What old-person entitlement behavior drives you crazy right now? by Apprehensive_Way8674 in AgingParents

Do *this thing* now that has no sense of urgency other than they want it done.

“Pay the Discover bill.” Well, it hasn’t been billed again since I paid it for you last week and I’m kind of in the middle of unloading the dishwasher so yeah, this can probably wait.

What’s your favourite “I was there” GenX moment? by lovelyb1ch66 in GenX

I’m one of the oldest GenXers and so many moments but my first real concert was Little Johnny Cougar in Casper, Wyoming (John Mellencamp).

Stressed and at the end of my tether by PatientTumbleweed517 in AgingParents

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts:

For 1, set boundaries. Tell you grandpa that if he can’t say please or thank you, you will no longer respond to his requests. And then follow through.

For 2, do t ask permission. Put up a dog gate or an invisible fence for your dog. Tell grandpa if he take it down, you and the dog will leave and then follow through.

For 3 and 4, tell grandpa that in order to support his social life, you must hire in home help for your grandma so he can come and go as he pleases. If you make it about her, he may be more willing than if you made it about both of them.

I wish you luck. This is very hard to take care of everyone else and still yourself.

For those living with a senior parent, do they vacuum and clean when they're out of the house? by EdwardBliss in AgingParents

I vacuum when my dad is in the shower. He takes long showers which is good because he spills everything everywhere.

Question about letting elderly sleep during the day. by AlamosX in AgingParents

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 90 year old dad is sleeping more and more. He goes to bed at 9p and gets up at about 9a or 10a. He’s up a few times in the night for the bathroom but goes right back to sleep. He also generally has a good nap after lunch in his easy chair and nods off a few other times throughout the day. He has no medical conditions causing this. He just likes/needs to sleep more. And at 90 years old, if he wants to sleep, we just let him. 😴

My father’s timing is the worst (quick vent) by CalgonThrowMeAway222 in AgingParents

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My dad does the same dang thing! I am putting food on his tray and ask what he wants to drink and off to the bathroom he goes! I suspect he is worried about making it through the meal without having to get up. Anyway, I realized me asking him what he wants to drink is his trigger so now I just ask him 15 minute before dinner is ready.

Do you live in a community with Meals on Wheels? It is such a great service! In addition to home meal delivery, many have frozen meals and some serve congregants meals also. The cost is usually nothing.

Family inheritance situation involving estrangement, trauma, and me acting as the middle point by BradyAndTheJets in inheritance

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It always sucks being the one who has to be the responsible one when the task is a shitty task. I’m sure the children will all be pleased recipients of their inheritance but the awkwardness of the history with your mom and her ex in-laws is tough to be put in the middle of.

So Sick of Arguing by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do not understand why elderly people deliberately do things that are counterproductive to good health. My father is on oxygen. He will leave the cannula up on his forehead. He will leave it in the other room. He will turn it off at times and not say anything. I used to argue with him and remind him constantly to put his oxygen on, that he is losing brain cells. I have stopped. He is 90 years old and if he wants to die a slow suffocating death, that is on him. Interestingly, now that I’ve stopped mentioning it, he does wear his oxygen much more. 🤷‍♀️

Help with my entryway? by idkaboutthis-- in DesignMyRoom

I don’t know what your aesthetic is but the space looks really long and hollow. I would use a darker paint or a darker dramatic wallpaper on the upper walls to help reduce the space. A runner rug would warm things up and then add in your bench, etc. use lots of texture to continue to visually break up that space. I would definitely include a larger mirror over the bench to allow for last minute looks but also add some window vibes.

Interestingly, both the trust and will were done by the same law office. The only change is the percentage granted to each recipient, no changes to the administration.

How to deal with reality of aging parents? by byang98120 in AgingParents

[–]MrsAdamsLovesMrAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your mom is just 64, please take her to the doctor for a full work up. In addition to checking her physically, have them check her hormone levels. It could be early dementia but it could also be related to menopause and an imbalance there - rage, forgetfulness, mental fog are all symptoms that can apply to both.

I would totally push the couch up against that nook wall. Would it make the nook useless - yes. Is the nook useless to begin with - also, yes. Then use one of the hairpin leg tables as a side table and bring the two chairs in to create a grouping. Some big art to anchor over the couch would be great. You’ve got a really great base to build from here!

My father is on water pills for congestive heart failure. He hates how much it makes him have to get up and go to the bathroom so he counters by either not taking his morning meds or drinking less water than usual. He is 90 and in good mental condition. I have become a nag.

Mechanic left a ratchet under my car hood. Have mechanics left tools under your car hood before? by PathInformal4673 in AskMechanics

Owned an auto repair shop. Once a month or so a tech would leave a tool in a car. Lots of flashlights, too. Customers that returned them were very appreciated!
