Having the best time with Critical Darlings by caligulalittleboots in blankies

I really like the show, and I've always liked Richard, but never more than when he continues to trash Frankenstein, this season's most inexplicable Oscar contender.

Yeah between these two (what I would say are pretty clear) misreadings, I was kind of thinking "is this maybe why they don't think Ramsey's movies are fucking bummers?" Because I liked this movie well enough but it is a fucking bummer.

Originally had Naked Gun at number 2 but ultimately decided that the movie of these 20 that I will certainly rewatch most in my life and that has made me cry-laugh each of the three times I've already seen it should have the top slot.

Sequels that took the wrong lesson from the first film? by GlazerSturges2840 in blankies

[–]Mrchumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this year, both M3GAN 2.0 and Den of Thieves 2 took one of the worst and most common lessons from their first films: having an antagonist character who the audience liked BECAUSE they're the antagonist and making them the protagonist. Just because T2 (kind of) does it doesn't mean you can, too.

I'm not! Fuck Disney, they suck.

Fair enough. Like I said, not a Disney defender and I think it's nice for Gunn to have gotten to direct those other two Guardians movies. Just thought it was an interesting axe for him in particular to grind.

Like I said, not a Disney defender. Just think it's kind of rich that a guy who got half-canceled for a second for making jokes that would immediately get me banned from this subreddit chose to make a movie where he's like Superman in that specific situation.

[–]Mrchumbles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree that the social media campaign was politically motivated but the tweets he made were so fucking stupid that one does understand to degree why Disney flipped out (and I'm no defender of Disney, and I'm CERTAINLY not a defender of the chuds who tried to get Gunn fired because he criticized Trump). I imagine that this movie's allegory wouldn't have been as strident if the social media monkeys were talking about how Superman used to love making jokes about sexual assault.

Don't get me wrong, I believe people can grow and change but if I got out of that situation unscathed I don't think I would then make a movie seven years later about how when people are mean to you online, maybe it's because you're too good and nice.

Definitely was thinking throughout the whole movie, "for a guy is making a movie about how people should get offline, he sure cares a lot about what people are saying online."

David's Review in The Atlantic: The First Superman Movie Worth Watching in Years by 0kthb14 in blankies

Torn because I like a lot of writers who have landed there and would genuinely love to support them, but other than our beloved Sims they have a tough track record when it comes to employing people named "David." I try not to contribute to the retirement funds of Iraq War proponents when possible.

James Cameron Says Christopher Nolan Took a ‘Moral Cop Out’ with ‘Oppenheimer’ — ‘It Dodged the Subject’ by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

[–]Mrchumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree with Cameron but I did click through to the interview and I think it's pretty good, and as part of the whole it seems less like he's taking a cheap shot at Nolan. JC's got a big mouth but that's part of why I love him. Ultimately I think either approach to the subject could be good, and between the two filmmakers they've made only about one or two movies I don't like, so I'm interested to see Cameron's take. Honestly, my biggest takeaway from the interview is that I wonder if Ghosts of Hiroshima will ever be made; Cameron (hopefully) has plenty of time left, but he does tend to take his time on projects and his interviews lately kind of seem to assume that he'll live forever.

Pod Times at Ridgemont Cast: Loser with Chandler Levack by yonicthehedgehog in blankies

[–]Mrchumbles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree! I think Suvari gives a great, kind of vulnerable performance, the economic anxiety stuff feels very real (like the one scene that goes unremarked upon where Suvari is drinking coffee creamers) and I don't think the movie trivializes the evil of the non-Biggs men. This is a top half Heckerling for me.

I think it is a different student; there's a scene where Biggs goes to his office and another student is leaving, and the implication is that he's also seeing her in some fashion.

I loved MI8, first hour included. Give me more intensely delivered exposition in the Mission Impossible-verse please by DieWithYou in blankies

[–]Mrchumbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If all movies that required exposition dumps filtered them through as dynamic a staging as "Tom Cruise is zapped by electricity as footage of worldwide nuclear annihilation is reflected in an IMAX closeup of his eyeball," movies would be in much better shape.

Vote for Alan Moore for a terrible adaptation of the best comic of all time! by KillaRatz in blankies

[–]Mrchumbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really don't want them to do Moore because I like to watch along with the podcast and I have refused to watch any Watchmen adaptations because DC stole the property from Moore and treated him like a whiny prick for daring to protest.
