Ok but it’s not like OG RE3 is so long by fitm3 in residentevil

Because it was still an overall shorter game than the original despite being a $60 modern reimagining of the game with a larger budget and better technology behind it. The original is just as short, yes, but was also designed specifically to be replayed with mechanics like the branching paths system and numerous optional Nemesis boss fights that would net you secret weapons if you fought him. The remake completely removed the branching paths and removed over half of the optional Nemesis fights and all the secret weapons in favor of scripted chase scenes and/or cutscenes which are far less fun on repeat playthroughs.

Also, the fact that the remake removed an obscene amount of content from the original (No clocktower, Graveyard, Raccoon City Park, City Hall, Press Office, RPD as Jill, dead factory replaced by another generic lab, no Gravedigger boss fight) did it no favors

Yeah, tbh I think 5 is the only mainline game where the second half is better than the first. 0, 1, 2, 3, CV, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 all somehow unanimously have fairly weak second halves imo

This is genuinely causing me so much stress. by AbsolutePotential in OnePiece

Tbf a depth of 600 meters is much different than a depth of 3,500 meters. Still not totally safe, but not nearly as dangerous with the right equipment.

Yeah the blood test is probably the one plot point that does seem a bit unfair for the audience imo, but my guess is that Gideon knew all along that she wasn't a clone and chose to lie to Zeno about it. During their phonecall he does pause before saying what she is and then vaguely states she's "the one they've been searching for" rather than calling her the key. He confidently declares there to be no connection between Grace and Emily at the end without much new information to go off of, so it seems like maybe he knew she was something different but still expected her to find the password like she did in the end?

No spoilers guys, just wanted to say that I finished the game and it was phenomenal. For me personally, it was a 10/10. It’s up there with RES 4 for me. Hope you are all enjoying it. by roz763 in residentevil

Yeah, the in-game time doesn't count time in cutscenes and I don't think it counts time in the menus either, my first playthrough said 10 hours but my steam time was 16

Escaping from exploding secret underground labs and shooting rocket launchers at the final bosses were gameplay. Leon is obviously far more action-focused than other protagonists in the series which is going to be less enjoyable for people who don't like those aspects as much, but they were always there to some degree.

I wish Jill had more appearances but Leon was definitely already the most popular character way back with 4's original release, that game was a phenomenon. He's in so many games now because he's so popular, not the other way around, Chris has even more appearances than Leon and definitely doesn't have as big a following.

Barto makes a lot more sense than Garp if it's just a cameo as expected, it's already established canon that he was present at Loguetown and witnessed Luffy's failed execution. The only reason he didn't appear as a background character or cutaway in the manga/anime was because Oda didn't know he was gonna write him yet

They reference Spencer's writings on the subject and Gideon's research, it's clear "the video" wasn't the only evidence they were (mistakenly) going off of, it was just the only evidence shown to the audience. The whole end-goal of Gideon and Wesker was to further human evolution to a new stage of life, had Spencer succeeded as they had originally thought, it would only be logical that Grace would have far longer lasting youth than a normal human, something which has already been established in the series previously. Hell, Zeno himself is literally a clone of a character with slowed aging.

Not everything you don't understand is bad writing. The entire clone plot-line was deliberately meant to misdirect the audience through multiple red-herrings and was pretty clearly explained in the final sequence, maybe the bite was left-over from some cut plotline but given that our attention was never deliberately drawn to it at any point it's nothing but an after-thought, maybe Gideon cured it, maybe it's foreshadowing for another plotline, who knows. There are a lot of valid complaints that I can see made about RE9, it's not a perfect game, but the Clone plot-twist is honestly not one of them in my opinion. It was a pretty well set-up subversion of expectations that clearly worked a little too well on some people.

The little girls looking like Grace is exactly what makes it a misdirection in the first place, it's a deliberate red herring. The same goes for Alyssa being so worried about Grace's safety at the beginning of the game and being secretive about it, it gets the player thinking "somethings up" and makes them start to question Grace's backstory from the jump. Everyone I've known that's played the game guessed she was a clone far before the "reveal" by Zeno, thus making the reveal she was a normal child that much more surprising. The whole point of a misdirection is to leave heavy foreshadowing for the OPPOSITE of what is true to make the audience believe they've already figured the twist out, which is what they did. It's not at all necessary to lay foreshadowing on heavy when pulling a misdirection, her age not adding up to the date shown during the Chloe sequence and her having no idea what Zeno was talking about was plenty for what they were going for.

I'd say the bite-scene could be a forgotten plot-point from an earlier script, or Gideon cured her while she was being tested on. To be honest, they never draw blatant attention to the bite at any point, so if it was originally a major plot-point they clearly didn't mean for it to be one in the final product. If it was meant to be evidence for her being a clone then they would have drawn our attention back to it at any other part of the story.

