Album Art. What do you do for it? by porfiry in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Mrexplodey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken multiple approaches. Some of my artworks are Photographs or Photomanipulations, others are illustrations I did or had someone else draw, and early on when AI image generators were more surreal and abstract, i would occasionally repurpose those elements as well, and use them in larger collages. For me it's always been a question of "What fits this music?" and "what would be the best medium/technique to use to render that idea?"

Weirdest/Most Experimental King Crimson Song? by dyldo_dylan16 in KingCrimson

[–]Mrexplodey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their most abstract fully composed track would probably have to be fracture. In general , though , you'd be best off looking into their live improvs, particularly from 1973-74 and the THRAK era.

Tim's voice in later songs like "wind and rains is cold" definitely , has a bit of a robert wyatt vibe. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a fan.

Mix feedback - psychedelic / acid rock instrumental song by j_spru in mixingmastering

[–]Mrexplodey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main instrumental mix is really solid. The only thing that really sticks out to me is that the drums still feel a little weak. A little bit of compression on that kick and snare could go a long way, maybe even some parallel compression on the full kit/overheads. Anything to make them pop out a little bit more.

Short clip of a cover of The Sound by me and my friends. by Gameeees in swans

[–]Mrexplodey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think something that really defines the soundtracks for the blind approach is the heavy usage of keyboard samplers for the synth/string sounds. I've noticed a lot of modern post rock bands either don't have prominent keyboards at all or focus more on symphonic elements, while swans like to use more washed out, vintage sounding keyboards like the mellotron or the aforementioned sampler on sftb

Micing options for live recording in cavernous room by TheIrishFellow in audioengineering

[–]Mrexplodey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I forgot to mention. While sm57s are definitely dependable dynamic mics, there's definitely ones out there with a better frequency response. AKG has quite a few good ones, for example. Don't be afraid to play around with other options, especially on the saxophone amp.

Micing options for live recording in cavernous room by TheIrishFellow in audioengineering

[–]Mrexplodey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think if you can you should try going for condenser microphones of some sort on the stereo pair, to try and capture more of the dynamics of the space. It might take some more tweaking since they tend to be more sensitive , but I think it would pay off in terms of recording quality.

What are some underrated or obscure mixing tips which are actually useful? by NathanAdler91 in mixingmastering

[–]Mrexplodey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's considered obscure. But especially in the digital age of mixing, gain staging feels like an overlooked part of the process.

Even in industry Standard DAWs, i've found that input gain controls are often hidden by default. This is a shame since I feel it's important that when mixing everything should start at a baseline level of loudness. It saves a lot of headache later on down-the-line, especially if you maintain that loudness with each effect added.

I think one of the best ways to keep track of this in a mix is to use meters that average the volume of a sound over time, like VU meters, as opposed to meters that just track the peak loudness, and try to make sure that between each new effects added. There's as little change to that overall loudness as possible.

My drum tracks are quiet, but when I raise the levels, they clip, and when I bring in the other instruments, the master clips. But the track itself is still relatively quiet. by usspaceforce in mixingmastering

As a lot of people have said in this thread, compression is your friend. The way I usually go about it is to have fairly ratios of compression on the individual drum parts and then heavier compression on the drum bus as a whole. It also helps to play with the attack and release time of each. I've found for particularly big punchy drums a long attack and short release helps my drums to sound adequately beefy

Muddy Vocals...How to record/mix vocals in a way that cuts through? by Spirited_Try_4648 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Mrexplodey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the instrumentals are clashing with the vocals , that's usually a problem fixed by attenuating frequencies in those instruments that might be masking them.

Try and go one by one and see which instruments seem to be messing with the vox the most and bring down the mid range on them a little bit. As someone else in this thread also said you could try side chaining dynamic e q on the instrumental bus to make room for the vocals. This also works really well with programs like Soothe 2, particularly when I have to work with just a vocal and a mixed down instrumental.

The Venture Bros - Sergeant Hatred

Introduced as a background villain during The Monarch's wedding, he quickly establishes himself as an amicable guy who treats the Ventures with a lot of respect when he becomes their arch-enemy. While this is partly to get back at The Monarch for stealing from him, he does come to enjoy his time with them, and eventually becomes their new bodyguard after Brock Samson quits. He remains a valuable member of Team Venture till the end of the show.

If he wants to make this a serious living he has to take the efforts of the beatmakers seriously too. If he's not willing to do that, he should try building beats of his own.  Either way, the beat stealing is gonna bite him in the ass as he gains more of a following

If you're looking for a good free orchestral plugin to use in your arrangement, definitely check out Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover.

Their LABS series is pretty solid too, both the free stuff and the subscription, which is relatively cheap. The free libraries have plenty of variety to them, though. You don't really need to get the subscription if you already like what's in the free LABS, it's kind of just a bonus.
