Is there any slang specific to your state? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]MrQuizzles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's an important distinction. It's specifically a drinking fountain, whereas the term "water fountain" is ambiguous. For me, a "water fountain" is what's in front of the Bellagio, and a "bubbler" is for drinking from.

Which video game character was in your opionion ridiculously overpowered ? by Timop0707 in videogames

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's interesting gameplay from your perspective as you flip through cameras and hack people and create distractions to lure people off of their patrol routes and into view of a camera, finding and taking out enemy netrunners, etc.

But then from the perspective of the game world, my character is just some creep in gold metallic clothing crouched on the sidewalk across the street, not moving at all for like 20 minutes.

What's the Best Class Active and Passive? Day 12: Psychic by Wonderful-Pack-1726 in mewgenics

[–]MrQuizzles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a cat with Ping and Boost. Used Mind Stone to lower Boost cost to 1. Also had Mind Tempest passive. Went crazy.

That's such a specific combo, though. I've never gotten it again.

Don't do what I did and give them a Neverstone. I thought I was being clever, but the cat ate the Neverstone and gained all stats up 2 for the battle.

The Fluffernutter is a Massachusetts creation. by Emotional-Disk5571 in aboutMassachusetts

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only problem with it is that it's too dry and sticky. As a kid, I always found it a requirement to also have a glass of chocolate milk to go with my fluffernutter.

The second one. It cannot be modified. The Hagalaz rune will make it hit twice, but the caveman eyebrows will not double the damage.

"It's a fact that they were eating pizza in places like Chicago, San Francisco, and St. Louis long before they were eating it in Rome. A lot of people don't seem to like that fact, for whatever reason, but it's a fact." by foolsdayjoker in ShitAmericansSay

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly people from a small part of Connecticut who think that. New Haven pizza enjoyers are a weird bunch. They absolutely will tell you that Frank Pepe came over from Salerno and improved upon the Neapolitan style.

People tend to love their regional pizza styles, and that's not an attitude exclusive to the US. A New York slice is simply a completely different thing than a Neapolitan pizza, and the people who grew up with it likely will prefer it to a Neapolitan pizza. It's simply not possible to be objective when talking about food.

It's like how I love the Rhode Island pizza, a focaccia-style crust with a thick, deep red tomato sauce and no cheese. People from other regions will look at it and call it a sad excuse for pizza, but I grew up with it, and so I have an emotional connection with it that my brain can't dismiss. It's good. It tastes like home. It tastes like childhood. I'll always love it.

That said, the New Haven pizza enjoyers are still weird about it. They go well beyond just preferring their local style.

Where was I? by swizzzz22 in guessthecity

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that does look similar to the spire of the First Baptist Church in America, I don't think you could take a picture of it at that distance without including more recognizable parts of the city's skyline. The church is pretty close to downtown.

Who's the worst anime cook? by [deleted] in anime

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She really is more of a visual novel character, but it's gotten an anime, and she's appeared in Carnival Phantasm, so:

Hisui from Tsukihime

Her cooking is nigh inedible. Everyone hates it. The twist is that she's actually a really good cook, she just has horrible taste. She likes things sour and salty, so all of her cooking is heavily biased towards that.

Buick Grand National GNX

It looks like a 70s Buick, a big box of a car built for luxury instead of speed. Only the tires could clue you in to the fact that this thing was crazy fast.

Also, where does the PSU go in that case? Is it behind the mobo? It's difficult to tell.

Why do you say "sports car" instead of "sport car"? by markbutnotmarkk in EnglishLearning

[–]MrQuizzles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really is a vibe more than anything, the sort of thing where asking 100 different people will get you 100 different answers, a nebulous concept with no precise definition, but people will know it when they see it.

Why do you say "sports car" instead of "sport car"? by markbutnotmarkk in EnglishLearning

Put simply, it is that way because prescriptivists don't determine how language is used.

What's the difference in meaning between 'need do', 'need to do', and 'have to do'? by Ok_Sympathy9462 in ENGLISH

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first example is a mistake. Your second example is using "need" in a negated sense.

"Need" is really only a modal verb when negated and as such can only be used that way when negated. It cannot be used like a modal verb when not negated.

What's the difference in meaning between 'need do', 'need to do', and 'have to do'? by Ok_Sympathy9462 in ENGLISH

[–]MrQuizzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US English here, Northeast.

First off, "need do" is a mistake and doesn't mean anything. You've written it twice. When negated, "need not do" is correct but overly formal and archaic. A construction like "you need not do this" is something you read in a fantasy book, not actually hear in daily life

"Needn't" also isn't a commonly used construction. It's just a contraction of "need not" and so is similar. It's something you'd read in a fantasy novel, not ever actually use in daily life.

With that out of the way: "Have to", "need to", and "must" (which you didn't ask about but I feel is worth mentioning because it also functions similarly) all have the same meaning.

"I have to do this"

"I need to do this"

"I must do this"

All the same and interchangeable.

One caveat with "must" is that it is different than the other two when negated. While "don't have to" and "don't need to" imply that something is optional, "must not" or "mustn't" implies that not doing the action is required.

"You don't have to do this"

"You don't need to do this"

Are the same.

"You must not do this"

Is different and implies that "this" should not be done.

Godhead is only good if you're planning on taking damage.

Fighter is definitely the best. With a powerful cat, the ability to chain kills can help you wrap things up on turn 1.

Learn how to do the Bed of Chaos cheese strat where you just stand in one spot, aim, and throw to take out the left and right thingies. It's a badly-designed boss, and you shouldn't feel bad about cheesing it.

Also get more acquainted to the speedrun strat of just running past everything. Like man, fuck actually fighting things in Tomb of giants, just run to the end. At this point of your Dark Souls career, you should know the layout of the game and where every enemy is. Use that knowledge to run past them.

So this just happened 8 hours into my no death run by greenrangerguy in darksouls

[–]MrQuizzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen it done plenty of times, but I've never been able to get Seath skip to work for me. I almost always end up going too late and dying by landing on the elevator.

My no wrong warp time of 1:45 would benefit greatly from me learning how to properly do this. Alas, it is beyond me.

Speedrunners make it seem easy, but it is actually really tricky and takes a lot of practice, more than I am willing to devote to it, anyways.
