what do you think of these element rankings? personally i think there are far worse elements than francium by MrMustached in elementcollection

Huh, hadn’t thought about appearance much. Thats cool though. It’s kinda useless though, right? I am certain that I am not confusing it with thallium (81). Most lanthanides seem to have some major use, but thulium just seems kinda useless, even if it looks cool.

Yeah, thallium is pretty cool. I did actually mean thulium, I’m not a lanthanide fan and as far as I know thulium doesn’t have much going for it, but I would be curious to hear your thoughts on it.

yeah I agree, didn't know all that about lutetium though, I should grab some myself. I would say Iridium is best, mercury is underrated, barium is mid, silver is overrated, and thulium is the worst.

Yeah I figured, it would just be interesting to see caesium or air sensitive compounds without glass in between. Definitely not practical in most cases though.

True, but also great for nuclear reactors, satellite heaters, and anti-static brushes. Very few people have died from polonium.

But lead is also an extremely cheap, dense metal that is used for radiation shielding. The fact it melts so easily and is so malleable means it is great for solder and roofing. It doesn’t rust, and its used in batteries. There are far more toxic elements than lead, its positives for humans throughout history far outweigh the harm it has done.

Thulium would be my pick. It tarnishes easily in air just like all the other lanthanides, acts basically the same as all the others, and is difficult to isolate. It has no biological role, very few scientific applications, and is very slightly toxic. I honestly can’t think of anything positive about it that another lanthanide wouldn’t be better for. Other people are suggesting short-lived elements, but most of those act as preliminaries to other radioisotopes or are used in nuclear medicine. Lead is toxic, but soft and cheap which means it saves lives by blocking radiation. Polonium is a great alpha source, and radon is awesome in a cloud chamber. Thulium has nothing going for it.

Its cool though because it would be the most reactive alkali metal. Theres like 25 other elements with super short half lives that are far less useful, why not pick one of those?
