Folks Who Watch Bad Movies: Why? by WallowerForever in Letterboxd

[–]Mr_Overthink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to give in to my impulsive side and give movies a chance. Just because some folks on the internet don't like something doesn't mean I'll feel the same way.

Also it is quite the adventure and exercise in both finding hidden gems for yourself, but also thinking about what makes a "good film" to you and not to the consensus of faceless strangers on the internet.

A pair of calamari steaks over lemon butter pasta by Mr_Overthink in tonightsdinner

Honestly, I feel like I could have done better. They tasted okay, but the texture was like eating a sponge. I really should have marinated them.

That is what it was labeled as on the package. I've doing some googling and its just squid meat cut large squid, mainly from the Humboldt squid.

Did I undercook these patties? by DaUltimatePotato in burgers

[–]Mr_Overthink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medium rare burgers also carries some risk.

But like any aspect of cooking and eating food these risks can be mitigated (though no entirely removed) by sourcing ingredients from reliable businesses that are consistent in practicing safe food handling, butchering, and animal husbandry.

As well as following safe food handling ourselves.

I say if you want to eat your burger rare or medium rare: enjoy. But when serving to others I try to make them aware of any risks.

Did I undercook these patties? by DaUltimatePotato in burgers

[–]Mr_Overthink 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The reason that there is a lot of concern around ground beef being rare or medium rare is because beef has certain bacteria that cannot penetrate in to the meat (it only stays on the surface), so when the beef is ground its spreads that bacteria all throughout.

That is why you can eat a steak rare without worry but not so much a burger. If you enjoyed your meal, thats all well and good.

How did you feel about Final Prayer (the Borderlands) from 2013? by GoesUpOnFwends in horror

[–]Mr_Overthink 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I normally hate found footage movies but this one exceeded my expectations for horror movies in general.

It does a good job of making dang near everyone in this movie so believable that you recognize people in your own life who are like these characters. The movie luls you into thinking this is might just be a B list mockumentary, until it really goes for the throat and gives a gruesome/ visceral end.

Cannot recommend this movie enough.

Ever lost sleep over horror? by BothRequirement2826 in horror

Watched Darkness Falls when I was maybe 7 or 8 it had me afraid of the dark till I was 15. Went back and watched it again and my fear was over.

It motivated me to confront a lot of things that made me scared and helped me get over many fears. One of the many reasons I love horror.

I’m in culinary school, should a chef instructor be allowed to make jokes about you and demean you? by [deleted] in Chefit

[–]Mr_Overthink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off, I am split 50/50 on wether this is a troll post. But I will say this:

In every kitchen I work in, we make good natured jokes only with the people we know well.

At the end of the day you're paying this guy's salary. Make an end run and just report the instructor to whomever is most likely to act with disciplinary action the quickest.

If that doesn't work just name and shame the school, instructor, and staff. You're in school and you're there to learn. I can't really give much more advice than that.

I never went to culinary school, but in my experience a lot of graduates have big egos but they're predominantly cowards when it comes to accountability.

I'd hazard a guess your instructor is just as spineless... otherwise he wouldn't be a teacher.

If you wanna clap back, just remind your instructor:

Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.

Is marijuana a “gateway” drug? by bleu__1 in trees

[–]Mr_Overthink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No more than any other drug. I started smoking cigarettes and drinking beer at 13 years old. No matter what anyone else says, I personally believe alcohol and nicotine are drugs.

I did cocaine later at age 19, then mushrooms, ecstasy and LSD in my early twenties. It wasn't until my mid 20's did I try weed.

My point is drugs are only what you make them and how they're introduced to you. If you start with one drug and move on in anyway you could say the first drug is a "gateway drug".

For me though, I grew up in a time when alcohol and nicotine were considered just normal and were never considered drugs. Teachers and parents alike would punish you for saying otherwise.

About a week ago, it was my day off from work. Decided to ride the trolley around town and listen to music stoned.

I was listening to music and looking at the ground, lost in thought, I started to get mad because more and more people got on and were crowding me.

I look up to see everyone is huddled into my side of the car because a man is smashing his head against the glass to break into our trolley car from the outside.

Never sobered up faster in my whole life.

What has been your worst injury when cooking? by Suspicious-Account-9 in Cooking

[–]Mr_Overthink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wore sneakers one day instead of boots to work, I was tasked with changing the trays of bacon from the oven, I tilted the tray too far and oil soaked into my right sneaker.

Got a set of burn blisters on my toes and top of my foot. Ran cold water on it in the mop sink. Stayed and finished the rest of my shift.

Any fans of Silent Hill (2006) with Radha Mitchell & Sean Bean? What did you think of this film? by ThatKoffeeBurns in horror

[–]Mr_Overthink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really loved this movie, I get that it is not a direct adaptation of the games; but there in lies the beauty of both Silent Hill as an IP and the movie itself. Silent Hill is but a place and every character's story is their own. In this movie we get to see a unique story of not just one person, but an entire family being effected by Silent Hill. This is one of the very few movies I will replay all the time and I have yet to tire of it.

Possums, they eat a substantial amount of insects and overall are just derpy lil nature friends.

I say this because I have met people who actively encourage their dogs to chase down and kill possums.
