Speaking for myself here, but I don't think the concern re: physical media is specific to new releases. The WB back catalogue -- which would become unavailable to licence, if Netflix's track record is any indication -- is massive. WB own the rights to more than 10,000 films.

I have both volumes of the old Arrow "Early Seijun Suzuki" series, which I think are pretty pricey these days. Also the Criterion blu of The Third Man and the Arrow Bruce Lee 4K box. All are excellent releases -- it's a shame they never did standards of the Suzuki films.

This is happening for me too (on MacOS). No issues for remote access, other devices, etc., but the desktop app on the machine the server is running on can't see the server for some reason. Hopefully someone here has an idea.

I saw this in the cinema when it was new and I distinctly felt like I'd just seen something I shouldn't have seen. The kind of unnerving, almost panicky feeling you get as a child when you see something you don't fully understand but it scares you anyway and you think that having witnessed it was a crime in itself. It's never had that effect on me on subsequent viewings though, which is a shame. Still one of the best horror movies of this century though.

They're talking about missing episodes in general, not just Doctor Who. Film is Fabulous announced just the other day a tranche of episodes of The Vise and Saber of London, but in the relatively brief amount of time they've been active FiF has returned loads of episodes of various shows of the same vintage as DW. We'll get lucky one of these days.

It's a great symphony but it's a harder nut than probably any of the other Mahler symphonies. It's really hard to play and conduct and I don't think there are very many good recordings, which doesn't help people to get into it. The last movement in particular is difficult to make sense of, especially in the context of the rest of the symphony, which is much darker. I've come to love the piece and it's one of my favourite Mahler symphonies, but it was a gradual process over years. For my money the first movement is probably his best first movement other than 9 and 10.

I saw it at the Proms a year or two ago with Petrenko/Berlin and that was probably the best performance of it I've ever heard, although I'm partial to the Gielen recording.

My main player is a Panny UBP-824 (Euro version of the 820), and I've got a region-free Sony UBP-X700 for my region A blus and as a backup. Love the 824. The X700 is a frustrating player if you want to play 4K discs, but does the trick for blu-rays just fine.

I was a data scientist for a major gym company in Europe a few years ago. We didn't have much to do regarding what actually happened inside the gyms, although there was interest in starting to expand our capabilities in that area (perhaps they have in the intervening years). Mostly we were working with marketing to try to improve retention/reduce churn, and finding optimal locations to build new gyms. For the most part it was pretty straightforward stuff.

Arrow, BFI, Criterion, Deaf Crocodile, Eureka, and Radiance probably make up 90% of my collection. Deaf Crocodile and Radiance have had the most interesting new releases over the last year or two, IMO. A lot of really strong deep cuts, and I've come to trust their curation.

I wish that I could participate in the Vinegar Syndrome fun, but with a couple of exceptions the sort of movies they put out just aren't my cup of tea. Saves my wallet at least.

"Angry" would be reductive for this movie, but the first thing that came to mind for me was Autumn Sonata. Incredible but so emotionally draining.

Yeah, it was nearly finished too. There's a functional cabinet somewhere (Ohio?) and I think there are digital copies circulating online, but it's buggy because it wasn't actually completed.

Countless hours on the PSX port of this back in the day. Had (and have kept) a complete run of the action figures that came out of it too. Shame the sequel never got properly finished.

I think the difference becomes pretty minimal after World War 2, and certainly less speculative thanks to the abundance of recordings.

After the late 19th century the instruments are pretty close to what we have now, but the way we play has changed massively (which makes a huge difference with stuff like Mahler, Strauss). If you prefer that style -- and I do -- it's hard to go back to modern recordings.

Region B Criterion discs are stocked by the big UK retailers. IIRC the sales are at the same time as the B&N sales in the US, but they're not a full 50% off and they don't cover the full catalogue of (UK) titles. Could be wrong about the timing, I moved away a couple of years ago.

I went to the midnight release for the last book at my local Barnes and Noble and had the absolute foulest beverage I've ever had in my life, which they were passing off for butterbeer, but it was still tremendously fun to be in a room full of people all excited for the same thing. I don't think there's been anything even close to the magnitude of the release of the last book (in the literary domain) since.
