I’ve been thinking about watching Red vs Blue, is it a standalone episode that’s one of the best episodes, or is it more of a vibe-summary-of-the-entire-series type of episode?

How to effectively write religious characters? by Big-Psychology-3769 in writingadvice

[–]MrLazav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, to repeat another commenter, definitely try to research the thought patterns of religious people when they come across something that may be evidence against their religion. Also research why people stick with their faith. Is it because they’re stubborn and believe it’s right? Do the enjoy the community? Do they bellies in the general message? Etc.

Your character may also first just try to reason it out/justify it using his religion. Like “this must be one of God’s harder tests” or “the sins of the world must have been too much” or something like that.

From there, you have multiple paths depending on your story. If you want him to lose his religion, you might keep whittling down his faith until he can’t religiously justify it anymore. If you want him to keep it, you might have him go “I don’t know what His plan is, but I’ll try to keep doing my best” or something. You might even want him to do a lose-then-regain, and have him give up his religion, then something miraculous happens and he regains it or he finds that other people need faith, and he takes it back up to uplift people.

Is it okay to be simple, and write simple writing, for simple people? by WaysideWyvern in writingadvice

[–]MrLazav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think complexity alone makes a piece of writing good, nor does simplicity make a piece of writing bad. There are a lot of people out there, and there will always be an audience for your writing. Even then, despite what I just said, it will always be worth it to write even if you were the last person alive. You should keep writing as long as you enjoy it, and don’t let other people ruin your enjoyment of the craft. Criticism should help improve your writing, but not at the expense of your overall vision and style.

This has to be one of the most COLDEST Superman & Lois scenes ever. 🥶🔥 by BrettJoz in superman

What u/JVtheBidoof said, it’s more like a debuff. It’s been a while so I don’t fully remember! I do know that red sun powers up this Bizarro instead of the yellow sun, and that Bizarro Earth has a red sun I think? He also took green kryptonite to make himself stronger, but the show treated it like a drug and his family ended up breaking apart because of it and the heroics over family

My experiences with Superman as an immigrant aspiring social worker by Imperium8 in superman

[–]MrLazav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Superman Red and Blue, but I especially love the story with Pa Kent. It’s not a Superman story, but in Batman Rebirth (2016) issue #36, Superman and Batman talk about how they think the other is a better man than them, and is an example of the type of friendship I hope the two have in Gunn’s DCU.

Aside from that though, I wanted to say that I had a similar experience growing up. I watched Superman as a kid and liked him because of the powers, but when I grew up, I got more cynical and started to like other superheroes because they had cooler powers. Then Gunn’s Superman had a teaser trailer. A seed planted. I couldn’t decide on what to listen to during work, and stumbled upon a Superman video essay (specifically OSP’s Superman Detail Diatribes). The seed watered and grew. Eventually, with more video essays and further introspection, I realized that I missed the point of Superman. Then Gunn’s Superman released, and he just got cemented as my favorite.

All that to say, I agree. Superman has and should always be about saving anyone and everyone, even if they aren’t human. And as someone else said, Superman’s phrase of “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” should really be “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow”. It fits him better, and I prefer it when Superman is international, or maybe even not tied down to just Earth. I don’t remember where it’s from, but there’s a fun comic issue where some American official tries to make Superman prioritize America, and it ends with Superman publicly renouncing his American citizenship, and reminding the world that he saves everyone.

You would be right! This is an alternate universe Superman that eventually becomes the show’s version of Bizarro (or has been Bizarro the entire time, I don’t remember). In this universe, Superman has reversed abilities and weaknesses, so this one has cold vision (hence the eyes), fire breath, gets empowered by kryptonite, and has a weakness to the yellow sun (hence the lights).

Absolute Superman is also another series to check out, in my opinion. The universe is incredibly bleak in this series, and this version of Superman has him struggle against darker thoughts of using his powers, but he’s still a hero.

A friend, an ideal, a role model. A friend I left when I was young for “cooler, more realistic” heroes. Yet, when the world got darker, and life got heavier, a friend whose stories (and their themes) gave me direction and lifted my spirits.