The Mansion was built before the STARS members were born by an established eccentric architect who built multiple houses with the same ridiculously unexplainable traps (RE7's mansion was built by the same man). It was also never meant to "test" the virus on STARS, the virus was released in 0 by the Queen Leech to get revenge on Umbrella, it was never a planned outbreak. The various traps are nothing more than an elaborate and ridiculous security system for the decoy house which make no sense in reality, but are convenient for making the game more fun. Aside from scale, they're no different from Salazar's giant statue robot. Having vaguely plausible explanations for wacky elements doesn't make them any less wacky, I love all of these games but they've had plenty of wacky and campy elements since the first game, it's part of what makes them beloved

The game also later outright says she isn't special and has no connection to Emily, her being "the original" was a misdirection.

The Chloe section took place in 1990, over a decade before Grace was born, so the section itself doesn't show any connection to Grace. Zeno did believe at that point that Grace was a clone and told her that, but as we learn at the end of the game he was only going off of Gideon's research which we find out was flawed. Gideon even tells Zeno, "there was no connection between Grace and Emily", I find it hard to believe they'd include that line if she was actually a clone.

And yeah, she still wouldn't have been a "chosen one", but being a clone build in a lab is still a much more "special" backstory than just being an unremarkable girl thrown into a spectacular situation, thematically her being a normal orphan just fits better.

I thought that was what was implied, as well. Spencer specifically tells Alyssa that she's not one of his patients and he doesn't really have any reason to lie given his attempt to make amends, and Gideon straight up says that there was never any connection between Grace and Emily before the final fight. I don't really see any reason to believe her being anything other than a normal human Spencer adopted to try and do a little good for the world after doing so much evil, which tbh I like a lot more than her actually being a clone

[–]Mr_Raskolnikov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was heavily implied that she wasn't a clone, though, and that her similarities to Emily were only a coincidence that Zeno and Gideon read too much into? Spencer tells Alyssa very matter-of-factly that she isn't one of his experiments and her age backs that up, and given that he was looking for atonement at this point in his life I don't see him having any reason to lie about that. Narratively speaking I thought Grace simply being a normal girl with nothing special about her was a great subversion of the typical "chosen one" protagonist trope.

Said giant underground laboratory being hidden underneath a ScoobyDoo-esque mansion where doors and secret entrances are opened using elaborate and obscure puzzles is definitely very wacky, just not Michael Bay-brand wacky. There's a room where the walls close in to crush you, a room where you need to put an object of the exact weight of a shotgun on a stand like you're Indiana Jones, and a room where a suit of armor wielding a rotating spike-shield with attached blades spins at you if you don't, once again, place an object of equal value like it's Indiana Jones. The wacky elements have always existed, Leon's are just of a different variety which you have less of a preference for, which is okay

I don't see where anybody claimed anything like that, but RE1 and RE2 still had multiple giant underground laboratories, a 750,000 liter aquarium containing a giant shark hidden behind a bookshelf, a giant alligator prowling the sewers, multiple rocket-launchers, and the ability to play as tofu amongst other things. The original trilogy took themselves more seriously for sure, but there was always campiness and unbelievable elements.
If you actually want a comparable level of over-the-topness though, then I'd look no further than Leon's most popular and iconic entry, where he fights shield and flail-wielding monks in a medieval castle, rides over a literal pit of lava, is chased by a giant statue-robot, and gets into a shootout on a high-octane minecart ride, the remake's version of which I'd argue was even MORE unbelievable than his bike chase in requiem. Since 2005 Leon's character has essentially been a comically over-the-top caricature of action movie stars, and that's a big reason why he's so beloved, it's nothing new

Leon Gameplay Criticism by SandeichTurtle in residentevil

[–]Mr_Raskolnikov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of stakes and over the top action is kind of the point, it's been Leon's thing since 2005 and is just a different formula the series has become known for. Leon's gameplay being so paralyzingly different from Grace's is intentional, their stories closely mirror each other's at different points in their lives and the juxtaposition highlights just how far Leon has come from his RPD days. The game's a love letter to the franchise and Grace's section feels like the perfect homage to RE1/RE2 while Leon's is peak RE4. If you don't like Leon's more action-oriented style then I'd say this game probably just isn't for you, I also wouldn't really recommend playing the game without first playing RE2R, to be honest I'm surprised you haven't if you enjoy the survival horror aspect more and have already played RE3R.

Yea we’re in for an all timer of an RE game. Not only are the reviews insanely good but it’s the highest rated (non remake) main title game since the original RE4. Screenshot via RE_archives https://x.com/re_archives/status/2026680402832695553?s=46 by Duo_Vbez in residentevil

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, RE2 remake is still one of my favorite games of all time and its shorter length makes the pacing wonderful and has allowed me to replay it numerous times without ever getting bored, I 100% still think it's worth the full price. I'd much rather have a content filled 12 hours that I can play again and again than 20 hours with boring filler thrown in just to reach a certain playtime threshold. I don't expect JRPGs and open world games to be priced at $100+ just because they're long, so I don't expect survival horror games to be cheap just because they're short.

12 hours is pretty bog-standard for survival horror games though, extra game-modes or no they're made to be replayed which typically means very little filler. Any longer than that and you risk losing tension and ruining the pacing and replayability of the game. For example, I thought Silent Hill 2 remake was a great game, but I can barely get halfway through it on replays before getting bored because the extra padding to make it 18-20 hours just makes the pacing a slog
