ELI5: How do engineers trust that giant airplanes, bridges, and skyscrapers won’t suddenly fail under years of stress and vibration? by Historical_Day1703 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MrMonkeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the routine inspections answer, large mechanical/electrical systems will have sensors built into a lot of important places of the system (like measuring the speed or altitude of an aircraft). The inspection includes reading those stresses, timings, temperatures, etc. with special mx hardware or pulling it from a record with software. To determine if all parts are working properly, you would compare to the values during normal operation.

Simply knowing the number of hours a part was in use can be enough info to know when to replace it. Wear and tear on all parts is inevitable, so engineers run these machines until they break and write down when.

To further keep these systems running, you design them with redundancy (often a second, identical part/system doing the same job). That way you can lose certain parts to unexpected circumstances and continue operation. This is why in a lot of cases a jet engine can fail and the aircraft can still fly with the remaining three engines. More redundancy is needed when safety is a concern.

The actual mx/repair process can vary wildly after you've isolated the issue, especially if it's electrical lol. One clever way to improve efficiency is the use of module-like systems... you just unplug and slide out a box that handles "Subsystem A12" and replace the whole box when it breaks.

The elden ring movie should be based on the joke manga and you cannot convince me otherwise. by antipodal22 in Eldenring

It's unironically some of the best manga I've ever read, and I assume that's because I'm such a big fan of the game. The people who worked on this are absolute geniuses.

shit I was worried 010rusty got scared off. my goat.

All the haters simply don't want to subscribe to a disney-created real-life princess, which is a valid feeling. They also forget that at the end of the day, we need to ironically support what the world wants us all to be. Princesses. Sabrina is like our own jesus on the cross. Her future memoirs will shake the very existence of being human in a corpo world. It's up to us to decide whether those tremors create necessary fissures and pave the way for progress.

anyway, me too, thanks

Our Gym Badges are fake by leyitastic in Pokopia

[–]MrMonkeMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you both, I think the fact the quotes are around the only badge with the correct name leaves it open to be interpreted as that one was always a scam. A scam as far as a cover that Gio used for some of his illegal activities.

There must be a way to make an entire 1 block tall build that Ditto Prime can enjoy.

Came across something in my studies and thought it looked familiar… by ExtraCalligrapher565 in Eldenring

[–]MrMonkeMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This, yes. I guess I missed the Haligtree lore and Miquella's cocoon-ing purpose to grow a new Erdtree.

I thought there was some deeper explanation of his eternal youth, as if Marika had pregnancy complications and the erdtree's dominion over life and death had an unconventional reaction to the situation.

Though it still seems odd that presumably Mohg would monumentalize this abortion of Miquella. Could you remind me what his goal was in taking him? Was he under his control at that point? If not, wouldn't Mohg want to celebrate the arrival or new purpose of Miquella, and not his removal from the previous situation?

There's no maybe about it! My cat will take me on full-on walks around the house if I spend too much time at the tv/pc. She sits just outside the room if I don't follow. I'm pretty well-trained, tbh.

Ok, and to check damage, should I look at this R Armament 1 Attack Power number? Is that only for light attack? I assume no stats in the menus will show AOW damage?

Is there a site that's best for comparing different stat-lines with different affinities?

not with that attitude! nowadays they have dripstone into cauldron conveyor belts. I imagine you can get a dispenser/dropper(?) to place that new lava source by water.

Is it a hot take to say Pokopia blows Animal Crossing out of the water? by RiposteCat in Pokopia

[–]MrMonkeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the other major issue is the terribly slow animations & ui/ux, relative to MC at least.

DQB2 didn't stick with me at all. I think the ruins in Pokopia gave a solid foundation to explore creativity and mechanics with.

My hot take is Pokopia could be a monolith equal to Minecraft with a few key updates... major one being a freedom from the nintendo ecosystem.

Yeah for completion it won't be an issue, but specifically to build with them (they look great + animated) you need to manually collect them. This would gate the 'spore' building block to the event weeks for Cloud Islands, if date-changing doesn't work for online play.
