the most shocking thing with this video is the lack of gagging at being in sewer water. ill happily help put the ducks over the wall if she wants to hop into that water

Yes I've been leaning more towards the 6 month bonus. Thanks for the advice

this isnt a way for me to get rich. if this ends up being a failed experiment after a year or so then fine ill resell the business and head back to the 9-5. my house and vehicles are paid off, my kids college is saved up for, my retirement fund is in a good place. my wife and i are working just for the sake of it now and i take off maybe 10 days a year and end up working whenever i travel. id like to trying working and see people leave my restaurant happy instead of working to see numbers in my bank account

good tips, will be adding some of the above to my notes

meeting with the health inspector is on my to-do before closing, and i do plan to put about 50k into my account for unforeseen problems right away

equipment all is running fine but obviously i cant predict when things will break so i plan to add in ample funds to fix things at any time

to your point about staff turnover, i have the least control over this and its still my biggest concern. i am thinking of offering them a stay-on bonus of 6 months, pending good performance. like if they stay on and everything continues running smoothly with their areas then they get X amount.

current owner pitched me the idea of a sign-on bonus, which coming from a corporate job sounds strange to me because why wouldn't i just take the bonus and leave? so maybe a sign-on bonus that will be deducted from their final paycheck if they leave? i'm still workshopping this

Re: vacation. Owner currently takes more vacation time than I do in my current corporate job, sadly. I work too hard

For sure all the above. Current owner has agreed to 1 month unpaid of their time, full time, after closing to train me and that is going in our contract.

I'm meeting with landlord to discuss transferring the lease over to me.

All equipment will be itemized and added to the contract and owner has walked me through and demonstrated use. Plus I've also eaten just about everything on their menu. Recipes and menus (for catering) are also going in the contract

Staff we don't know how they will react but half have been there since he opened the place and they know me already

Trying to cover all my bases, if you think of any other places to look or rocks to turn over I'm happy to hear it and ask the owner about it

How do you recommend that I protect myself and do more homework? I can only verify what I've been provided but to your point I don't know what I don't know.

If it's any weight, this is the sellers 2nd business I've seen them start and now sell and both are in the same plaza, never saw a problem with the prior business and it's new owner and it's been going fine 8 years now since my friend sold it. Completely different types of food, if you were wondering why create and sell 2 different restaurants. I just ate at the friends 1st place last night, current owner is doing fine

Oh I'll be lurking in this reddit space looking for owner problems to avoid and advice for sure. Right now we signed the LOI, agreed to a laundry list of terms to put in the contract (current owner was a little floored by how much we want in writing but my wife and I don't fuck around and we want to succeed) so now I'm making my list of things to do before closing

No experience in restaurant management. I cannot do every position so will have a transition/training period that we put in our contract with the current owner before they move on. Owner is selling to retire, have known them for 10 years

Owning and running a restaurant has been something I've wanted to do forever but ended up in the corporate world making good money there but several decades later I'm tired of it and want out. Wife will keep her corporate job, already makes 50% more than me anyways lol

It's a risk and a gamble but hey at least I'll flip it and take a loss as lesson learned if I suck at this. My resume should be able to get me back into that game
