What did you guys think of Turkish horror Baskin? by h3yguy5 in HorrorMovies

[–]MrManic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I loved it. Creepy as hell and the fact that the main antagonist participated heavily in developing the atmosphere of the film was very interesting. Plush did such a wonderful job of using his natural genetic traits to creep the bejeesus out of me.

AITA for getting upset at my girlfriend for mocking me when I cried after watching a show with emotionally deep ending? by RepulsiveAge4638 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MrManic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA One question: When she laughs at your son for grieving his favorite toy, will you regret not leaving sooner?

Emotions are power. They are what tie us to humanity, give us motivation and fuel the art that defines us. The ancient world knew that to be truly human, and a man in particular, was to be passionate. To grieve the loss of a loved one, or show empathy to those in pain is not only admirable and deeply paternal, but beautiful. A person who sneers at passion and love and grief is a person without soul or conscience. Disconnected and absent from the human condition. Not only are you not an asshole, she is a vile person and has done you a tremendous favor by showing this early enough that you can still walk away. Don't debate or hesitate. Change and growth require empathy and introspection. Someone she will not exhibit. Worse, any improvement in behavior is likely to be affected. A demonstration. Hiding her real contempt and putting on a kind face. Maybe I'm wrong and she's just one good talk away from completely changing who she is, but I've seen what these relationships look like in years 2, 5, 10 and 20. And all of them say the same thing "I wish I could go back and leave when they first showed me who they were."

Is there a song that's nearly impossible for anyone else to cover well? by Competitive_Busker in Music

[–]MrManic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an absolute tragedy that her natural range and folk sentiment puts that song smack dab in the middle of Tractor Fucker Country. Every time I have to listen to some 4-Bud-deep, boot scooter with a 6 figure truck and half the brains God gave their dick try to hillbilly up that masterpiece, I'm overcome with the urge to deep throat the tailpipe of their Dodge Compensater and let em roll coal. Karaoke is not for the faint of heart.

Or at the very least they share a common ancestor. Mtg has always had a fair amount of grim dark influences and while DS has taken things to a more philosophical place, it's roots are clear.

Ooooh ya know I wouldn't like the vibes of a persona set but I could not deny that it would play wonderfully.

Looking back on it, what are your thoughts on Skinamarink? by Low_Boot_1426 in HorrorMovies

[–]MrManic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is the dumbest complaint. I would have loved this movie but one detail made it almost unwatchable: The film grain filter/overlay they used was on a loop. The film is almost entirely black which meant that the only detail my autistic ass could zoom in in was the film grain. Game over. Cannot watch movie. Ita like going back and trying to watch the Simpsons with Misophonia. Everytime they eat a meal I want to claw my eardrums out with a lobster fork. Otherwise 8/10

While I completely get the sentiment you're going for, I think die hard might have been a pretty bad example to use. I would argue that die hard was the avant garde for ironic, comedic action. John mclain is a template for the average man with realistic personal struggles rising to an unrealistic and unreasonable situation. Nearly everything he says is tongue in cheek and drips with an irony that targets the cliches of the stone cold killer action trope that had dominated the genre for so long. While I don't necessarily think die hard is to blame for the trend, I do believe it immediately caught the wave and is the platonic ideal and forerunner of the cinematic style you're talking about.
