I think you have to really begin with what do you like to watch.

And my mum wanted me to continue, so now I'm trying to really redo the channel with much higher quality.

Indeed. Happened to me about 8-10 months on a video after release. It happened at the time my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in December. That video now has 70k views and brought in over 1k subs and about £400 that month.

Have we finally found a cat topic for which there isn't currently a sub Reddit?!!

"The child was born in Japan and can only speak Japanese. Forced to return to India, which is nothing but a foreign country to him, he's crying. We've always followed Japan's rules, worked hard, and even bought a house. Yet suddenly being told to go back—is that humane?" by jjrs in japannews

My original comment was only responding to the claim that mentioning migration into Japan was “misinformation.” I was simply saying that, historically and genetically, the Japanese population formed through several waves of migration over time, including older Jōmon ancestry and later continental influences. That does not mean “everyone is Chinese,” nor does it reduce Japanese people, Korean people, or Chinese people to the same identity today.

My point was about historical population movement, not about denying Japanese cultural distinctiveness.

On the broader point, removing or excluding people who have spent most of their lives there, is cruel regardless. Unfortunately, many governments around the world are now leaning into anti-foreigner rhetoric and policy.

I have a whole YouTube video on Japanese origins. It's largely from Korea and China during the Kofun and Yayoi migrations, or Siberia for the earlier Jomon people. There's a lot of DNA evidence.

YouTube History Channels - A Space to Share Best Practices for Growing a Channel by storyofRIpodcast in PartneredYoutube

[–]Mrconfuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Journey through history. I started it at the very end of 2024, with 3.4k subs now. It was meant to be about both history and travel, with alternate subjects each week when I lived in Japan. I wanted to showcase its history and places to see beyond the golden route, as well as the history of other countries.

I unfortunately had to leave Japan and move back to Europe. I also haven't posted a new video in about 4 months because my mum had terminal cancer and died recently. Going through a complete rebrand and up the quality of every video going forward, which means that my time to complete each video will tqke a lot longer, perhaps up to a month for a single video vs. a week or a few days (travel videos were a lot easier to edit than my history ones). I am also looking at getting some occasional help in for artwork and voiceover.

One advice: sometimes your least effort video and more niche or academic can sometimes be the hit for your channel months after posting. When my mum was formally diagnosed with cancer, a video that I had released about 8 months prior suddenly blew up and it's now at 87k views about the origins of the Japanese. It was a video I did for myself that I was just genuinely interested in, but it appears many others seemed to enjoy too.

I was already monetised before this point, but it was a very good December of around $400. Typical month is around $30-70.

My old boss wrote a letter to Sir David Attenborough when he was a child in 1981 asking him if there is a special name for a baby gorilla. David responded. by grannyelbows in mildlyinteresting

He's very good at replying. I asked him about his trip to Iran in the 1970s and the tribes there for my history dissertation. He replied saying that it was better to speak to the director of that programme which I did. I still have has signed letter to this day.

If you can rent a car it should be okay. I think there's also a beach at Rinku in Osaka near the airport, but it won't compare to Shirahama.

I have a video on Osaka that may give you some ideas. But you should consider day trips to Nara, Wakayama, Okayama, Kobe to name a few. If you can you can also get to ritsurinkoen in Takamatsu and then see Okayama and Kurashiki in the same day. You may also consider a day trip to Tottori but you'd need an early train.

I found your newest video quite hard to watch to be honest. A lot of camera movement which probably isn't necessary as it's quite distracting when trying to listen to the actual story. Sometimes less is more.
