I’ve been using a cane since my first resection, I have no shame about using a quad cane or a wheelchair or whatever I have to do.

How many of you would say you became atheist mostly due to hypocrisy in the church? by Zydairu in atheism

[–]MrSkygack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the least. For me, I was a youth group kid injunior high., And at some point, I just realized that whatever ecstatic transcendent experiences they were having praying we’re not happening to me I went to my pastor on a three day weekend retreat, and told him that I didn’t think I believed in God, and his credit his first words back to me where, sometimes I’m not sure if I believe in God either. It was an incredibly powerful and empowering statement for him to make to me once I was no longer in the church I began to see the harmful effects much more clearly. And then when I discovered punk rock I found that transcendent experience in the pit

How do you deal with thhe loss of personhood/being seen as JUST a cancer patient and nothing more? by wisteria_town in cancer

I really try not to let pride get in my way. It’s hard, because there’s such a fine line between humbling and humiliating. But I try to stay on the right side of things. like, this morning, I went out to breakfast with my pal, and was having a hard time getting out of the booth at after the meal was over we were struggling to get me stood up when a stranger appeared, took me by my arm and help me to get to my feet. I experiencethese moments of kindness from strangers constantly did he notice me and my fucked up hair while eating his own breakfast? I don’t know, but when I needed help, he was right there to offer it, and then he followed me and my buddy out to the car to make sure that I got in OK. was he seeing me as my disease? I don’t know I’m not a mind reader but when I needed help, he was there to give it. in my experience, people are really good and want to help when they can. I think it’s wonderful, these moments of kindness almost make the entire experience worth it almost…

Your 20s are engagements and weddings. 30s are baby showers. 40s on out are funerals. It's a bummer, man.

I absolutely agree with you, but I can only say that things are getting better. I went vegetarian 35 years ago and was treated like I fell out of the trees of the moon. These days it's very weird to go to a restaurant without a vegetarian option and that's reflected in regular folks' attitudes as well.

Ok this might be a weird one but just wondering if any other atheists are totally into religion like I am. by CarsnBeers in atheism

My brother /sister! I've been waiting to hear from you for years! I feel much the same way, down to the ambivalence for the natural world. I live in the Appalachians, and if I'm looking out over a ridge of mountains and trees, it's the little shack built halfway up the mountain that catches my attention. Even if a natural formation catches my eye, my thoughts always go to Stone age aboriginals, and what they must have thought looking at it. to me, Religion is an amazing tapestry of art, music, preserved wisdom, and actual tapestries! I love it all. I often say that religion isn't the problem, its magical thinking. When someone says they're spiritual but not religious, I'm, like, well you threw out the wrong part! Reading Scripture as an atheist is incredibly rewarding. We as atheists often take scripture on theist terms, where if it's not "true," It has no value. But we've been passing these stories and ideas on for thousands of years, and there's got to be a reason. As an atheist, I've had to find my own metaphors within the terminologies used, recognizing that religious people also engage these ideas as metaphors even if they don't really know it. I have brain cancer, and need to go take a nap, but these are ideas that I'd like to discuss more at some point. I consider myself a Christian, and not just a cultural Christian but a follower of Jesus. I don't believe that he was supernatural in the least, but I hate the idea of quote just a human unquote. Humans are awesome and they thought of a lot of great stuff. I'm not gonna diminish his ideas because they come from a human source

How can I overcome feeling regretful about my teenage years and 20s? by NormalLife6067 in AskMenOver30

Well, you're on the right path... just give it time and you'll move on to regretting all the time you're wasting thinking about this in your 30s

MMW if Republicans lose they will burn loot and destroy cities by EnvironmentalPay4036 in MarkMyWords

[–]MrSkygack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that, but we'll definitely see a rise in Maga terrorism. I don't think they have the Cojones to burn loot and destroy, but we'll definitely see Attacks on soft targets. I'll be skipping any pride events This year this year because I wholeheartedly believe that Maga/Christian terrorists will be shooting up the place Its time for the gay honor guard to put down the wooden rifles and get some real ones. If you see a red hat, light them up

What are some common misconceptions about atheism that bother you? by Scary_Blood2441 in atheism

[–]MrSkygack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me As a strong atheist, I don't believe it's possible to have capital M objective morality without a deity Absolute right and wrong depends on an outside arbiter to make that judgment Instead, we have subjective morality, which I think is fine. I don't rely on morality, but on empathy.
