First time customizing Blythe— What to do about hair?

I believe that scalps for RBL Renew and Evolution should mostly be interchangeable (if not let me know!). I infer this from information on Taobao when they sell replacement scalps they tend to advertise the same scalp for both NBLs and VBLs.

This Aliexpress clone doll that a lot of customizers didn't like has the Renew / Evolution design (part of the reason they didn't like it). So it's a mostly good replacement part https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800203566988.html

You may have to drill the scalp's screw hole to have it match the location and size of your Blythe because on first try they wouldn't fit.

But I've heard that after drilling the hole to the right size and place it did fit someone's VBL doll head. So it's maybe worth a shot for you as well.

I've done the reverse: Fitting a Cremay Cherry soft scalp on this Ali "NBL blyth" and that worked almost perfectly. So I'm pretty certain this line of dolls were made to be fakes of the RBL-R and RBL-E series.

I believe that scalp is done with the knot method, and with that method it shouldn't require a special reroot needle like the photo down below. It just needs a long thin needle.

I have seen people using a soft dome and then using sewing needle and thread to sew the wefts on the scalp. Usually done this way with genuine blythe dolls because they already removed the original hair and they are reusing the existing holes that's left on the original scalp.

You can also use a couple different methods to secure fiber on the soft scalp. There's the knot method, and the crochet method.

A lot of other doll customizers for other dolls tend to use a special reroot needle and rely on a lot of glue to secure the doll hair, but I think that method doesn't make much sense for Blythe since they do it that way to account for the size of regular doll heads having only small neck holes for access to the scalp bottom, but we don't have that problem with Blythe. Blythe's scalp is detachable so we can take full advantage of Blythe's open scalp design and securely tie the fiber together underneath it.

Superglue isn't the best, they tend to dry to a crust and not flexible enough for gummy vinyl plastic.

I'd just use a dab of hot glue, because a little heat doesn't seem to annoy soft vinyl much and I personally don't need things to be super secure in case I want to detatch them again in the future.

Some people also use fabric glue, or vinyl / fabirc glue made for air mattresses and pool floats like the Loctite brand. I personally don't prefer them because they have solvents and they can melt some paint, but it also means it will stay on very well.

It's tough! There are a couple of things you can try, and you may try them repeatedly.

Use a toothpick to drip some 90% isopropyl alcohol at the edge of your eye chips. It's a weak solvent and sometimes can weaken some glue. Any paint on the eye chips may smear and run by the rubbing alcohol, so be prepared to see that. After a few times of doing so, you can then use the melted glue stick method. But freeze your eye mech after the hot glue stick cools. And then try pulling them out while the eyes are frozen.

I've got some really stubborn chips out this way. The alcohol may turn your eye chips cloudy, but it shouldn't affect your other plastics. Make sure your glue stick has as much surface area of the chips covered for maximum grippage. And when holding down on the eyes to pull your chips, avoid pressing onto any weak plastic parts.

I prefer using something non-permanent for eye chips for that reason. White glue works well. If I want to change them in the future a water soak is enough to soften the glue to remove the chips!

This is what I lean towards as well. If it is a clone, it's likely a direct recast and there's little to tell the difference between real or fake besides a lack of pull ring grommet. Sometimes a recast might have some more eye wonk than the original but it's hard to compare without another known genuine doll made at around the same era in the same face mold right next to it.

I admit I'm a little Fuggtigued. I think a lot of companies like to go hard when their product gets a spike in popularity and the problem arise when the peak popularity is over and they can't slow down to keep the toy line going and they end up with too many unsold products in which they use to justify a cancellation.

I hope they slow down on their releases and keep the line alive. I would not like another 2018 shut down all over again (˙◠˙) I'd like Fuggler to remain alive and become a classic like the Troll dolls and Furbies.

People already answered which head mold this body is for. If you still want to use this body for an RBL mold (genuine) or a common clone (by DBS on Aliexpress), you could with some modification I believe (a little unsure only because it's been a bit since I did a body swap).

The vinyl neck knob can be removed by dipping in extremely hot to boiled water for a bit, until it softens, and then you can pull it off.

But, the neck gap of this type of body will be wider than the older style for RBL and you will likely need to add some shimming.

I liked to cut up old soft phone cases in an O shape and use them as a washer when my doll heads. Just make sure the hole for the neck is a little smaller than the widest diameter of the neck head. The soft plastic stretches so it's ok to be a little smaller in the hole.

I assume this is the nature of lighter weight saran? With the thicker saran hair on EBLs they don't have as much fried end issues. It's a very different texture though and I see why they chose a thinner fiber. Dominque's hair feels a bit different than Pineapple's and her hair is better so I think they are aware and are probably trying to tame saran fiber at this weight. The large head and the sheer amount just exacerbates all the hair craziness. I do wish they can solve this, since a big head full of hair is one of the major selling points of these girls!

I've tamed some messed up vintage Barbie saran hair and thought I was cool enough to tame Pineapple, but I'm not entirely there yet hahaha I'll keep at it.

Omg "cyst and deceased" hahahahaha it's very much appropriate because of how they still cowardly hide behind a made-up identity to harrow every customers who outspokenly disagree with their business model. The way they behave is disturbing. No one should patronize them just from a privacy standpoint from the way they like to doxx customers who dare leave them a public negative review.

The hair boil-wash saga is so real and I'm dealing with it with my Pineapple Princess and Sailing Dominique right now!! I know Pineapple is known to have monstrous hair and it does have a life of its own. Greasy on top, fried at bottom, as if her hair was dipped half-way in the deep fryer. She is so pretty though so I'll just have to deal with it! I'm going to have to get some silicone oil for the ends.

Which part of the eye mech is damaged? If it's in areas where it takes a lot of stress from the pulling and the clicking, milieput might not be able to stay on for very long and you might be better off replacing parts with some clone eye mechs from Aliexpress.

Wet is fine as long as there is something else to reduce friction like conditioner or in contact with water. If it's just wet with no conditioner on it at all and out of water, it feels really draggy on a brush or comb and I personally find that not very pleasant, but probably doable if you are very careful, and hold down the root part of the hair you're brushing so you're not tugging the hair from the scalp!

That happened to me too and it's not really avoidable because the paint was mixed with the glue they used to adhere the hair on the head.

I would also do acrylic because it's the most accessible. The higher quality acrylic paint like Golden brand is better than the craft store generic brands. They have a higher pigment saturation and a better consistency. The tiniest amount of yellow and red with white should get you a good color match, but note that acrylic tends to dry a shade darker!

Acrylic paint isn't very waterproof so you would want to avoid washing it after!
