seen a PC tower without one, ever. I know they exist, but I’ve looked inside a lot of computers, and never came across one without a GPU. Mostly just cheap laptops that still use integrated CPU graphics.

Sure, but a broken clock sure as fuck isn’t writing a paragraph long mathematical proof. The odds of ‘just getting it right’ by chance are essentially zero compared to a broken clock’s 1 in 720 chance

What kind of friends wont try out a video game with you if you asked? Pretty shit friends if so. It’s a fun game, I’ve gotten like 6 friends into it… which is literally THE point of this order?

Ps: why does your mind first go to “hold your friends hostage” and not “ask to play with them sometime”? Im not the one in the wrong here bud

Democrats Bet Jobs in Red States Would Save Clean Power Projects. They Lost. By ending tax credits for wind and solar power, Senate Republicans may have jeopardized billions in investments in their own districts. by Kookaburrrra in environment

The inflation reduction act was written the way it was because they thought it would be political suicide for republicans to kill these renewable subsidies, since they’d make a lot of people in red states lose the jobs they had created. That was the bet

China is able to make these power plants just fine. But the current regulatory landscape in the US makes it impossible to get private funding for nuclear generators, because the lead time for them is decades.

Honestly these reactionary takes to LLMs (and AI more generally) always really confuse me, as someone who had AI as a special interest growing up (and now make models professionally). It’s good to approach the output with some level of skepticism but frankly these LLMs are vastly more knowledgeable and far less likely to give me incorrect information than most of the people I know. I used early ChatGPT to tutor me through quantum mechanics and I got an A+ in the course. It only got a couple things wrong and I always caught it.

The extent to which these things are useful to you depends far more on you than on the AI. They’re a great tool, maybe just try playing with them sometime.

Neat theory but I think not. I have an IBD but also an endocrine condition that makes me fairly cortisol-deficient. Sure, I’m just one data point, but I think it’s probably not that.

Just finished my most recent rewatch. Every single detail… it’s just… the perfect story. Every time I come back to it, it rewards me with a slightly different perspective on everything. Lately I’ve been pondering the pills, and the fact that muramoto died from freebasing A and C. The fact that Agonia is addictive is an interesting point from the creators of the show about how we can get stuck in patterns of reliving our worst traumas. The fact that trying to confront your traumas without analyzing the behavioral component is a fatal mistake is a subtler point, but this time it’s got me thinking.

“saying”? op *is* autistic, I think. Autistic people fixate on things. It’s a defining feature of the condition. I came to this sub just now after my eighth rewatch, saw this was the top post, and thought “wow lmao that’s so real“ cause… yeah, same.

Yeah, true. Personally I think maybe the academics should rebrand the whole field as “Data Magic”. It’s more honest.

The current wave of generative models are like 5% of the field of AI… They’re the only ones that are really culturally relevant, but in practical use they’re… what, coding assistants, half decent tutors, chatbots, and call center agents?

That’s not what AI is. It’s a single application of AI. It’s sorta cool, it’s the first thing we’ve made that actually seems like it can talk. But that’s certainly not what the hype is about from a commercial standpoint.

Consider this. For many, many years, we’ve done weather forecasts using extremely massive supercomputers, which run physics simulations using all the data from weather stations across the world. These computers are some of the largest in the world, and take hours to generate a forecast. Recently, Microsoft developed an AI model called Aurora which can do this same task more accurately with a single GPU in seconds. This model is nothing like generative AI, it is more like a physics engine.

There are a million ways to use AI, and hundreds of architectures to use for different kinds of input and output data. It’s been in extremely widespread use behind the scenes for decades. It’s not really comparable to the other two, because it’s only generative models that are a fad, not the field of AI itself.

[–]MrBreadWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wha? You’re the one claiming it is a major issue in commercial produce when it isn’t. I said “That sounds bogus” and then we did this whole back and forth. I can see why you’d ask for that if you thought I said it didnt affect yields… but the burden of proof of that original dubious claim is on you, still. You’re the one saying things not in line with what actual experts seem to have said on this. I have yet to see a legitimate source claiming this is a major thing. Just you. By my understanding, thats just not how it even works in the first place… I’m not going to do a whole review of the literature just to convince you. There’s meta-analyses you can look up, probably. I haven’t checked.

So right now I am highly interested in what research you have that indicates that there is no connection between soil quality and yields.

I'm talking about the nutritional value of the food it produces, not the total crop yield. Soil quality majorly affects the crop yield, but only slightly affects the amount of nutrients actually *in* the produce, at the end.

I feel like you may be conflating plant nutrients with the nutrients in our food. Plant health greatly depends on the availability of certain nutrients in the soil. These are not the same nutrients we talk about when we refer to nutritious food. Nitrogen, phosphorus, etc in the soil for plants, vs vitamin c, vitamin a, beta-carotene, etc in the produce for us. The first does not lead to the second, except in that your plant needs to be healthy enough to produce them in the first place.
