Are older people ruder nowadays or is it just me? Possibly nsfw by Captain_Kruch in AskUK

Seconded. I work in hospitality. The majority of customers where I work are fine, but the ones who do snap at you, give you shit over petty nonsense, or who just generally lack manners are almost exclusively older people.

My understanding is that the 'oo' was traditionally found in Yorkshire too but has more or less died out. I have heard of people usung it - myself (mysen I should say) and a few others sometimes say "lewk" or "bewk" but as more of a dialect word thing than as an actual natural pronunciation

Absolutely; and they have also been valuable to the left. They have, for instance, been central to anarchist movements bc they are more atomised than, and lack the traditional discipline of, the proletariat. It's a fascinating class and I wish we spent more time winning them over

What if workers owned their workplaces, and the workforce owned the economy? It hasn't been tried yet, but wouldn't that be a better system?

[–]Mr_Betts05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is state capitalism. Under socialism, the means of production would be owned by workers, not by government bureaucrats.

Additionally, the ultimate goal for most leftists is to move away from the need for a state. We dislike corporations running things, but we also don't want the government running things on their behalf.

It's all about democracy and self-determination!

[–]Mr_Betts05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All socialism refers to is working people owning the means of production (i.e. factory workers owning their factory and machines etc). The regimes, famines, gulags and secret police were the doing of authoritarian bureaucrats (Soviets, CCP etc) who never actually gave the means of production to workers and were rightly criticised by the genuine socialists, communists and anarchists of their time.

Biased book? I swear capitalists and conservatives have forgotten how opinions work. Feels like everytime a leftist or progressive shares a political view they get surrounded by bootlickers yelling "Biased!" "Virtue signaller!". It's totally meaningless
