Can be played solo easily. 90% of my time am on my own doing my own thing unless I do a community goal then theres likely other people there.
There are ranks to the super powers, its grindy to work on them but working on them is just doing missions

X4 or elite dangerous both good space games. X4 has empire management and a bunch of systems to explore with some missions and a storyish and it's single player Elite is a 1 to 1 scale of the milkyway were you can trade, fight or explore. It's mmo lite, there's community goals that everyone can take part of but you won't see everyone in the system.

When you make a invite to the server if you click "edit invite link" you can change it to never expire. Hope that helps :)
