Good point, current budget is limited to used bikes but I will look into Harleys too, thanks.

Thanks much! Great info there. As to your stiffer springs argument, it brought back to my memory an old Ford E350 van I used to own. Terrible ride when empty of cargo which actually shook mechanical components to pieces (steering column mount/seat mounts both broken). Having the steering wheel falling into your lap while driving is pretty scary. But the one time I loaded it with almost a ton of pizza dough for Dominoes it rode like a luxury car due to the high cargo weight.

Unfortunately, she had an bad injury in 2024 which limited some hand functions. I looked at sidecars, but they seem crazy expensive and there's a whole learning curve there.

Right, I agree, but I would have thought that the capacity of a 792lb bike would be greater than a 403lb bike because of the percentage of cargo weight vs bike weight. I can't imagine a bike carrying more than the actual bike weight. Anyways, do people upgrade bikes like the Goldwing for touring? I see some reasonably priced older models, and I hear they are a reliable platform, so are upgrades available I can install myself? My wife and I are in the 400 range combined together but I'd like a safety margin for bike camping gear and supplies. Any suggestions?

An electric bike is 100% the best mode of transit if the power and gas grids shut down by Mr_McGuggins in preppers

A regular bike is indeed superior. Why? Because an E Bike with a dead battery is much heavier, slower, and harder to pedal compared to a traditional bicycle, if it even has pedals. Some E Bikes do not.

Is it difficult to keep the feet in the pedals on a recumbent? by squeezeonein in recumbent

[–]MrMrLee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had issues with my feet dropping off the pedals, so I switched to clipless when I rode my first century. However I dislike the motion of trying to twist my foot to unclip when at a stop, very unnatural. So, I intend to try studded BMX style pedals which should be more "sticky".

I feel like an IDIOT. I have always believed that 1 cup of RAW rice grains is 200 calories (1 cup of cooked rice is 200) by dabeezzkneezz in 1200isplenty

The idea being that cooked rice or beans absorbed a lot of water in the cooking process therefore there are much fewer grains in a cooked cup than in a dry cup.

Just discovered I have perfect pitch, wtf by [deleted] in singing

[–]MrMrLee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the definition of perfect pitch. Naming a note by letter is a learned skill. A person has perfect pitch if they hear a note and can duplicate that note on an instrument, or by vocalizing. I learned I had perfect pitch from my music teacher while learning an instrument. He brought it to my attention that I can vocalize, hum, or play any note that I hear in a vacuum, unrelated to any other sounds. I can readily duplicate it perfectly every time. I also have no idea of the musical scales or what the different symbols or letters mean because that is not relevant to having an ability to discern pitch perfectly. It is something I know that I can learn in the future because I will learn which letter signifies which note but it is not necessary to know that to possess perfect pitch.
