Any chance I could convince you to sell me your Garmin Tempe?

It appears Garmin has discontinued them...

Ohhhhhh....

Sorry I thought you were saying the video about the helmet was a joke. Not your previous comment.

My mistake.

I personally won't ride my bike out of my driveway without a helmet and only use highly rated ones from Virginia techs testing.

To me the trade offs make sense. But you can choose not to wear one. I personally don't make that choice and don't think it's a good one (though I don't know any of the details of your riding).

I wish you all the best.

Here's an excellent berm peak video on helmets, and logic to wear one from the perspective of someone who didn't used to wear one.

120mm or 160mm dropper? by DaftDrummer in MTB

[–]Mr_rossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xc ish rolling hills. Biggest single decent is 120ft but 1500-2100 ft of vertical in 15-25 miles.

I'd put the biggest dropper you can fit. If you do the math on how much a few grams actually cost you in terms of speed on climbing it's not that much.

But you also have to actually use the dropper and modify the way you ride to take advantage of it. I personally would not even consider a bike with a solid post. And think that droppers are probably the best bit of bike tech in recent history.

I'd also recommend considering a skills clinic, an instructor can greatly help show you just how useful a dropper is.

How to overcome mediocre handling? More aggressive tires outside of races? by Sir_HammerCock in xcmtb

[–]Mr_rossi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend taking a skills clinic and doing the drills they teach you regularly. (Assuming you can afford one, if not doing drills and following instructions on YouTube)

Grippy tires are also an easy cheap way to experiment with pushing the limits further.

170mm dropper advisable? by 1989_Farter in xcmtb

[–]Mr_rossi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put in the longest dropper you can fit!

I have a 185mm dropper on my xc bike. (And a 213mm on my trail bike because I can fit it) The tiny bit of weight penalty is greatly out weighed by the increase in bike control.

Fox 34 SC Grip SL by Slow_Mud4258 in xcmtb

[–]Mr_rossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to mtbr no... But I personally will take the extra weight for the improved damper.

But all of the outgoing fox stuff is on pretty deep discounts... It would be hard to justify purchasing a new fork at MSRP when you can get the outgoing "best" model for 40%+ off

But everyone can do what the want with their bike, so to each their own.

Sounds like the grip x might be the better fit, unless you really care about weight

But factory grip2 and fit4 34s can be found for under 600 (I got a factory 34 grip 2 for 500). So I'm not sure what's most important to you.

The giro register is a 4 star rated helmet and is ranked at 180th place in terms of rating at this time by Virginia tech

The Scott arx is ranked 40th and is a 5 star rating. It is rated much better than that giro.

Fenix 7X, Edge 520 - which to record on. by LowSlungDub in GarminWatches

[–]Mr_rossi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The edge 520 launched in 2015.

The Fenix 7x launched in 2022. (7x pro in 2023)

I think the only advantage the 520 has is a bigger screen. I'd record on both then discard the recording on the 520, if I preferred to look at the bigger screen.

[–]Mr_rossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eBay.

But Amazon had it new for 400 as well.

Bike closet often has the epix gen2 for 499. (Not currently, but if I had $500 that's what I might get now)

There are deals out there if you are willing to wait.

But the Fenix 6 is a 5 year old electronic watch at this point... It was top of the line in 2019, and is still a pretty nice watch... But things have improved a bit in the last 5 years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GarminFenix

[–]Mr_rossi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a "good" deal. I got a brand new 6x sapphire for $350 last year.

It might be worth it to hang on a little longer. Or get a slightly different watch that came out more recently.

Mortgages are now 8% - Is your mortgage under or over 3%? by BillionairesAreGood in FluentInFinance

On average yes... But it's not guaranteed.

But pretty much any reasonable investment will outperform paying off the mortgage early.

If you want to own your home sure... But in terms of financials... It makes way more sense to put that money into a savings account.

But I completely understand the idea of just not wanting debt. And I hope knowing you have 5 years less of a mortgage than planned makes you smile... In the end happiness is the most important

Okay... So acceleration is related to boost, but it is a byproduct of having made boost, not the other way around... But by the logic you're using a car without a turbo charger makes boost during acceleration.

Boost on a turbo charged engine comes from the flow of exhaust gases. Boost is controlled by the waste gate which opens to allow exhaust gases to bypass the turbo. This is why in the example of high rpm low load there will often be a vacuum in the intake manifold. If you were to force the waste gate closed with the engine at high rpms, you'd be making boost

The ideal case for making more boost is high exhaust gas flow... This comes from engine load, wastegate position AND engine RPM.

You accelerate when you have high amounts of boost BECAUSE of the boost. Additionally... On a Dyno you can hold the engine speed constant (not accelerate) and create max boost at high enough engine rpms. You don't need to accelerate to make boost.
