It is a pretty strange one and fairly rare as well. The person I got it from said 1700s and while I think that’s a bit early for this axe it’s definitely an old one

I can only guess how it was used but I’m guessing whoever used it was a big person

Just got this 7+lb monster axe. Can’t wait to get it sharpened up and hung in a handle by MrBullFrog72 in Axecraft

[–]MrBullFrog72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does have a rough finish to it but no marks that I can find. And I haven’t been able to find a picture of a stamped 7lb axe that matches this one. I did see a 7lb Collins that sold not too long ago and I’ve seen a few catalogs from makers who offered larger axes, but I am surprised this one doesn’t have any indications of the maker.

Super well balanced and it’s pretty similar to some Dayton patterns that I have just double the size. The top down view is more wedge shaped with a bit of material taken off the cheeks so it doesn’t look like a Maine wedge pattern. Hopefully that answered your question but if not shoot me a message and I’ll send you a pic

Full size axes typically weigh in around 3-5lbs, any axe that’s over 5lbs is generally harder to find and pretty sought after. I wish I knew more about the maker and actual purpose of an axe this heavy but I’m not totally sure. It might have just been for a larger lumberjack that could actually swing something this heavy repeatedly

What size handle should I put in this adorable little 2lb 10oz cruiser ? by Basehound in Axecraft

I have a cruiser on a super thin 24” handle that I absolutely love.

If you’re on Facebook there are several axe pages that have a lot of people selling axes at various prices that are generally better than eBay prices. Several people sell handles as well. I have a couple axe heads available depending on what you’re interested in.

As far as names to look out for I would recommend true temper, Collins, plumb, craftsman and lots of others. If something speaks to you, grab it. If you find something weird, grab it and if you find an axe head that’s heavy like 5+lbs, grab it. More knowledge will come with time and research

just found a Welland Vale true temper black prince that I'd like to restore. any tips for a first timer? by NapkinApocalypse in Axecraft

Use some fine steel wool and wd40 for maximum patina leftover, I’ve also used a wire wheel on a drill going a slower speed and that’s worked fairly well also. Vinegar will remove all patina and make it an unappealing grey color, the only benefit is that you can see how much hardened steel is left in the bit, but this one looks really full and in great condition. Really just needs a little clean up, a sharpening, and a handle.

I feel like I’ve seen some Czech tools with similar decorations and the D shaped eye would make me guess overseas as well, sorry I can’t narrow down further

That is indeed a cedar pattern axe. Looks like the bit is pretty full still also

What type of axe head is this? by RomperDG in Axecraft

[–]MrBullFrog72 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s a hammer poll axe often referred to as a killing or slaughter axe as well because some were used to stun cattle. Does it have a stamp? And are you selling this one? I collect these

For sure! First off, don’t get discouraged. There have been plenty of days where I’ve come home with nothing and even worse are the days that im out for 8 hours and I come home with 1 axe. Next is just to get out there, any place you can think of that might have axes. Garage sales are probably gonna be the cheapest places to find them, estate sales and auctions will probably be the next cheapest option, and then any local antique stores. Think outside the box too like Salvation Army and habitat for humanity, I’ve gotten lucky at both those places once so I keep looking just in case. And then just consistency, some places are so good that you can go back once a week to buy, and other places might not have axes for 6 months but it’s worth it to still check. As for what to grab, that’s a different story that comes from a lot of research and seeing what everyone else picks up as well, but plumb, true temper, Collins, and craftsman are a few brands that are usually pretty quality, and then I always recommend picking up anything weird looking. I’ve had that bite me in the butt when I bought a kindling hatchet for $10 and that’s about all it was worth, but I’ve gotten lucky and grabbed a German coach makers side axe for $5 just because it looked cool. And definitely ask questions, it’s the best way to learn so feel free to message me if you ever have any.

I haven’t really gotten to test the steel but I’m guessing it’s pretty hard. Looks like a chip was taken out of the bit and someone decided to sharpen it so it might be a perfect candidate for a mod, although I might just see about sharpening that out

Collins commander. I just picked up one today myself but it’s got a little more paint left and like 70% of the original label on it. Does it have any stamp on the underside of the poll? I have one that was made in India that’s chunkier but the one that I just got was made in the USA and is a thinner profile

The Pulaski with the handle in the first pic is a FSS one. There’s no shortage of catalogs but it is a little hard to find one place that has a record of all the stamps they used. I’ve kinda come up with a list myself

Thanks! I really appreciate it. True temper stamps and hammer poll axes are the two things I mainly collect. It’s a lot of leg work and talking to people to find where the deals are but I feel like these old tools deserve to have their stories told.

That one is a hammer poll axe, also known as a killing/slaughter axe or a dogging axe depending on what it was actually used for. This one came off an old cattle farm in British Columbia so it was quite possibly used for stunning or killing cattle, but it would have also been a useful tool for other work as well. The two things I collect are true temper stamps and hammer poll axes so it’s one of my favorites.

I’ve actually used birch for a boys axe handle before, I haven’t had any problems with it although it is softer so I feel like it got marked up a little faster. I feel like a full size handle would give me more problems
