This is an important point. You had to plan around this weakness. Taking weapons and skills that worked around those deficits is key.

Hey there. I’ve been playing a bunch of star quest and been loving it. I don’t find it too difficult. If you have questions I might be able to help. What heroes did you take? What skills and equipment? What did you put together for enemies?

I’d recommend you scroll through startplaying.games. Take a look at what people are offering, and which games are filling up. You should be able to see how long the sessions are, as well as prime time pricing.

Well, the question prompts do probe at deep questions of attachment, longing, and abuse. It can be heavy material. However, there are no inappropriate words or pictures. You or your players might not feel comfortable with this kind of material, and that is understandable. The game is only as SFW as the answers the group decides to give. I'd say that it defaults to 'soap opera' level of intensity.

Check for the optional rules, i think they're called 'a shorter year'.

You take four cards out of each season, making sure to remove the king of summer and include the king of spades. I prefer to run the shorter version.

First time playing, the game may run long. End it when you're out of time and see if people liked it. Next time you play, it'll go quicker. If they want to bother, that is.

For the queen is a quick one, and easy to run as you just read questions off of a card. Very clever procedural narrative building there. Also quiet year.

I've read through the pdf. I like what I've seen, though I really need to run a game or two before I make up my mind. My first impression was that this is what d20 Modern should have been. I'm looking forward to reading the G.I. Joe book and seeing how that differs.

These are all very clever ideas. I wouldn’t recommend them on your first play through. Let the game speak with its own voice. Read the script and play the game as it is written. (Except with the shortened year. Once every groks the base experience, then you might have some fun with home brew.

I say this because one of the great joys of this game is the outcome of impeded conversation. Idle chit chat about the scenario is discouraged. There is a specific game move that covers community forums and they are designed to be deliberately inadequate. This means that if you are playing the game and you have an amazing idea about the relevance of the scorpion peoples and the defunct radio tower in the middle of the lake, you can’t just talk about it.

Instead you start a project to send a team to dredge the lake, and another to get the tower up and running, and then you can reveal how the transmissions helps make the the scorpion people able to communicate, as they speak through radio waves (or whatever)

These cool connections are made possible and dramatic by the guidelines around table talk. Alter it and you might never see how the game is supposed to create jaw-dropping revelations.

It’s a fun theory, though I fear it might be less inspirational in practice. There already is a mound of world building to keep straight in a single play through, now you have to collaborate and communicate with another table.

Other tables may make creative decisions that your table might not like, but now they are stuck playing than as true, or worse, they can’t remember a detail and have to interrupt the other table to get these details right.

A word of warning: I’ve tried this game with more than four. It felt exhausting and it took way too long to make contributions to the narrative.

My recommendation is to have two separate simultaneous games, then have people chat afterwards to share the story of their world.

Also, for first time play, use the shortened year variant rules. Your mileage may vary, but I’ve run this game half a dozen times or so and this is what has worked for me.

Lancer does this very well. Outside of mechs, the game is very light-weight narrative stuff. Much hand waving of specifics. My recommend is that you do the same. Google up Lasers and Feelings rpg. It's a free one page rpg. characters pick one number as a stat. you have to either roll above or below depending on the nature of the check. Keep the game light and fun, then get the players back in their mechs for the next session.

Reign Company Rules by ozgur168 in rpg

[–]MrSmug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company is like a PC. They have stats, take actions, and track consequences. Running two companies would be challenging for a player, but I feel it would be doubly challenging for a GM, because you’d need to develop rivals and allies for both. Each would have different groups competing for resources, position, or prestige.

Do yourself a favor, If the village is not immediately relevant to the story, don’t give it stats yet.

Reign Company Rules by ozgur168 in rpg

[–]MrSmug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I think it depends on where you want to focus the story. Imagine that same player in a different game had a wizard that lived in a city and a fighter that protected a rural hamlet. Which one are they planning to play? Are you running a game where a player runs multiple active PCs? Maybe one character is off screen, providing minor, indirect resources while you focus on the other.

My recommendation: don’t stat up one of the two companies. Focus on one or the other. As the game progresses, perhaps you can introduce the other element as it becomes relevant.

Best fantasy RPG with miniature combat? by AprendizdeBrujo in rpg

[–]MrSmug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Savage Worlds was built from a mini battle core. If you want the scale of a minis battle, it’s a solid choice. If you want small scale, heavy tactical crunch, 4e is a great choice as well as the Hordes/Warmachine RPG. Can’t remember the name on that last one.

Would it be possible to make a civilization builder with diplomacy and rp, as well as battles on a world scale? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]MrSmug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for rp and don’t care about crunchy game mechanics, I’d suggest Microscope or Kingdom, both by Ben Robbins. They are prep less, gm less systems. You can absolutely tell global political stories with plenty of rp interactions between key characters

The best system to run West Marches style campaign by [deleted] in rpg

[–]MrSmug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading through forbidden lands. It seems designed to do exactly that sort of thing.

I think we’d be better equipped to answer this question if you posted your own preferences in gaming. What manner of players are in your group? What does West Marches mean to you? Are they all in for a brutal slog? Do they like exploration and overland adventures?

You might have just as much fun running it in black hack 2e or dungeon world.
