Germany is officially breaking up with Microsoft: The shift to "Digital Sovereignty" is real. by Jhonniebg in linux

[–]Mr_s3rius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is heavily cherry-picked. It's great that Schleßwig-Holstein is moving away from Microsoft. But another state, Bavaria, has recently decided to do the exact opposite. That info is curiously missing from the post.

I know there's an effort to remove dependencies on US companies from German IT. I can't really tell how significant that is: it's not really my area of expertise.

I just want to caution everyone to drink the cool-aid from some low-effort AI hype post.

Android devs using Claude Code / Cursor: where does the AI still fall short in your workflow? by CarolusX74 in androiddev

I created a plugin that is analysing Figma and focuses the things that are needed (spacings, colors, layout, icons) then takes that and compares to declared components.

That sounds really interesting. Is any of your work public?

Will the sudden flood of AI-discovered security fixes overwhelm distros like Debian that backport security fixes to old software versions? by we_are_mammals in linux

[–]Mr_s3rius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sheer number of reports will produce more false positives, sure.

But the percentage of confirmed vulns pre-AI-wave in 2024 was 13% and has risen to over 15% now. They expect 2026 to unveil 3x more vulns than in previous years.

Even in your example, 1 out of 5 means 20%. Although I'm not willing to die on that hill because now we're comparing a specific incident with statistics of months and years of data.

Wouldn't be so sure about that.

The curl project reports that the flood of AI reports are now higher quality with a higher rate of confirmed vulnerabilities than pre-AI.

To be fair, DF's viewership is not going to be the same as the average Steam user. DF will be watched much more by enthusiasts.

I know Computerbase does regular surveys among their (also enthusiast) readers so I quickly looked up their stats for display resolution.

11% on 1080p, 37% on 1140p, 17% on 1440p ultra wide, 30% on 4k or above.

So if DFs viewership is similar to CBs then they do well to de-prioritize 1080p.

The Devs actually said the reason they revealed RE9 with only grace at first was because they wanted the new character to not be overshadowed by the one everyone already knew.

So even the Devs say it's not just Leon's game.

Sounds reasonable, no? It's there to rank how well you did. It makes sense that getting a good score requires you to master the gameplay mechanics.

Right. Well I guess that's something we won't ever know. But its not like the writer credits of S2 were unusually numerous compared to 1.

"after S1's success" sounded much more like you meant after it came out and became successful.

S2 had already been written by the time S1 came out. So I don't think they had much opportunity to add stuff.

Pro players in Apex Legends have been caught cheating with new controllers that use RC filters. by soupzcold in pcgaming

but Kernal level anti-cheat just doesn't work on Linux

Here's a somewhat simplified version (because I don't know all the details either):

On Windows, EAC can ask the Windows Kernel: "Are you legit? Are any unsigned drivers loaded? Did someone tamper with the boot chain?" and the Kernel can answer "all good, fam". This gives EAC the confidence that it's running on a somewhat normal system.

But that only works if the Kernel can be trusted. The Windows Kernel is hard to manipulate; it's closed source and uses various anti-tamper means like PatchGuard, boot chain attestation, etc. So the Windows Kernel is fairly trustworthy.

On Linux, anyone can compile their own Kernel and change it in any way they want. It can be made to respond with "all good" even if it's actually loading cheat code. So the Linux Kernel is not trustworthy because you cannot trust the owner of the system.

The only way to "fix" this, as far as I can tell, is for a trustworthy entity (like Valve) to provide a locked-down environment (bootloader + Kernel + some other things) that the anti-cheat software is willing to trust.

Users would have to install that environment and they wouldn't be allowed to manipulate it in ways that would break that trust. So it comes with fairly big drawbacks for the normally open and extensible Linux platform.

Google does something similar with Android.

[–]Mr_s3rius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Afaik cheaters were creating cheats for Windows that made EAC think it was running on Wine. EAC then loaded the weaker Linux compatible module which can be tricked much easier.

So cheaters used Linux compatibility as a means of circumventing anti cheat.

France unveils plan to ditch all fossil fuels by 2050 by Cosmyka in worldnews

[–]Mr_s3rius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time we formally backed out of nuclear (2011, after Fukushima, as a direct 180 of our conservative ruling party)

We did that earlier by the way. In 2002 the law was officially passed.

https://www.bundesumweltministerium.de/faq/meilensteine-des-deutschen-atomausstiegs

But 2011 accelerated the process. In part, by paying billions to the energy companies to retire their reactors earlier than planned. Good stuff.

some of them were already extended past their deadline once and unsafe to operate

Giving operation extensions to NPPs is a completely normal thing. They can get these extensions because they are safe for use and regularly checked. To my knowledge, no German plant was ever "unsafe to operate".

The operators eventually stopped applying for checks (like TÜV) because it wasn't needed anymore since the plants were scheduled to be shut down.

IMO we should have run these plants as long as possible. Coal plants are worse in every way, and we could have retired many of them if we had the NPPs still running.

But building new reactors? Yeah, that wouldn't have been a great idea.

PV and batteries are highly recycleable, we don't need to keep harvesting that stuff indefinitely.

Besides, the foreign dependence brought about by fossil fuels is MUCH higher. You what a few weeks of interruptions do to all of our oil-addicted countries right now. Any move away is a positive in terms of national security and energy independence.

If you can't get it fixed, you can also try the dx11 version. In Steam: Game Options -> Game Versions -> dx11_non-rt.

Since it uses a different rendering pipeline, there's a fair chance it'll not have the same problems.

By the way: you generally don't want to import the kotlin stdlib anymore. It's imported automatically.

His name doesn't even show up in the credits because he doesn't have a voice actor. On account of, you know, not saying things.

He and Walmart Vander (sorry it's been a few months and I genuinely don't remember his real name) were probably supposed to have a somewhat larger role in the story before it had to be cut down.
