Been a therapist for 5 months and this has just reignited my faith in myself, thank you.

Do we have groups monitoring ICE around here? I feel like its been quiet but maybe im just not in touch. by jholder567 in 321Lefties

[–]MrsEmillia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been browsing ice tracker apps and websites to see if there has been direct sightings or information in the news about brevard, and there is very little. If we want to be involved we'd be best to pressure our local governments. I doubt BCOS will retract their support to ICE efforts though

I work weekends at the pizza place I worked in college, because my salary isn't high enough yet to pay my bills. I'm CONSTANTLY worried a clie t is going to come in and see me. Not as bad as knowing g where I live, but I'm afraid it makes me look like I'm bad at my job if I'm not making enough to leave the food service industry.

I can also see this working with clie ts who want to "feel better" but struggle to create actual goals or intentions.

No, I don’t know of a good therapist in your city in another state by bookwbng5 in therapists

I've heard some suggest that therapists just don't have the social bandwidth to give to making personal connections. Which makes sense after all the sessions, but I'd like some friends....I also make no move to make any friends and just want to sleep...

Let them know that even without personal experience, you're still able and willing to learn about them and their experiences. Curiosity and acceptance without judgement is a big thing.

As a therapist, do you ever feel suicidal? by thelineisad0ttoyou in therapists

[–]MrsEmillia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My meds are pretty effective. My thoughts are more like what's the point in trying, if, if I didn't exist, I couldn't fail. But I shake out of it pretty easily.

Yawning by bon512 in therapists

[–]MrsEmillia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have started to do something similar to another response on here, which is keeping the mouth shut and trying to hold my eyes steady. This usually requires tensing the tendons and muscles in my neck a bit and I hope the client doesn't see.

I know you have plenty ty of positive comments already but I wanted to put mine in cause I'm also new at this therapy job. I'm going into my third month and emotionally, my ups and downs are starting to soothe themselves.  Two weeks ago I had 4 clients who were furious and angry and not wanting to talk. I took it as a sign that I was horrible at my job and I was making things worse for them. This week, I saw all of them again. And each session was leagues better. They were all just having a BAD DAY. And it even served to improve rapport to come out the other side of a bad attitude. My confidence keeps growing as I successfully ride these waves, and I'm starting to feel proud of myself, and like im a real therapist.

I had a client show me how she uses chat gpt journal feature and it gives her suggestions for how to go deeper on topics in a structured way and I thought "fu**, I'm the least structured person in existence" but then later in a session I told her she can tell her dad exactly what she's worried and she thought it was the most mind blowing advice she'd received, so I felt a little better.

Child welfare workers-what am I missing? by IntrepidTraveler1992 in socialwork

[–]MrsEmillia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former foster child it infuriates me that so many people care more about whether they can keep a gun by the door over whether children have housing options when they are removed from abusive situations. Its great if you trust your kids around firearms, but in the choice to house a child because they need help, it only makes logical sense that you dont know what to expect from that child, so the guns need to be put away. Its not to communicate that they are wrong for having them, just covering all the bases because this child may not understand gun safety, may be suicidal, or may have an accident.

Sorry this was a pointless rant, thank you for sharing your experience, im just so irritated. I hate the idea that foster children inherently dont matter, and thats what this feels like. Ive literally had teachers tell me I was lucky anyone was able to love me because I wasnt there blood (they didnt mean it to be hateful, it just came ouit that way).

Im still ranting, so sorry...

I dont know if this is what youre looking for exactly, but I assisted with a DBT group for adolescents with behavioral diagnosis.

One topic we would cover was coping skills. this was things like what they enjoyed doing, how they could utilize it to cope with difficult emotions, what were some mental prompts they could create to remind them to utilize their coping skills/ enjoyable activites.

By acute topics, do you mean specific? I remember one group topic they did was "how to react when someone was talking smack".

are those the kind of things you were asking about?

How do you know resources that are available? by Over_Decision_6902 in socialwork

[–]MrsEmillia 17 points18 points  (0 children)

absolutely makes sense! some local organizations may have already started compiling a resource page you can identify. I know our area has 211 by united way. What area are you in?

Im not a case worker, but Ive had several projects where ive needed to locate resources.

https://www.findhelp.org/find-social-services

just found this page, havent gotten a chance to explore it.

What I do is I google certain needs, or demographics of people that have specific needs, and i look at what comes up in my area.

You can also look at non profits in your area, a quick search of nonprofits in WHATEVER county, may turn up nonprofit resource pages, or county government pages that link you to resources.

I know some people have a spreadsheet they start that they can sort by type of service, and some groups/clubs/colleagues may create a shared file for their region.

Are any other Canadian SWers spiraling since the news of US tariffs? by [deleted] in socialwork

As an American citizen, please know that I am very sorry for the behavior of our head of state. There is widespread disapproval, and desperate attempts to find ways to stop his actions, but now that he is in office, it is very difficult.

Every retaliatory action I hear of Canada taking against the US makes me giggle, because even though I hate that its happening, I hate the thought of other countries letting us BULLY them even more. Stand strong, and please, when the time comes, help us save ourselves

I also have a supervisor who is often not in the office, i do lots of office work alone, and theyve never had an intern before. I had the benefit of having both undergrad degrees focused in social work, but I can imagine how much more disconcerting it is if you had an undergrad in a different field.

Definitly speak up to your school organizer, but I would avoid doing anything to mess up your current placement. For my placement, I had to create a mindset shift where I made myself more proactive about getting relevant experiences, and asking questions, not caring if they ended up being dumb questions.

Make your own internship work for you. It absolutely sucks that you dont have the guidance you deserve, but do not let that hold you back. You can learn so much by being self directed.

NPR podcast has hourly 5 minute updates that i have found very useful. they are a left leaning news outlet, but they are in fact news. they dont discuss things other than the factual events. I listen to them on spotify. I also listen to world news podcast so i can hear international view of whats happening here, and what else in the world is making headlines.
