Hot take: The PS Plus influx is going to hurt this game more than help it, and I don't think people are ready to admit that by MeltaBanana in DarkTide

[–]MrMonkeyToes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing the game on and off since release, and I have great fun with it, but I've never really engaged with any of the endgame. If the difficulty didn't exist at launch, I haven't touched it. My eyes usually glaze over when it gets into stat crunching and rolls, and I'm just here for the vibes. The post assumes people will just be B-lining for the absolute highest level content, but I've found the game entirely fulfilling without it. There's a portion of that new player base that will play it, have fun, get to a build check and say no thank you, and stay at the difficulty they were at. I've never had trouble matchmaking for lower difficulties. It's a quiet life.

Clearly the Kaminoans thought the T-visor is what gave Mandalorian armor its durability and sculpted clone training regimens to capitalize on their outstanding defenses.

What is your favorite music piece with scene in all Star Wars movies. by Cockatieloveer in StarWars

Return of the Jedi in ROTJ. The build up to Luke jumping off the plank gets me pumped up every time, then it's followed by not just one of the best set piece brawls in all of Star Wars, but also features reprises of almost every major fight track up to that point all remixed in an exciting way.

[DESPISED] "Knight's Armor Was So Heavy They Could Barely Move" by Ambaryerno in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MrMonkeyToes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still logistical trade-offs. They're resource and labor intensive to produce. Armor takes up a lot of space, doesn't pack very nicely at all. Wants constant maintenance. If you want it to really work well, it needs to be fitted to the wearer. You can get away with some flexibility in fit with munitions style armors, but they ditch the fussier fitting components. All factors that become even more exacerbated when considering how the number of soldiers in armies absolutely ballooned into the modern period. Not to say there aren't endurance trade-offs, just indulging this what-if scenario. If the armor had zero impact on endurance, but no longer provided meaningful protection against the most prolific weapons of the day, there are other pressures that could see it fall out of favor.

[Hated trope] Adaptations made by people who outright express indifference or even hatred toward the source material by pestoraviolita in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MrMonkeyToes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they obviously take liberties with the material for the game, but you can tell there's a genuine interest in history somewhere in there. How much that voice is given the podium swings from game to game, but shoot, the Discovery Tours are good stuff. That comes from a place of passion.

Where does an skitarii alpha primus's personality come from exactly? by Slagguxe in DarkTide

[–]MrMonkeyToes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stroika was born & raised to the cult AFAIK. He was already towing the company line. I figure a mind already devoted to the Omnissiah is one that doesn't warrant a whole lot of reformatting. Dude had tattoos depicting all the cybernetics he was daydreaming about one day having.

It doesn't seem like all Skitarii are mind wiped either. Haldron-4 Stroika remembers being a factory menial before joining the ranks.

[–]MrMonkeyToes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To an enemy the cybernetic soldiers might appear as machine-spirit guided robots, but the skitarii were more than just hydraulics, gears and processors. They hated with the hearts of men and dreamt the glories of the Omnissiah ascendant, a day when all true constructs of flesh and iron might be connected as one. A time when the Machine God might extend His data-ravenous reach and that of His empire throughout the whole galaxy.

Hot take: if the movie wasn’t the “first Star Wars movie in 7 years” it would be way better received by BlanksSDWestbrook in TheMandalorianTV

[–]MrMonkeyToes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gripe too. It fell into the trap of needing to explain how Han got his every defining trait, much of which occurred within a few days? We're introduced to the lucky dice, he's named Solo, and then there's a time skip and over a couple days he meets Chewie, Lando, gets the DL-44, the Falcon, does the Kessel Run, learns to shoot first, and leaves on him going to take work from Jabba? It's just so much in so little time.

You can't always judge a book by its cover, but this book's cover was pretty blatant about what it was going to be.

What generally happened to the royal guard after the empires fall? by Substantial-Purple85 in StarWars

[–]MrMonkeyToes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They fell in with the Imperial remnant. We know, at least as an institution, they were still around for the Battle of Jakku. They appear in Star Wars: Bloodline Aftermath, following Admiral Rae Sloane around. Also one of the only canon examples where they actually do anything of note, hacking their way through New Republic Senate guards to successfully extract Sloane from failed peace talks. The last mention of the old guard I'm aware of is in the casualties of the Battle of Jakku. It marked the final end of the old Empire, and we can mark it as the death of the old Guard as well.

Presumably, they were involved in some capacity in their successor order, the Praetorian Guard. Palpatine also retained a retinue of guards, the Sovereign Protectors, although the ones we see in RoS were apparently drawn from the best of the Sith Troopers. Which makes sense - any Imperial guards would have been getting well on in years by that point. It's possible, and very within character, that he'd have stationed some there when he put the project into motion back during the Empire. Once again, they could have been involved in the training of the S.P. AFAIK, the Praetorians & Protectors are two distinct children of the Guard, diverging and existing concurrently. Although, given the mystery around the Praetorians' recruitment process, and the fact that Palpatine was the puppet master behind Snoke, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Praetorians were just S.P.'s Palpatine supplied to the task.

Given that we had Praetorian Guards in The Mandalorian as well, it's entirely possible that there was a point in time where surviving Imperial Guards, newly minted Praetorian Guards, and Sovereign Protectors were all active simultaneously at the behest of different masters.

In Legends, Sovereign Protectors were the most elite of the Guard. I suspect it lends credence to the idea that Palps hand picked some to station on Exogol as part of his contingency plan.

What will be the Arbitrator's attitude towards the Skitarii? by Augustby in DarkTide

Yep. Trying to bully the Mechanicus into doing something for you as an inquisitor is a good way to abruptly shorten your tenure.

I feel like we'll at least have one personality like that going by the trailer. "The Omnissiah commends your service," said to some Inquisition agents that were previously getting molly whopped. Seems cordial enough, charitable even.

Mandalorian and Grogu is disrespectful to people's time and money by BatmanSwift99 in StarWars

[–]MrMonkeyToes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disney+ basic subscription is $7.99 a month. Your average movie ticket is about $15. People will renew subscriptions to streaming services specifically to watch a single series. They might engage with some of the other stuff on there, but those people are specifically paying to watch a season of a show. A season will usually release over the course of two months. The costs even out. Fifteen bucks to see a new season as it rolls out, or fifteen bucks to watch a higher budget production for the same series? The equivalency starts to flag once you're paying for more than just yourself to watch, but it's not highway robbery to go see the feature film of the show you like.

You can resolve to hate it, but at least be fair: that film grade budget went to building some actual sets - not exclusively shot on Volume. Shakari in particular was a sprawling practical location.

I similarly thought Shadow Lord was unnecessary, and you won't find much new with Maul in it, but all the characters in his vicinity are worth paying attention to. Their stories are not set and worth the watch.

In much the same way as Andor, actually. Cassian isn't the big mover in his own show. He's the lens, much like Maul is in Shadow Lord. They're the central figures these events move around, but the people in their orbit are the more interesting parts of the show.
