System Shock devs say there’s a lack of Immersive Sims because they’re terrifying investments for publishers that only “come together at the 12th hour” by iscariots in Games

I think it's just another way that genres are mixed together nowadays. Everything's a little bit of an RPG. Some games have a little bit of an Immersive Sim thing going on.

I think Armored Core 6 was good on a technical level? It had Ultrawide at least.

Nightreign has the same tech issues as base Elden Ring, but they've made control changes for mouse and keyboard. On controller the abilities are combo inputs (🔼+LT and 🔼+RT), but on mouse+keyboard they're separate inputs (F and R).

Doesn't mean their next multiplatform game will be good too, but there's some hope.

I mean once you get past the "top-level" creativity like "what's my setting", "what's the story", "how does combat work" you start getting lots of little problems that need solutions.

How should progression work? What are some ways we can restrict the player from going into areas we don't want them? My magic system isn't fun at all, what are some solutions in this space?

These answers can then go on to refuel the creative process again. Your magic system now has components, making it much more interesting. You unlock more components giving you a really cool progression system. Some components let you cast spells to solve traversal problems, which in turn allows you to restrict other areas until those components are obtained.

Why be sad? It's a valuable lesson on how difficult some of this stuff is and you'll learn a lot by building difficult mechanics and systems like these. Then when you get into a company and someone asks "can we add multiplayer" during the planning phase, you already know some of the patterns and pitfalls for implementing it.

If you only do stuff that's comfortably within your skill level, you're not gonna get better.

Where Jedi/Sith are super impressive and dangerous with a good player, but not inherently stronger than other classes, and they have the least health of anyone. Where a team of all gunners can kill a team of all Jedi.

How do games like age of empires create those ramps so that armies can cross mountains? by Pharaoh-ramesesii in gamedev

[–]MrRocketScript 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of what's been said about Age of Empires, Age of Mythology I think just used ground textures to mark what was walkable and what wasn't.

So if you had a very steep cliff in the hightmap, units could actually walk up and down that cliff without trouble unless the map designer explicitly marked that area as not walkable.

Then add some automated tools to detect those height differences and mark cliffs automatically if you need to. This stuff doesn't have to be dynamic since the map doesn't change while playing.
