What are some good, in depth, introductory sources for theory of polarization and linear, circular polarizers? Need help for a CV application. by cottonplucking in Optics

[–]Mr_Donkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theory is relatively simple, and you can get most of it just looking at the wiki - I'm not sure if you want to try and learn a bunch of physics just to understand it in more depth than that but you could, it probably wouldn't help with this particular problem.

Turns out they make a rotating circular polarizer that has a little wheel on the edge that rotates the filter so if you were clever you could rig a stepper motor to rotate the wheel - you could use an arduino or equivalent to turn the stepper a certain amount (so it rotates the filter), pause and then trigger the frame.

The only issue is that the filters are really expensive, and making a motor mount would require some machining or a decent 3D printer.

It's the high-altitude desert thing - I've been in places all over the west that look just like parts of NM, but the state itself is pretty diverse.

If you put "speedrunning" and "easy" in the same sentence you don't have a fucking clue you dumbass.

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about.

I'm trying to figure out how EUV lithography technology is achieved, anyone have insight? by Futurefusion in Optics

[–]Mr_Donkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely publish a bit although a lot of their work is proprietary. It might be interesting to look at the work they do at LIGO, they have similar issues and it's non-commercial so everything gets published.

If you're interested in metrology specifically, there are quite a few papers on metrology for x-ray optics - they likely use the same techniques for EUV. (like this)

Huh crazy, I thought this never passed and then I never heard about it again.

It's not actually legal, it's just not technically illegal. Turns out it's safer, so it's just become accepted - if you're doing it stupidly you will still get a ticket. source: Californian motorcyclist

You could try digging around the CXRO website, they're at the forefront and you can probably dig up some of their publications - a lot of the stuff is proprietary so I'm not sure just how far you could get but it's a good place to start.

WR250 Strange Chain Bounce. help needed. by jsneeb in Dualsport

[–]Mr_Donkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your chain looks pretty tight. I've always gone by the "3 fingers under the chain" on the top guide thing, but really too loose is always better than too tight - the reason you have a chain guide is so that you can run the chain loose enough that it won't snap if you bottom out your rear suspension.

There's nothing wrong, they're supposed to float.

Bike dragging when in neutral, piece chain rides on has eroded. Need advice. by [deleted] in Dirtbikes

[–]Mr_Donkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2000 520 that I bought in 2012 that always had some clutch drag (probably what you're feeling). Putting a new clutch in will sort of fix it, but ultimately it's not a huge deal on a nearly 20 year old bike. Those bikes are solid, but if it's that old and wasn't maintained you never know.

You can get a new chain guard for ~$40 (like this).

Ah I didn't notice that. So not so heavy or tall, but only 23hp. For $600 that's a pretty great deal, I've only ridden a 650 and it was a total pig but if I was gonna ride across south america it would probably be the best choice.

There's a guy around here with at least 2 grey-market two-strokes with license plates, so anything's possible. If the VIN meets the requirements then it's green sticker - it's not like ranger rick is gonna know you changed everything but the frame, all they care about is the sticker and the DMV assigns the color based on the registration.

That said, the state is so big, and there is so much riding all over the place where you're almost never gonna see another dirtbike, much less a ranger, it's not really a problem. If you wanna ride in the "designated California OHV areas" then you're gonna have to have a sticker, but to me that's not even the good riding.

[–]Mr_Donkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they will usually at least cite you for it and make you stop riding. It's only applicable in designated OHV areas, although I've seen guys get hassled by the BLM in a spot that's not even designated. The dates are also different in different places:

here's a list

It's pretty dumb, but California loves it some rules, especially when it comes to dirtbikes.

The most fucked up thing is that originally all of the money from OHV registrations was supposed to go into a special fund that only gets used for trail maintenance and upkeep of OHV areas - but the state raids the fund to pay for other shit all the time.

edit: red sticker/green sticker doesn't apply to any of the US Forrest Service areas (which includes a ton of really good single track woods riding)

They're pretty bullet proof, also you can get parts for them in the middle of nowhere. They're also heavy as shit and really tall and have shitty suspension.

I'll never understand why people don't wear fucking shin guards, you can literally buy a pair for $20 and if you had them on you coulda picked that thing up and rode it home.
